A’s News Clips, Tuesday, April 12, 2011 Kurt Suzuki hits game-winning home run in 10th inning as A's beat White Sox By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune CHICAGO -- The opportunities were few for the A's on Monday, but Kurt Suzuki was ready when he got his. His homer in the top of the 10th off Jesse Crain lifted the A's to a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox in front of 20,057 fans at U.S. Cellular Field. It marked the A's third straight victory, and it was another example of their ability to make a lot out of a little. Left-hander Mark Buehrle bottled them up for eight innings and held them hitless through five. The A's managed just five hits total, yet claimed their fourth win in the past five games and evened their record at 5-5. "We dropped too many of those last year, those 10-, 11-inning ballgames," A's starting pitcher Dallas Braden said. "We'd like to turn that ship around and be on the other end of that." The A's went 4-7 in extra-inning affairs in 2010, the third-worst record in the American League. Good karma might be the only explanation for how they even extended Monday's game past the ninth. The Sox led 1-0 when Matt Thornton relieved Buehrle to start the ninth. Andy LaRoche greeted Thornton with a double. After Coco Crisp lined out, Daric Barton lofted a deep fly to the left-field corner.

© Copyright, Princeton University Press. No part of this book may be distributed, posted, or reproduced in any form by digital or mechanical means without prior written permission of the publisher. CHAPTER 1 Fair Ball! Why Adjustments Are Needed King Arthur’s quest for it in the Middle Ages became a large part of his legend. Monty Python and Indiana Jones launched their searches in popular 1974 and 1989 movies. The mythic quest for the Holy Grail, the name given in Western tradition to the chal- ice used by Jesus Christ at his Passover meal the night before his death, is now often a metaphor for a quintessential search. In the illustrious history of baseball, the “holy grail” is a ranking of each player’s overall value on the baseball diamond. Because player skills are multifaceted, it is not clear that such a ranking is possible. In comparing two players, you see that one hits home runs much better, whereas the other gets on base more often, is faster on the base paths, and is a better fielder. So which player should rank higher? In Baseball’s All-Time Best Hitters, I identified which players were best at getting a hit in a given at-bat, calling them the best hitters. Many reviewers either disapproved of or failed to note my definition of “best hitter.” Although frequently used in base- ball writings, the terms “good hitter” or best hitter are rarely defined. In a July 1997 Sports Illustrated article, Tom Verducci called Tony Gwynn “the best hitter since Ted Williams” while considering only batting average.

  • Al Brancato This Article Was Written by David E
Al Brancato This article was written by David E. Skelton The fractured skull Philadelphia Athletics shortstop Skeeter Newsome suffered on April 9, 1938 left a gaping hole in the club’s defense. Ten players, including Newsome after he recovered, attempted to fill the void through the 1939 season. One was Al Brancato, a 20- year-old September call-up from Class-A ball who had never played shortstop professionally. Enticed by the youngster’s cannon right arm, Athletics manager Connie Mack moved him from third base to short in 1940. On June 21, after watching Brancato retire Chicago White Sox great Luke Appling on a hard-hit grounder, Mack exclaimed, “There’s no telling how good that boy is going to be.”1 Though no one in the organization expected the diminutive (5-feet-nine and 188 pounds) Philadelphia native’s offense to cause fans to forget former Athletics infield greats Home Run Baker or Eddie Collins, the club was satisfied that Brancato could fill in defensively. “You keep on fielding the way you are and I’ll do the worrying about your hitting,” Mack told Brancato in May 1941.2 Ironically, the youngster’s defensive skills would fail him before the season ended. In September, as the club spiraled to its eighth straight losing season, “baseball’s grand old gentleman” lashed out. “The infielders—[Benny] McCoy, Brancato and [Pete] Suder—are terrible,” Mack grumbled. “They have hit bottom. Suder is so slow it is painful to watch him; Brancato is erratic and McCoy is—oh, he’s just McCoy, that’s all.” 3 After the season ended Brancato enlisted in the US Navy following the country’s entry into the Second World War.

We’ve been voting by mail for four years in King County and each has been one of signifi cant change. King County voters have done a great job adjusting to change and you may appreciate knowing that your elections department has as well. With over 1.17 million voters spread out over more than 2,000 voting districts, the challenge to implement change, while protecting the integrity of each vote has been, at times, a monumental endeavor. In our quest to make elections processes more effi cient and reduce costs, the world of technology has certainly provided a range of remarkable options. However, it’s been our impatient, questioning and innovative work force that has been the strong, beating heart of the most effective, forward-thinking changes. Thanks to them, we have achieved greater effi ciency, resolved problems and improved our ability to meet expectations of King County voters. We are working to provide outstanding voter experiences, employing means that offer more choices each year. Multi-channel delivery, empowerment, simplifi ed and streamlined options, and relevancy-- this is a vocabulary that is associated today with service. We have also benefi tted from the help of many strategic partnerships, including vendors, other public agencies, and organizations. We are working together to make sure more citizens are engaged in voting with better understanding of the voting process.
