These notes are based upon 14 meetings between 6th-9th October 2015, plus one further meeting in January 2016. This document will ultimately form an appendix to the final report for ‘The Operator’s Story’ piece Although the findings have been arranged and structured by Imperial College London, they remain a collation of thoughts and statements from interviewees, and continue to be the opinions of those interviewed, rather than of Imperial College London. Prefacing the notes is a summary of Imperial College’s key findings based on comments made, which will be drawn out further in the final report for ‘The Operator’s Story’. Method This content is a collation in note form of views expressed in the interviews that were conducted for this study. Comments are not attributed to specific individuals, as agreed with the interviewees and TfL. However, in some cases it is noted that a comment was made by an individual external not employed by TfL (‘external commentator’), where it is appropriate to draw a distinction between views expressed by TfL themselves and those expressed about their organisation. -

Read on to find out more about our projects. 1 The year at a glance For VINCI Railways, 2018 was a year of consolidation – including that of the South Europe Atlantic High-Speed Line (SEA HSL) between Tours and Bordeaux, whose commercial success enabled us to finalise one of the largest refinancing operations in Europe. The entire 16,000-km GSM-Rail network, managed by SYNERAIL, is operational and, in Martinique, passengers have started using the island’s first bus rapid transit (BRT) system. -

Urban Transport XXIII 143 COMPARISON BETWEEN BUS RAPID TRANSIT AND LIGHT-RAIL TRANSIT SYSTEMS: A MULTI-CRITERIA DECISION ANALYSIS APPROACH MARÍA EUGENIA LÓPEZ LAMBAS1, NADIA GIUFFRIDA2, MATTEO IGNACCOLO2 & GIUSEPPE INTURRI2 1TRANSyT, Transport Research Centre, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain 2Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture (DICAR), University of Catania, Italy ABSTRACT The construction choice between two different transport systems in urban areas, as in the case of Light-Rail Transit (LRT) and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) solutions, is often performed on the basis of cost-benefit analysis and geometrical constraints due to the available space for the infrastructure. Classical economic analysis techniques are often unable to take into account some of the non-monetary parameters which have a huge impact on the final result of the choice, since they often include social acceptance and sustainability aspects. The application of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) techniques can aid decision makers in the selection process, with the possibility to compare non-homogeneous criteria, both qualitative and quantitative, and allowing the generation of an objective ranking of the different alternatives. The coupling of MCDA and Geographic Information System (GIS) environments also permits an easier and faster analysis of spatial parameters, and a clearer representation of indicator comparisons. Based on these assumptions, a LRT and BRT system will be analysed according to their own transportation, economic, social and environmental impacts as a hypothetical exercise; moreover, through the use of MCDA techniques a global score for both systems will be determined, in order to allow for a fully comprehensive comparison. Town of Cary Comprehensive Transportation Pllan Chapter 6 – Introduction At the time of the 2001 Comprehensive Transportation Plan, the Town of Cary had no bus service other than Route 301 operated by the Triangle Transit Authority (TTA). Since then, Cary has expanded its transit Transit services considerably, with a new local fixed-route service for the public and demand-responsive paratransit for seniors and persons with disabilities. TTA has added routes as well. As the Town’s Element population continues rising and travel demand increases, the Town plans to expand its local service, capturing riders coming from and going to planned residential and commercial developments. Situated amidst the Research Triangle of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, Cary is served today by multiple transit providers. Fixed route bus services within Cary are provided by C-Tran and TTA. C-Tran, Wake Coordinated Transportation Services (WCTS), and the Center for Volunteer Caregiving provide demand-responsive paratransit services. WCTS also provides rural general public transit via its TRACS service program; however, services are not provided for urban trips within Cary. Amtrak operates daily train service. This chapter describes current fixed-route transit and paratransit conditions, projected growth in the Town, and proposed future service changes. C-Tran Overview C-Tran is the Town of Cary’s sponsored transit service which originated as a door-to-door service for seniors and disabled residents in 2001. Station Facilities Survey Form
Station Facilities Campaigning for a bigger, better Railway Survey Form www.railfuture.org.uk This form has been produced by Railfuture’s Passenger Group in 2020. Railfuture has produced various station survey forms over the years, and several are on the Railfuture website, as rail user groups (RUGs) and others may prefer different formats. However, this form has the latest set of questions and is the only form currently being used by Railfuture’s volunteers. How to use this form This form is intended to be downloaded by members of Railfuture branches, affiliated user groups, Community Rail Partnerships or others who wish to carry out surveys of the facilities at their local station(s) for the purposes of their campaign work. This could include allowing branches and user groups to collect and analyse data on station facilities in their area, campaigning for improvements to facilities at particular stations; or to highlight examples of good practice or innovative ways of delivering improvements to station facilities. For ease of use this form has been broken down into separate sections covering different areas of the station and types of facility (e.g. access to the station; parking; buying a ticket; information and wayfinding; interchange with other public transport; etc.) provided. Obviously, not all of these sections will be applicable to every station as the facilities will vary according to the size, level of usage and location of individual stations, so the layout of this form is designed to enable users to skip those sections that are not applicable: this is also why the sections relating to interchange with trams and metro services as they apply to comparatively few stations. -

DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING, FINANCE & ECONOMICS GRIFFITH BUSINESS SCHOOL GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy July 2006 ii ABSTRACT This thesis describes the rail gauge decision-making processes of the Australian colonies in the period 1850 – 1901. Federation in 1901 delivered a national system of railways to Australia but not a national railway system. Thus the so-called “standard” gauge of 4ft. 8½in. had not become the standard in Australia at Federation in 1901, and has still not. It was found that previous studies did not examine cause and effect in the making of rail gauge choices. This study has done so, and found that rail gauge choice decisions in the period 1850 to 1901 were not merely one-off events. Rather, those choices were part of a search over fifty years by government representatives seeking colonial identity/autonomy and/or platforms for election/re-election. Consistent with this interpretation of the history of rail gauge choice in the Australian colonies, no case was found where rail gauge choice was a function of the disciplined search for the best value-for-money option. -

Ropeway People Movers for Ski Resorts
Ropeway People Movers for Ski Resorts by Andrew S. Jakes* Abstract Las Vegas, Reno, Sun City, Foxwoods, Tunica, Broad Beach, and several other international mega-resorts, have discovered that People Movers (Automated Guideway Transit) improve their image and subsequently attract new customers. In addition to presenting the rope-propelled People Mover technologies, this paper reviews how specific installations have solved visitor circulation needs in many hotel resort complexes in Las Vegas and elsewhere. This approach can be duplicated to many ski resorts worldwide since the level of ridership in Las Vegas frequently exceeds levels typically found on ski resort shuttle bus systems worldwide. We particularly focus on existing, proven technologies and specific installations, including ropeway Horizontal Elevators (Mandalay Bay, Mirage, Primadonna, and Circus-Circus Automated People Mover installations). People Mover systems represent major changes and advances in equipment, facilities, operations, and services in comparison with conventional rail, bus, taxi, and other street modes. System performance and capacities can be tailored to match expected loads and a broad range of performance and operational requirements. Suppliers usually claim, with justification, that they can adapt their product to buyer's specific needs. Vehicle size can be expanded or reduced. Seats can be added or removed from vehicles. Various grades and curves can be accommodated by altering guideway design and speeds. Riding the circulation People Mover system can be as convenient, safe and comfortable as riding a modern elevator. Stations can be sufficiently numerous to provide development-wide access. Passengers experience little or no waiting for vehicles. The operation can be environmentally friendly with no emissions, very little noise and minimum visual impacts. -

TYNE & WEAR METRO A1.1 The Tyne and Wear Metro was the first modern light rail scheme opened in the UK, coming into service between 1980 and 1984. At a cost of £284 million, the scheme comprised the connection of former suburban rail alignments with new railway construction in tunnel under central Newcastle and over the Tyne. Further extensions to the system were opened to Newcastle Airport in 1991 and to Sunderland, sharing 14 km of existing Network Rail track, in March 2002. -

PR110/18 28 December 2018 Arrival of New Generation Light Rail Vehicle Two brand new Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) were delivered to the MTR Corporation’s Tuen Mun Depot today (28 December 2018). The new generation LRVs inherit the smart exterior design and colour scheme of the previous generation with sleek front and rear ends, and the driving cabin will provide a wider sightline for Light Rail Captains. The new LRVs will also bring a number of enhancements to passengers’ journeys, including the improved LED lighting system to enhance the ambiance of the train saloons, and improved handrail and straphanger arrangements, etc. A total of 40 new LRVs were ordered in 2016 from CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co., Ltd., among which 30 LRVs will replace the existing LRVs while the rest will help to expand the Light Rail fleet size to 150 by 2023. The remaining LRVs will be delivered to Hong Kong in batches between 2019 and 2023. The new LRVs have gone through a series of tests and examinations at the manufacturer’s factory before acceptance and delivery to Hong Kong. Upon arrival, they will further undergo a series of stringent testing and commissioning procedures. In addition, they are required to pass the necessary safety and performance tests as well as obtain approval from Government authorities before entering passenger service.
