Et in Arcadia Ego Mary Beard and John Henderson Before he wrote his monument al Aeneid, Virgil produced a collection of shorter 'pastoral' poems, the Eclogues or Bucolics. These evoke a very different world from the epic adventures that led to the founding of Rome. They take us instead outside the historical world of cities, politics, and war, to a place where herdsmen sit untroubled beneath shady trees that give shelter from the midday sun, trading songs or lamenting their ill-luck in love; meanwhile, their animals rest, or take water, in the heat of the day. This idyllic setting is Virgil's 'Arcadia' – a special 'elsewhere', where the imagination can escape mundane time and tune into the original scene of singing. It is a place where minds can wander, and poets and musicians have returned there ever since, re-imagining this community where song means more than status or possessions. But at the same time Virgil pictured his idyllic world as already threatened. The city and its wars cast long shadows across the lives and songs of the herdsmen and farmers. Some, for example, face arbitrary eviction and exile; some, equally arbitrarily, are spared and even rewarded. These are decisions imposed from Rome – and far exceed the understanding of the Arcadian singers. Virgil's vision includes both the innocence of song and the encroachment of massive forces bound to destroy its delicate fragility. In the centre of the Eclogues is a poem in which two herdsmen exchange songs to mark the death of the archetypal, mythical singer, Daphnis – their inspiration. -

In Bologna in the 1580s the Carracci had organized gatherings of artists called the Accademia degli Incamminati (academy of the initiated). It was one of the several such informal groups that enabled artists to discuss problems and practice drawing in an atmosphere calmer and more studious than that of a painter’s workshop. The term ‘academy’ was more generally applied at the time to literary associations, membership of which conferred intellectual rank. -

In the Name of Glory 2006 FOREWORD By Stuart Asquith Military Writer and Historian In the Name of Glory started life as a simple system that would enable large demonstration war games to be played relatively quickly. Over a period of time these simple rules have evolved into the gaming system you see here. I first saw these rules being used to conduct a 6 mm war game at the Napoleonic Fair in London in 1998. I was impressed by the way that such a large game, played with thousands of figures, flowed with ease and the very positive reception the game received, both from war gamers and members of the public. Due to the interest shown by other war gamers, their designer David Marks decided to finance the publication of his rules. The high standard of presentation and the quality of the rules themselves impressed me. They were well laid out, easy to follow and managed to retain my interest - always a bonus. I found David's rules surprisingly easy to master and the straightforward playing system creates a good historical representation of Napoleonic warfare. The ongoing morale system, and the command and control system, together with the rule’s many subtleties surely capture the flavour, excitement and unpredictability of battle. The rules contain a good deal of very useful information and the precalculated tables, used to resolve firing and melee save time by eliminating the need to trawl through lists of factors. Over the years, I have used many sets of rules, but it has been a long time since a set of rules such as In the Name of Glory has resulted in so many enjoyable and interesting games. -

Juli 1819 wird er in seiner Gefängniszelle vom Blitz erschlagen. Damit endet ein beweg- tes Leben, das vor allem durch diesen ungewöhnlichen Tod zur Bildung vielerlei Legenden anregt. Die Broschüre „Der Schwarze Vere und Ostrach“ die im Rahmen des Heimatgeschichtliches aus Ostrach erschie- nen ist, kann für 2 Euro im Museum, in der Goetz‘sche Apotheke in Ostrach, bei der Firma Stangen-Schmid in Ostrach, im Bürgerbüro im Rathaus und bei allen Veran- staltungen „Wenn der Schwarze Vere kommt“ erworben Xaver Hohenleiter, der Schwarze Vere, im Gefängnisturm, werden. gezeichnet nach einer Vorlage von Johann Baptist Pfug Generalprobe geöfnet Ausverkauft! Alle fünf Auführungen des Theaterstücks „ Wenn der Schwarze Vere kommt“ so- wie das Konzert/Chorserenade „Räuber – Liebe – Feuerzauber“ sind ausverkauft. Die Nachfrage nach Karten ist immer noch sehr groß, es wird jedoch keine Zusatz- veranstaltungen geben. Kurzfristig wurde deshalb entschieden, daß die General- probe am 6. Juni öfentlich sein wird und die Auführung um 19.30 Uhr beginnt. Seit ein paar Tagen sind auch diese Karten über die Seite www.schwarzervere.de oder im Rathaus im Vorverkauf zum Stückpreis von 12.- € erhältlich. Die ersten fast 100 Karten sind bereits weg. Auch bei der Generalprobe werden alle Kostüme getragen, das Bühnenbild gezeigt und das gesamte Programm gespielt. Ebenso wird es die volle Bewirtung mit Getränken und Räuber-Gerichten geben.
