THE STORY OF FOUNTAIN: HARD FACTS AND SOFT SPECULATION Thierry de Duve ABSTRACT Thierry de Duve’s essay is anchored to the one and perhaps only hard fact that we possess regarding the story of Fountain: its photo in The Blind Man No. 2, triply captioned “Fountain by R. Mutt,” “Photograph by Alfred Stieglitz,” and “THE EXHIBIT REFUSED BY THE INDEPENDENTS,” and the editorial on the facing page, titled “The Richard Mutt Case.” He examines what kind of agency is involved in that triple “by,” and revisits Duchamp’s intentions and motivations when he created the fictitious R. Mutt, manipulated Stieglitz, and set a trap to the Independents. De Duve concludes with an invitation to art historians to abandon the “by” questions (attribution, etc.) and to focus on the “from” questions that arise when Fountain is not seen as a work of art so much as the bearer of the news that the art world has radically changed. Mentally I was not spelling art with a capital A. — Beatrice Wood1 No doubt, Marcel Duchamp’s best known and most controversial readymade is a men’s urinal tipped on its side, signed R. Mutt, dated 1917, and titled Fountain. The 2017 centennial of Fountain brought us a harvest of new books and articles on the famous or infamous urinal. I read most of them in the hope of gleaning enough newly verified facts to curtail my natural tendency to speculate. But newly verified facts are few and far between. -

Title: Proposal to Encode Heterodox Chess Symbols in the UCS Source: Garth Wallace Status: Individual Contribution Date: 2016-10-25 Introduction The UCS contains symbols for the game of chess in the Miscellaneous Symbols block. These are used in figurine notation, a common variation on algebraic notation in which pieces are represented in running text using the same symbols as are found in diagrams. While the symbols already encoded in Unicode are sufficient for use in the orthodox game, they are insufficient for many chess problems and variant games, which make use of extended sets. 1. Fairy chess problems The presentation of chess positions as puzzles to be solved predates the existence of the modern game, dating back to the mansūbāt composed for shatranj, the Muslim predecessor of chess. In modern chess problems, a position is provided along with a stipulation such as “white to move and mate in two”, and the solver is tasked with finding a move (called a “key”) that satisfies the stipulation regardless of a hypothetical opposing player’s moves in response. These solutions are given in the same notation as lines of play in over-the-board games: typically algebraic notation, using abbreviations for the names of pieces, or figurine algebraic notation. Problem composers have not limited themselves to the materials of the conventional game, but have experimented with different board sizes and geometries, altered rules, goals other than checkmate, and different pieces. Problems that diverge from the standard game comprise a genre called “fairy chess”. Thomas Rayner Dawson, known as the “father of fairy chess”, pop- ularized the genre in the early 20th century. -

If a player’s King is threatened with capture, “ check” (Persian: “Shah”) is declared, and the player must move so that his King is n o longer threatened. If there is no possible move to relieve the King of the threat, he is in “checkmate” (Persian: “shahmat,” meaning, “the king is at a loss”). -

Jess Rudolph Shogi – the Chess of Japan Its History and Variants When chess was first invented in India by the end of the sixth century of the current era, probably no one knew just how popular or wide spread the game would become. Only a short time into the second millennium – if not earlier – chess was being played as far as the most distant lands of the known world – the Atlantic coast of Europe and Japan. All though virtually no contact existed for centuries to come between these lands, people from both cultures were playing a game that was very similar; in Europe it was to become the chess most westerners know today and in Japan it was shogi – the Generals Game. Though shogi has many things in common with many other chess variants, those elements are not always clear because of the many differences it also has. Sadly, how the changes came about is not well known since much of the early history of shogi has been lost. In some ways the game is more similar to the Indian chaturanga than its neighboring cousin in China – xiangqi. In other ways, it’s closer to xiangqi than to any other game. In even other ways it has similarities to the Thai chess of makruk. Most likely it has elements from all these lands. It is generally believed that chess came to Japan from China through the trade routs in Korea in more than one wave, the earliest being by the end of tenth century, possibly as early as the eighth. -

In so doing, Rusty set a record as the first person to capture the state champion title in three different decades. His previous wins came in 1992 and 1969(!) [Read June 19th, 1847.] WHATEVER difference of opinion may exist as to the introduction of Chess into Europe, its Asiatic origin is undoubted, although the question of its birth-place is still open to discussion, and will be adverted to in this essay. Its more immediate design, however, is to illustrate the principles and practice of the game itself from such Oriental sources as have hitherto escaped observation, and, especially, to introduce to particular notice a variety of Chess which may, on fair grounds, be considered more ancient than that which is now generally played, and lead to a theory which, if it should be esta- blished, would materially affect our present opinions on its history. In the life of Timur by Ibn Arabshah1, that conqueror, whose love of chess forms one of numerous examples among the great men of all nations, is stated to have played, in preference, at a more complicated game, on a larger board, and with several additional pieces. Chapter 37 Games for three [Three-player chess has a long history. Marinelli’s game of 1722 was seminal, and other early examples cited in the first edition were a triangular game (Regensburg 1765), Lallemont’s game of 1802, and Wildt’s Burgspiel of 1803. Thereafter three-player games appear fairly frequently, those below being amongst the best known or having enjoyed some favour. Nevertheless, they are arguably the most unsatisfactory of all multi-player chess games, because the disparity when two gang up against one is greatest.
