Mr. Jeffery Morehouse Executive Director, Bring Abducted Children Home and Father of a Child Kidnapped to Japan House Foreign Affairs Committee Monday, December 10, 2018 Reviewing International Child Abduction Thank you to Chairman Smith and the committee for inviting me here to share my expertise and my personal experience on the ongoing crisis and crime of international parental child abduction in Japan. Japan is internationally known as a black hole for child abduction. There have been more than 400 U.S. children kidnapped to Japan since 1994. To date, the Government of Japan has not returned a single American child to an American parent. Bring Abducted Children Home is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the immediate return of internationally abducted children being wrongfully detained in Japan and strives to end Japan's human rights violation of denying children unfettered access to both parents. We also work with other organizations on the larger goal of resolving international parental child abduction worldwide. We are founding partners in The Coalition to End International Parental Child Abduction uniting organizations to work passionately to end international parental kidnapping of children through advocacy and public policy reform. At the beginning of this year The G7 Kidnapped to Japan Reunification Project formed as an international alliance of partners who are parents and organizations from several countries including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The objective is to bring about a rapid resolution to this crisis affecting the human rights of thousands of children abducted to or within Japan. Many Japanese citizens and officials have shared with me that they are deeply ashamed of these abductions and need help from the U.S. -

M-Phazes is into developing artists and collaborates heavy with other producers. He developed and produced Kimbra, KYLE, Amy Shark, and Ruel before they broke. He put his energy into Ruel beginning at age 13 and guided him to RCA. M-Phazes produced Amy Shark’s successful songs including “Love Songs Aint for Us” cowritten by Ed Sheeran. He worked extensively with KYLE before he broke and remains one of his main producers. In 2017, Phazes was nominated for Producer of the Year at the APRA Awards alongside Flume. In 2018 he won 5 ARIA awards including Producer of the Year. His recent releases are with Remi Wolf, VanJess, and Kiiara. Introduction to black hole entropy and supersymmetry Bernard de Wit∗ Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics, Kyoto University, Japan Institute for Theoretical Physics & Spinoza Institute, Utrecht University, The Netherlands Abstract In these lectures we introduce some of the principles and techniques that are relevant for the determination of the entropy of extremal black holes by either string theory or supergravity. We consider such black holes with N =2andN =4 supersymmetry, explaining how agreement is obtained for both the terms that are leading and those that are subleading in the limit of large charges. We discuss the relevance of these results in the context of the more recent developments. 1. Introduction The aim of these lectures is to present a pedagogical introduction to re- cent developments in string theory and supergravity with regard to black hole entropy. In the last decade there have been many advances which have thoroughly changed our thinking about black hole entropy. Supersymmetry has been an indispensable ingredient in all of this, not just because it is an integral part of the theories we consider, but also because it serves as a tool to keep the calculations tractable. Comparisons between the macroscopic and the microscopic entropy, where the latter is defined as the logarithm of the degeneracy of microstates of a certain brane or string configuration, were first carried out in the limit of large charges, assuming the Bekenstein- Hawking area law on the macroscopic (supergravity) side. Later on also subleading corrections could be evaluated on both sides and were shown to be in agreement, although the area law ceases to hold. -

There are few furnishings and little to suggest anything about the kind of personalities that live there. There are two items of note- a radio in the corner (which is already on and playing music from the 1940s) and some sort of listening device with a crude looking set of headphones. Norah (20s) sits in a chair with the headphones on and waits. After a moment Ellen (late 30s) enters. It is 1942. Ellen: Anything? Norah: No. Did you forget my cup of tea? Ellen: Joan is making it. She’ll be up in a minute. Norah: Where is she? Ellen: In the garden. Norah: What were the odds of us getting the only non-smoking flat in all of Haddington Road do you think? Ellen: You should both give up anyway. Smoking is bad for you. Norah: Says who? Ellen: Doctors. Norah: Would you go on. My doctor smokes. As does my dentist. Ellen: They do not. Norah: They practically eat the things. Particularly the dentist. 2 Ellen laughs wryly. Norah: All this chat about smoking makes me want one now. Ellen: Go on. I’ll keep an eye on things. Norah leaps up, grabs her bag and exits. Ellen walks over to the radio and lowers the volume. She then moves over to the listening device, picks up the headphones and starts to flick through a notebook that is on the table. -

Atkinson ________________________ Adviser Professor Lois Rosow School of Music Graduate Program ABSTRACT Since its opening in 1949, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Pulitzer Prize- winning musical South Pacific has been regarded as a masterpiece of the genre. Frequently revived, filmed for commercial release in 1958, and filmed again for television in 2000, it has reached audiences in the millions. It is based on selected stories from James A. Michener’s book, Tales of the South Pacific, also a Pulitzer Prize winner; the plots of these stories, and the musical, explore ethnic and cutural prejudice, a theme whose treatment underwent changes during the musical’s evolution. This study concerns the musico-dramatic evolution of South Pacific, a previously unexplored process revealing the collaborative interaction of two masters at the peak of their creative powers. It also demonstrates the authors’ gradual softening of the show’s social commentary. The structural changes, observable through sketches found in the papers of Rodgers and Hammerstein, show how the team developed their characterizations through musical styles, making changes that often indicate changes in characters’ psychological states; they also reveal changing approaches to the musicalization of the novel. Studying these changes provides intimate and, occasionally, unexpected insights into Rodgers and Hammerstein’s creative methods.
