The 2012-2013 budgeted STEM fund is $10,000. SPEEA has received 25 applications requesting $38,800 of funding for STEM related activities. The combined budget for these teams and events exceeds $480,000. The committee has met to review the applications and discuss the distribution of funds. Our funding recommendations are summarized below. Report to Our Community • 2014 - 2015 South Seattle College and the South Seattle College Foundation Message from the President and Foundation Chair Dear Friends, During the past year we’ve seen students in our college transfer programs receive accolades on the national stage and earn significant awards closer to home, demonstrating that South Seattle College is a great choice for students who want to earn a transfer degree. For years, community college has been known as a great option for students seeking professional technical certificates, developmental classes, or continuing education. While that’s still true, it’s also the case that more and more students are realizing what community colleges have been saying for years: you can get an education that prepares you in every way to transfer to a four-year university and position yourself for future academic and career success. Emblematic of the type of academic achievement that is possible at a college like South is graduate David Yama. David is the top scholar in the nation, as recognized by the community college honor society, Phi Theta Kappa, and he is a recipient of the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship. You will learn more about David inside this edition of the Report to Our Community. Many students say that their success started when they received their first scholarships from the South Seattle College Foundation. For many of the 319 students who received scholarships this past year, a scholarship represents more than just freedom from financial worry; it also signifies that someone believes that they can succeed. Sometimes that is all a student needs to inspire them to do more, try harder, and dare to reach for their dreams.

Acronyms/School Jargon
Acronyms/School Jargon 504s - The word “504” refers to Section 504 of a federal law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities. Students with a 504 plan may request accommodations from the school such as handouts of lectures or extra time on tests. 5K - This is a 5-kilometer run that is a required final for all PE (Physical Education) classes (non-COVID). This includes classes such as yoga and dance. Grade is based on improving over the semester and on completing the self-chosen running time. ACT - American College Testing. One of the standardized tests for college applications. Typically taken in the winter/spring of the junior year or fall of the senior. Students sometimes take both the SAT and the ACT and submit the better score to colleges. (https://www.act.org/) Colleges are test-optional during COVID. ADD - Attention Deficit Disorder ADHD - Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder. Angel Program - A PTSA program that supplies weekend food and other items (e.g. shampoo & clothes) to students who request them.
