  • Continuum 119 a Belgian Art Perspective
CONTINUUM 119 A BELGIAN ART PERSPECTIVE OFF-PROGRAM GROUP SHOW 15/04/19 TO 31/07/19 Art does not belong to anyone, it usually passes on from one artist to the next, from one viewer to the next. We inherit it from the past when it served as a cultural testimony to who we were, and we share it with future generations, so they may understand who we are, what we fear, what we love and what we value. Over centuries, civilizations, societies and individuals have built identities around art and culture. This has perhaps never been more so than today. As an off-program exhibition, I decided to invite five Belgian artists whose work I particularly like, to answer back with one of their own contemporary works to a selection of older works that helped build my own Belgian artistic identity. In no way do I wish to suggest that their current work is directly inspired by those artists they will be confronted with. No, their language is mature and singular. But however unique it may be, it can also be looked at in the context of the subtle evolution from their history of art, as mutations into new forms that better capture who these artists are, and the world they live in. Their work can be experienced within an artistic continuum, in which pictorial elements are part of an inheritance, all the while remaining originally distinct. On each of these Belgian artists, I imposed a work from the past, to which they each answered back with a recent work of their own.

The Belgian Contribution to Global 1968 GERD-RAINER HORN ____Senior Lecturer in 20th Century History, Department of History – University of Warwick The calendar year of 1968 is almost universally associated with student un- rest. Belgium fits into this picture rather well, with major student mobilisa- tions in Leuven and Brussels occurring in the first half of that notoriously restless calendar year.1 Yet all-inclusive assessments of the social movements and political reconfigurations happening that year, not only in Belgium but elsewhere in Europe and North America as well, must go beyond the rela- tively narrow confines of university student milieus. For the purposes of this essay, I propose also to address fresh developments occurring within the worlds of labor and cultural productions.

Baugniet Marcel-Louis. (J.

THE FRIENDS’ BOOKLET SPRING > SUMMER 2019 Visit our website www.becomeafriend.be to be kept informed of the latest activities and events of the Friends and take full benefit of the advantages offered to you! Editor Christiane Waucquez Rue du Musée 9, 1000 Brussels Contact Friends of the RMFAB Rue du Musée 9, 1000 Brussels T +32 (0)2 511 41 16 [email protected] / www.becomeafriend.be Becomeafriend Design www.indekeuken.org This booklet has been created and printed with the help of Treetop. DEAR FRIENDS, In 2019, spring at the Museum will be Dutch! After many years of renovation, you will once again be able to admire the masterpieces of the Dutch Golden Age (see pp 6-7). For the first time in over 200 years, three fragments of the ‘Van Campen Family Portrait’ by Frans Hals (1582-1666) will be reunited and will interact with 3 other portraits by the artist (see pp 8-9). We hope that many of you will come to celebrate together this ‘Dutch Spring’ at the Friends’ Private Evening on Tuesday 12 March, 2019 (see pp 4-5). During this event you will also discover the new reception rooms of the ‘Grand Auditorium Philippe Roberts-Jones’. In the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium there is a sublime collection of ancient drawings and a selection of these, dating from the 18th century, will be exhibited in the ‘Cabinet of the Most Wonderful Drawings’ until 19 May 2019 (see pp 10-11). Contemporary art is not forgotten! The exhibition Wim Delvoye, a major figure of the Belgian art scene, will open on 22 March.
