Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 1999 26/1-2 Jichihan and the Restoration and Innovation of Buddhist Practice Marc Buijnsters The various developments in doctrinal thought and practice during the Insei and Kamakura periods remain one of the most intensively researched fields in the study of Japanese Buddhism. Two of these developments con cern the attempts to restore the observance of traditional Buddhist ethics, and the problem of how Pure La n d tenets could be inserted into the esoteric teaching. A pivotal role in both developments has been attributed to the late-Heian monk Jichihan, who was lauded by the renowned Kegon scholar- monk Gydnen as “the restorer of the traditional precepts ” and patriarch of Japanese Pure La n d Buddhism.,’ At first glance, available sources such as Jichihan’s biograpmes hardly seem to justify these praises. Several newly discovered texts and a more extensive use of various historical sources, however, should make it possible to provide us with a much more accurate and complete picture of Jichihan’s contribution to the restoration and innovation of Buddhist practice. At tms ceremony the priest Jichi han officiated as Teacher of the Precepts (kaishi 戒自帀;Kofukuji ryaku 興福寺略年代記,Hoen 6/10/2). Fujiwara no Yorinaga 藤原頼長 (1120-11^)0), Tadazane^ son who was to be remembered as “Ih e Wicked Minister of the Left” for his role in the Hogen Insurrection (115bハ occasionally mentions in his diary that he had the same Jichi han perform esoteric rituals in order to recover from a chronic ill ness, achieve longevity,and extinguish his sins (Taiki 台gd Koji 1/8/6, 2/2/22; Ten,y6 1/6/10). -

Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 1996 2 3/3-4 The Discourse on the “Land of Kami” (Shinkoku) in Medieval Japan National Consciousness and International Awareness Kuroda Toshio Translated by Fabio Rambelli This essay examines the concept of “shinkoku” (land of the kami) as it evolved in medieval Japan, and the part this concept played in the devel opment of a state ideology. A close look at medieval documents reveals that medieval Shinto doctrines arose in Japan as part of the exoteric-esoteric sys tem (kenmitsu taisei),the dominant politico-religious ethos of the times, and was heavily influenced by the Buddhist teaching of original enlight enment (hongaku shiso). In this sense it was a construct of Buddhism, and a reactionary phenomenon arising out of the decadence of the earlier system of government rule. The exo-esoteric system (kenmitsu taisei 顕密体制)was,as I have dis cussed in other writings, inseparably related to the medieval Japanese state. How, then, did kenmitsu thought influence the contemporane ous awareness oi the Japanese state and of the world outside Japan? I would like to investigate this question in the present essay through an analysis of the medieval discourse on the “land of the kami” (shinkoku ネ申国). Earlier studies on the shinkoku concept have tended to consider it in isolation rather than in the context of the various historical factors with which it was inseparably linked,factors such as exo-esotericism (kenmitsu shugi II 始、王義 ,the womb or essence of shinkoku thought) and the contemporaneous Japanese attitude toward the world out- This article is a translation of the fourth section, ^Chusei no shinkoku shiso: Kokka ishi- ki to kokusai kankaku,” of Kuroda Toshio’s essay <£Chusei ni okeru kenmitsu taisei no tenkai” (Kuroda 1994). -

Art of Zen Buddhism Zen Buddhism, which stresses a connection to the spiritual rather than the physical, was very influential in the art of Kamakura Japan. Zen Calligraphy of the Kamakura Period Calligraphy by Musō Soseki (1275–1351, Japanese zen master, poet, and calligrapher. The characters "別無工夫 " ("no spiritual meaning") are written in a flowing, connected soshō style. A deepening pessimism resulting from the civil wars of 12th century Japan increased the appeal of the search for salvation. As a result Buddhism, including its Zen school, grew in popularity. Zen was not introduced as a separate school of Buddhism in Japan until the 12th century. The Kamakura period is widely regarded as a renaissance era in Japanese sculpture, spearheaded by the sculptors of the Buddhist Kei school. The Kamakura period witnessed the production of e- maki or painted hand scrolls, usually encompassing religious, historical, or illustrated novels, accomplished in the style of the earlier Heian period. Japanese calligraphy was influenced by, and influenced, Zen thought. Ji Branch of Pure Land Buddhism stressing the importance of reciting the name of Amida, nembutsu (念仏). Rinzai A school of Zen buddhism in Japan, based on sudden enlightenment though koans and for that reason also known as the "sudden school". Nichiren Sect Based on the Lotus Sutra, which teaches that all people have an innate Buddha nature and are therefore inherently capable of attaining enlightenment in their current form and present lifetime. That is because Shugendo was a religion of practice rather than of theory, and one of mysteries as well-a religion of miracles and of faith. Practice (shu @ ) and miracles (gen @ ) require no theory, nor can mysteries or faith be recorded in written documents. Shugendo acquired theory and doctrine only after it had ceased to require dangerous, life-risk- ing practices and had lost the spiritual power to work miracles. All religions have to do with a return to the source. People believe that a religion's power was fully potent in the time of its founder, and so the ideal and goal of a religion is to return to its founder. The documents and lore passed on by the founder's disciples con- cern, for the most part, the founder's words and deeds. Doctrine is simply a theoretical re-ordering of such material. Shugendo, however, had no founder in the usual sense, and it needed no body of doc- trine. En no Gy6ja @@$$ came to be considered the founder only after the process of formation of doctrine, and the establishment of settled religious groups, had set in. The miracle-filled life of "En no Ubasoku" in Nihon vdiki (kan 1, no. 28) simply records the legend of one particularly powerful ascetic. Creating Heresy: (Mis)representation, Fabrication, and the Tachikawa-ryū Takuya Hino Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Takuya Hino All rights reserved ABSTRACT Creating Heresy: (Mis)representation, Fabrication, and the Tachikawa-ryū Takuya Hino In this dissertation I provide a detailed analysis of the role played by the Tachikawa-ryū in the development of Japanese esoteric Buddhist doctrine during the medieval period (900-1200). In doing so, I seek to challenge currently held, inaccurate views of the role played by this tradition in the history of Japanese esoteric Buddhism and Japanese religion more generally. The Tachikawa-ryū, which has yet to receive sustained attention in English-language scholarship, began in the twelfth century and later came to be denounced as heretical by mainstream Buddhist institutions. The project will be divided into four sections: three of these will each focus on a different chronological stage in the development of the Tachikawa-ryū, while the introduction will address the portrayal of this tradition in twentieth-century scholarship.
