M.A. in Political Science Sem-II. Paper VII Dr. Sarita Kumari, Associate Professor RLSY College Bakhtiyarpur, Patliputra University CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN INTERNATIONAL POLITICS EUROPEAN UNION (EU) The European Union (EU) is a unique political and economic partnership that currently consists of 27 member states. Built through a series of binding treaties, the Union is the latest stage in a process of integration that began after World War II to promote peace and economic recovery in Europe. These countries came together to make things better, easier, and safer for people. They agreed to work together and help each other. Currently, there are 27 members of the EU. These are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden. In June 2016, the United Kingdom decided to stop being part f the EU. So, from 31sat January 2020 the UK is no longer part f the European Union. History of the European Union The European Union started its journey over half a century ago. Visionary leaders came together to create economic and political stability to ensure long term peace in Europe. From then on, many others have followed in their footsteps, striving to build on this vision through successive treaties. Some aspiring leaders and pioneers were Konrad Adenauer, Joseph Bech, Johan Beyen, Winston Churchill, Alcide De Gasperi, Nicole Fontaine, Walter Hallstein and there were many greats. 1945 - 1959. A Peaceful Europe – The Beginnings Of Cooperation Around 1950, the European Coal and Steel Community begins to unite European countries economically and politically to secure lasting peace. -
The Legal Constitution of the European Union2
European Scientific Journal August 2018 /SPECIAL/ edition ISSN: 1857 – 7881 (Print) e - ISSN 1857- 7431 2 The Legal Constitution of the European Union Academic Director Dr. iur. Dr. phil. Franz-Rudolf Herber Frederic-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany Doi: 10.19044/esj.2018.c4p9 URL:http://dx.doi.org/10.19044/esj.2018.c4p9 Abstract World War II (1939 – 1945) was a catastrophe for the whole world and for Europe in particular. It is one of the great miracles of the 20th century that the West European war parties did draw a line and founded an economic alliance for coal and steel production. This economical alliance is based on common values and on the rule of law. A main problem of the European Union is to give a democratic legitimation to the European institutions. It is good that e.g. the European Parliament is elected directly, it is bad that e.g. the President of the European Commission is not elected directly. In some Member States of the European Union common values and common interests are only partim shared. The people of Great Britain did decide in 2016 to leave the European Union; according to the legal constitution of the European Union a leave is allowed. The main achievement of the European Union is the abolition of inter-European taxes and thus the promotion of economical relationships between the Member States of the European Union. The Euro that is the currency of (only) some Member States has become a global player. Keywords: European Union, Member States of the European Union, Treaties of the European Union, common values, common market, separation of powers, European Commission, European Parliament, President of the European Council, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, European Central Bank Introduction One should be aware of the fact what kind of brutal military violence the greatest war criminal of human history – Adolf Hitler (1883 – 1945) and his crazy followers – had brought to the former Czechoslovakia (CSSR)3. -
European Democracy: What Can the Church Contribute Today?
1 European Democracy: what can the Church contribute today? Dr. Ian Linden The origins of the European Union are not to be found in a Catholic conspiracy led by Schumann, de Gaspari and Adenauer driven by the arch-federalist, Jean Monnet and the Dutch Foreign Minister, Johan Beyen. Nor in a Catholic-Socialist plot with Paul Henri- Spaak and Sicco Mansholt. But as a response to the experience of total war, the Nazi occupation of Europe, and the rise of Stalinist communism. A Nunca mas - never again – lay behind an emergent consensus around democracy and cooperation involving some pooling of sovereignty, as an ethical and political imperative for post-war Europe. Earlier, the European resistance movements, Czech and Polish notably, in exile in London during the war years, had developed similar thinking and motivations. Nonetheless, some of the intellectual roots that nourished the European project drew on the “sap” of Christian tradition expressed most clearly in the thinking of Jacques Maritain, a Catholic layman, Catholic enough for Pope Paul VI later to want to make him a cardinal. Maritain sought to reach across the secular divide through the concept of integral humanism, and to refect what Weber might have called the “elective afnity” (a little less than a causal link) between Christianity and Democracy. Most importantly Maritain tried to integrate Aquinas, with his positive, socially constructive scafolding of law, with realist accounts of the actual practice of politics that acknowledged, in an Augustinian understanding, the sinfulness of the human condition. “I do not share the romantic optimism which ascribes to the people a judgement which is always just and instincts which are always upright”, he wrote in Christianity and Democracy. -
Branding Brussels Musically: Cosmopolitanism and Nationalism in the Interwar Years
BRANDING BRUSSELS MUSICALLY: COSMOPOLITANISM AND NATIONALISM IN THE INTERWAR YEARS Catherine A. Hughes A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music. Chapel Hill 2015 Approved by: Annegret Fauser Mark Evan Bonds Valérie Dufour John L. Nádas Chérie Rivers Ndaliko © 2015 Catherine A. Hughes ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Catherine A. Hughes: Branding Brussels Musically: Cosmopolitanism and Nationalism in the Interwar Years (Under the direction of Annegret Fauser) In Belgium, constructions of musical life in Brussels between the World Wars varied widely: some viewed the city as a major musical center, and others framed the city as a peripheral space to its larger neighbors. Both views, however, based the city’s identity on an intense interest in new foreign music, with works by Belgian composers taking a secondary importance. This modern and cosmopolitan concept of cultural achievement offered an alternative to the more traditional model of national identity as being built solely on creations by native artists sharing local traditions. Such a model eluded a country with competing ethnic groups: the Francophone Walloons in the south and the Flemish in the north. Openness to a wide variety of music became a hallmark of the capital’s cultural identity. As a result, the forces of Belgian cultural identity, patriotism, internationalism, interest in foreign culture, and conflicting views of modern music complicated the construction of Belgian cultural identity through music. By focusing on the work of the four central people in the network of organizers, patrons, and performers that sustained the art music culture in the Belgian capital, this dissertation challenges assumptions about construction of musical culture. -
