Hi all. My name is Diane Raevsky and I will be the interim Interlake Career Center Specialist for the remainder of the year. The Career Center has moved to the library. I will be available Mondays and Tuesdays from 7:30 am – 3:30 pm.

Welcome to the Interlake Career Center Communiqué. I will be sending out a weekly newsletter to keep you updated with career opportunities including, but not limited to, WANIC/CTE classes, volunteer service hour opportunities, internships, summer jobs, college visits, and scholarship possibilities. I will not be able to include every opportunity, so please check the career center bulletin board regularly. Washington Network for Innovative Careers (WANIC). WANIC is a cooperative of seven local school districts plus DigiPen and Lake Institute of Technology. Member districts include: Bellevue, Issaquah, Lake Washington, Northshore, Riverview and Snoqualmie Valley.

WANIC is designed to help students explore possible careers. Programs are designed in three period blocks allowing extended time to not only learn the theory of a subject, but also to get real hands-on experience.

Additional Important Information:

 Students that are interested in CISCO or Automotive: Please get your applications in to Career specialist ASAP! These classes fill up fast!  Site visit reminders – Some WANIC courses require site visits. Site visits are required for Digipen and Lake Washington Tech. o For many classes, it is important that site visits are completed before May 1st. After that time there may not be spots available and the student may be waitlisted. o Site visit schedules: . Students applying to Digipen must attend one of these remaining Info Sessions: 4/13, 5/2, 5/23, 6/14, 7/18 or 8/10. Microsoft Summer High School Internship This paid 10-week summer program offers an exciting opportunity to work side-by-side with software engineering teams on real Microsoft technical projects. Get valuable experience, contribute to meaningful work, and receive support from a mentor (eligible for Puget Sound students only).

Microsoft High school Bootcamp This 3-day summer program provides an enriching environment to learn more about the software engineering field. QUALIFICATIONS

 High school juniors and seniors in the Puget Sound region of Washington state  Have demonstrated an interest in technology  Have a basic grasp of HTML, Visual Basic, or other programming language  Be at least 16 years old and have a legal right to work in the U.S. for the duration of the internship (not required for the High School Bootcamp)  Be available to work full-time for 10 consecutive weeks (June 26 - August 31, 2017) or be available to attend all 3 days of the High School Bootcamp (August 9 - 11, 2017)  Have not previously been hired as a Microsoft High School Intern (previous High School Bootcamp attendees are encouraged to apply for the Internship Program)  All high school students in the Puget Sound region are welcome to apply. Youthforce, the career development program of the Boys and Girls Clubs of King County. Our mission is to level the professional playing field for underserved youth, empowering them to develop a vision for their future and providing the experiences, resources and networks they need to achieve that positive vision.

Our annual Teen Employment Conference is a month away on Saturday, April 22! The conference is a fantastic opportunity for teens to come together and participate in engaging employment-prep and career-exploration workshops and to meet a range of employers and community based organizations during a resource fair. The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) – Seattle Post and the Puget Sound Engineering & Science Scholarship Fund:  2017 College Scholarship Programs. Students who apply must be accepted for full time study towards a bachelor’s degree in science, engineering or related fields of study at an accredited college or university.  Applications will be accepted until March 31, 2017. Apply online at http://www.psessf.org. There are detailed instructions on the website.  There are two scholarship sources: The Society of American Military Engineers – Seattle Post o $12,500 in SAME college scholarships (one high school scholarship of $1,500 and eleven high school scholarships of $1,000 each) will be awarded to graduating high school seniors attending an accredited college or university in the fall of 2017. o Puget Sound Engineering& Science Scholarship Fund: $5,000 in PSE & SSF College scholarships will be awarded to graduating high schools seniors or currently enrolled full- time college students (if sponsored by a SAME Seattle Post Member) that will be attending an accredited college or university in the fall of 2017.  Selection and notification of recipients will be made in April 2017.

Orientation for Spanish Speaking Parents at WSU! La Bienvenida is a WSU orientation program focusing on helping all students and their families, regardless of their immigration status, become familiar with the university in the Spanish language. Some of our workshops include how to apply for housing, understanding financial aid, and navigating through the many resources that WSU offers. This event is also focused on educating parents on how to support their students’ transition to college plus other important WSU information. La Bienvenida is currently scheduled for May 20-21, 2017, and you can find out more about this event at our website http://labienvenida.wsu.edu/.

Seattle University Spring Preview Days:

These events provide a great opportunity for high school sophomores and juniors to explore our campus and learn more about SU. Each event will include an introduction to the student experience, information about the admissions process, a student panel, and a campus tour. Parents and guests are welcome to attend.

Spring Preview Days will take place on:

 Wednesday, March 29th: 1:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.  Tuesday, April 4th: 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.  Monday, April 10th: 1:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m. On Thursday, April 13th SU are offering Building Connections Spring Preview Day which is geared towards students from historically underrepresented backgrounds. This program is designed to showcase our commitment to providing a diverse and inclusive campus environment. This event provides a great opportunity for students to explore SU and connect with their communities on campus. This event will take place between 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

UW NURSE CAMP 2017

This is a FREE week-long day camp geared toward increasing access and opportunities in nursing to diverse and first in their family to go to college high school sophomores and juniors who are at least 16 years of age by the first day of camp.

In camp you will have the opportunity to:  Shadow nurses at University of Washington Medical Center in various hospital units  Get your CPR certification  Learn how to prepare for college and how to prepare to get into nursing school  Have a chance to learn in the School of Nursing Learning Lab@  Connect with nurses, students and faculty at UW, your future mentors who are committed to your success.
