Verified Purchase. This is a well-written book, easy to read and to follow. But it is not for the uninitiated, You need to know the basics of the Events, Dates and people then this book will bring you through the various politics of the era and discussions on any differences in scholarly interpretation. There is extensive references throughout to ancient and modern historians alike and I particularly like the analogies made with more modern event such as the American Civil War and World War II. I would also commend this on Kindle though I do have some problems with identifying the page numbers so that I can refer to it in my own essays. Overall, it is a great book and an absolute must for students of Ancient Greece. Report abuse. Very "Gibbonesque". The first in a four volume series, this book fills in some important historical information that took place between Herodotus and Thucydides. It helps The Outbreak of the Peloponnesian War the stage for a more thorough reading of Thucydides. Kagan isn't afraid to hold other scholar's feet to the fire and put their theories to the test. If you have not read Thucydides, this first volume will make a great primer for the Peloponnesian War. I read Thucydides first and found this volume helped me understand Athens in the years leading up to the war. Kagan is a good writer, entertaining while not being parochial. If you are going to spend four volumes with a history professor, it helps to know in advance he is a good writer. Besides understanding more about the war, after I read this book, I felt I understood Thucydides perhaps more than I used to. Translate review to English. Very detailed. Very good. This war demonstrates how similar wars and their preludes are over time and this book should be mandatory reading for our politicians who are so keen on going to war and then surprised when they don't turn out the way they thought they would Iraq ring any bells? America is frequently compared to ancient Rome. I think the US is more similar to the Athens of this era. A couple criticisms accounting for the four stars rather than five : no maps. I had to download several maps of the period from the internet. The author also uses terms either in Greek script which I can't read, unfortunately or transcribed in Roman script without defining them, either in the text or the footnotes, so you have to look them up, e.
