GWLAD YR ADDEWID: LITERATURA E IMAGINARIOS PAISAJÍSTICOS EN LA COLONIZACIÓN GALESA DE LA PATAGONIA Fernando Williams (HITEPAC-FAU-UNLP) Introducción La colonia Chubut, establecida en 1865 a orillas del río Chubut fue la primera colonia agrícola de la Patagonia. Su fundación marcó la continuidad en tierras australes de una política de colonización que se había iniciado casi una década atrás en la órbita de la denominada Confederación Argentina, y que ponía a la inmigración en el centro de la escena. En efecto, entendidos entonces como “agentes civilizatorios” los inmigrantes europeos fueron los destinatarios de campañas de promoción oficiales cuya principal oferta fue la propiedad de la tierra en regiones por entonces remotas. En el caso de la Colonia Chubut, esos inmigrantes eran originarios de Gales, un pequeño país ubicado al oeste de la Gran Bretaña cuyo idioma y religión lo separaba de la vecina Inglaterra. Al grupo inicial de alrededor de centena y media de galeses, siguieron en las décadas siguientes varios cientos de colonos del mismo origen que ocuparon no solamente el valle inferior del Chubut sino también un área cordillerana conocida en galés como Cwm Hyfryd.1 Si bien puede decirse que los galeses refrendaron con su asentamiento una política del estado argentino orientada a hacer valer su soberanía sobre la Patagonia, también es cierto que la empresa colonizadora estuvo animada desde un principio por ideales de refundación de la nación galesa. De allí que el título de este trabajo incluya en primer término la expresión Gwlad yr Addewid que en galés significa “tierra prometida”. El propósito es indagar aquí en las implicancias que tuvieron esas ambiciosas aspiraciones respecto del modo en que fue percibido y recreado el territorio patagónico por aquellos que, siendo partícipes de esa obra colonizadora, fueron capaces en su momento de escribir sobre esa experiencia y sobre su significación. -
