Last but not least, I thank the patient staff members at Tenri Central Library, Tenri Bunko in Nu'uanu, and of Hawaii Dendocho for allowing me to raid their respective collections on more than one occasion. v -Abstract- The Japanese 'new religion' Tenrikyo, founded by Nakayama Miki (1798­ 1887) in the late Tokugawa era, is arguably the largest of the thirteen Kyoha Shinto ('Sect Shinto') groups that trace their institutional origins to the Meiji period. Under the joint leadership of Iburi Izo (1833-1907) and Miki's grandson Nakayama Shinnosuke (1866-1914), Tenrikyo grew from a sparse collection of ko (religious confraternities) into a vast institutional network of branch churches within ten years of Miki's death due to the aggressive propagation efforts of its first generation missionaries. This thesis surveys the historical, sociological and ideological contexts that surrounded the emergence of three schisms-Tenrin-O­ Kyokai, Daidokyo, and Honmichi-which occurred at three separate stages within Tenrikyo's transition from a small rural movement into a nationwide phenomenon. A Roman numeral will respectively indicate the Mikagura-uta song and part of the Ofudesaki; the Arabic numeral indicates the verse number of each. For the Osashizu, I will introduce a new citation style in hopes it will lessen the difficulty of exploring the original documents: the first Arabic numeral will indicate the volume, followed by Arabic page number (as opposed to the Chinese character pa'ge numbers). It will then be followed by the Meiji year of the passage; Western calendar year in brackets; followed lastly by month and date. As an example, the first passage of the Osashizu would be cited as: (as 1:1, Meiji 20 [1887] January 4). x - Introduction - The Japanese 'new religion' Tenrikyo ~lI?Jt, founded by Nakayama Miki !=PL1J';;'~ (1798-1887), the wife of a relatively wealthy landowning farmer in the Bakumatsu or late Tokugawa era (1600-1867), is arguably one of the more 'successful' of the thirteen Kyoha Shinto ?Jt~~*,ii groups that trace their institutional origins to the Meiji period (1868-1912).1 While it appears unlikely at the moment for Tenrikyo to eventually measure to the standard of 'success' established by sociologist Rodney Stark2 considering that its growth has long leveled off, the case can be made that Tenrikyo has surpassed the other Kyoha Shinto organizations in both its membership size and the extent of its influence. An acknowledged scholar of Japanese religions has noted, "Tenrikyo was a pioneer New Religion, the first to succeed on a large scale, and served as a model for later movements" (Earhart 1982, 172). An inevitable result of Tenrikyo's 'success' was the emergence of a number of schismatic movements it helped initiate. This work will survey the social and ideological contexts that surrounded the emergence of three schisms-Tenrin-O-Kyokai .~• .3:.?Jt~, Daidokyo *ii?Jt/ 1 'New religions' (shin shakyo) will be regarded as "religions that have developed in Japan from the latter Tokugawa era onward outside the mainstream of Shinto and Buddhism, though they incorporate elements from these and other traditions" (Reader and Tanabe 1998263, n. 1). I shall also use 'new religious movement(s)' interchangeably with 'new religion(s)' throughout the work. In addition to Tenrikyo, the remaining Kyoha Shinto organizations are: Kurozumikyo ~i:Ut, Konkokyo ~ft¥t, Shinto Honkyoku ~iA*Jiij (now known as Shinto Taikyo ~ii*¥t), Shinto Shiisei-ha :MIiiffRlt~*, Taishakyo **.t¥t

    Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 1999 26/1-2 Jichihan and the Restoration and Innovation of Buddhist Practice Marc Buijnsters The various developments in doctrinal thought and practice during the Insei and Kamakura periods remain one of the most intensively researched fields in the study of Japanese Buddhism. Two of these developments con­ cern the attempts to restore the observance of traditional Buddhist ethics, and the problem of how Pure La n d tenets could be inserted into the esoteric teaching. A pivotal role in both developments has been attributed to the late-Heian monk Jichihan, who was lauded by the renowned Kegon scholar- monk Gydnen as “the restorer of the traditional precepts ” and patriarch of Japanese Pure La n d Buddhism.,’ At first glance, available sources such as Jichihan’s biograpmes hardly seem to justify these praises. Several newly discovered texts and a more extensive use of various historical sources, however, should make it possible to provide us with a much more accurate and complete picture of Jichihan’s contribution to the restoration and innovation of Buddhist practice. At tms ceremony the priest Jichi­ han officiated as Teacher of the Precepts (kaishi 戒自帀;Kofukuji ryaku 興福寺略年代記,Hoen 6/10/2). Fujiwara no Yorinaga 藤原頼長 (1120-11^)0), Tadazane^ son who was to be remembered as “Ih e Wicked Minister of the Left” for his role in the Hogen Insurrection (115bハ occasionally mentions in his diary that he had the same Jichi­ han perform esoteric rituals in order to recover from a chronic ill­ ness, achieve longevity,and extinguish his sins (Taiki 台gd Koji 1/8/6, 2/2/22; Ten,y6 1/6/10).

Photograph by the author. 1 The anfractuous road from Shūzen-ji to the Amagi Pass winds through the middle of the mountainous Izu Peninsula. It cuts across small villages, traverses deep rivers filled with fresh, running waters and traces hairpin curves that straddle exquisitely terraced rice paddies. Every turn offers a stunning vista of towering mountains and verdant slopes. These views are juxtaposed with glimpses of local daily life as village residents make their way back and forth from school, shopping or their work in the fields and forests. One of the small communities the road passes along the way is Ōdaira. From the center of this settlement, a small lane leaves the road and makes its way up westward to the edge of the mountain, where is situated the remains of an old temple, a shrine and a magnificent waterfall that cascades from on high out of the forested hillside. This eastward-facing waterfall is named Asahi Daki (“Morning-sun waterfall”), and the name of temple—or the empty space where it once stood—is Rōgen-ji (literally, “origin of the waterfall”). A sign at the entrance to the area tells the visitor that Rōgen-ji was a ko- musō temple. Komusō, the sign informs us, were a band of itinerant monks who covered their heads with deep basket hats, called tengai, and wandered the Japanese countryside playing the shakuhachi bamboo flute and begging for alms. These monks belonged to the Fuke Sect, which was loosely connected to the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism, and Rōgen-ji was an affiliate temple of Rei- hō-ji Temple in Ōme, now a municipality of Tokyo in western mountainous re- gion.

    For your cultural life in Hiroshima 酒(日本酒) Saké (nihonshu) Nihonshu literally means ‘Japanese liquor’ of any type, but it’s commonly used to refer to saké, now a familiar drink in the West. It has been produced in Japan for well over 1,500 years. Saké is really the best word to use, rather than ‘rice wine’. Although yeast fermentation is involved in saké production, it’s technically more like a brewing process. The finest water and short-grained rice are used and it has an average alcohol content of around 12 – 15%. Like wine, there is a vast variety of types, flavors and quality, but many people agree it is the best alcohol to go with Japanese cuisine. It can be served with ice, at room temperature, or warmed – which tends to speed up the alcoholic effect. Like wine, it’s used a great deal in cooking, and like local ales in beer-producing countries, there are many local types of saké (jizaké). It also features in many Shinto religious ceremonies, such as weddings. Saké is made from rice and water, and especially pure water is absolutely necessary to make good saké. Saijo is blessed with not only the ideal saké -brewing water, but also other natural conditions for saké-brewing. There are eight old saké breweries in Saijo.
