Abstract We studied phylogenetic relationships among major clades in the tooth carps (Cyprinodontiformes) based on a concatenated DNA se- quence alignment of two mitochondrial and three nuclear gene segments, totalling 2553 bp, in 66 ingroup terminals. The inferred tree sup- ports monophyly of the major tooth carp subgroups, aplocheiloids and cyprinodontoids, and of several aplocheiloid subclades correspond- ing to the well-established families (Aplocheilidae, Nothobranchiidae, Rivulidae), each of which is restricted to major continental settings (India-Madagascar, Africa, South America). Contrary to previous molecular studies, our tree supports a sister-group relationship of the aplocheilids and nothobranchiids, rather than a nothobranchiid-rivulid clade. Within cyprinodontoids, the phylogeny matched more closely continent-scale distribution than current classification, suggesting that the delimitation of the families Cyprinodontidae, Poeciliidae, and Valenciidae is in need of revision. The East African Pantanodon stuhlmanni did not show close relationships with any other taxon in our analysis, suggesting that the phylogenetic position and classification of this rogue taxon is in need of further study. -

A 20 total of 34 non-Haplochromis species belonging to 10 families and 21 genera are recorded 21 from the system. Three of these are endemic and two others have been introduced in the 22 region. Six species are new records for the Lake Edward system. A species accumulation 23 curve indicates that we probably covered most of the non-Haplochromis species in the area 24 sampled during the recent expeditions. However, undetected species might still be present in 25 the Congolese part of the system, which is poorly sampled. -

Hartel2 Copeia 2011, No. 2, 242–250 Osteology Identifies Fundulus capensis Garman, 1895 as a Killifish in the Family Fundulidae (Atherinomorpha: Cyprinodontiformes) Lynne R. Parenti1 and Karsten E. Hartel2 Fundulus capensis Garman, 1895 was described from the unique holotype said to be from False Bay, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Largely ignored by killifish taxonomists, its classification has remained ambiguous for over a century. Radiography and computed tomography of the holotype reveal skeletal details that have been used in modern phylogenetic hypotheses of cyprinodontiform lineages. Osteological synapomorphies confirm it is a cyprinodontiform killifish and allow us to identify it to species. The first pleural rib on the second vertebra and a symmetrical caudal fin with hypural elements fused into a fan-shaped hypural plate corroborate its classification in the cyprinodontiform suborder Cyprinodontoidei. The twisted maxilla with an anterior hook and the premaxilla with an elongate ascending process both place it in the family Fundulidae. The pointed neurapophyses of the first vertebra that do not meet in the midline and do not form a spine exclude it from the family Poeciliidae. Presence of discrete exoccipital condyles excludes it from the subfamily Poeciliinae. Overall shape, position of fins, and meristic data agree well with those of the well-known North American killifish, F. heteroclitus. Fundulus capensis Garman, 1895, redescribed herein, is considered a subjective synonym of Fundulus heteroclitus (Linnaeus, 1766). Provenance of the specimen remains a mystery. UNDULUS capensis Garman, 1895 was described described from the Cape of Good Hope, is obscure’’ and it is from one specimen said to be from False Bay, Cape (Griffith, 1972:261) ‘‘ . -
Identification of Micropanchax Scheeli (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae: Aplocheilichthyinae) with the Description of a New Species of the Genus Poropanchax
IDENTIFICATION OF MICROPANCHAX SCHEELI (CYPRINODONTIFORMES: POECILIIDAE: APLOCHEILICHTHYINAE) WITH THE DESCRIPTION OF A NEW SPECIES OF THE GENUS POROPANCHAX by Rudolf H. WILDEKAMP (1) & Francisco J. MALUMBRES (2) ABSTRACT. - Two small poeciliid fish species from the West African coastal plains were identified in literature as Aplocheilichthys macrophthalmus scheeli or Aplocheilichthys scheeli. Both share the characteristic of extraordinarily long filamentous pelvic-fins in males but differ in habitat, male coloration and supra-orbital neuromast pattern. The type specimens of Aplocheilichthys macrophthalmus scheeli were compared to specimens identified as such in museum collec- tions. Based on the type series and additional material Aplocheilichthys macrophthalmus scheeli is reclassified as Micropanchax scheeli. The other species previously identified as Aplocheilichthys macrophthalmus scheeli is described herein as Poropanchax stigmatopygus. RÉSUMÉ. - Identification de Micropanchax scheeli (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae: Aplocheilichthyinae) avec la description d’une nouvelle espèce du genre Poropanchax. Deux petites espèces de Poeciliidae des plaines côtières d’Afrique de l’Ouest étaient identifiées dans la littérature comme Aplocheilichthys macrophthalmus scheeli ou Aplocheilichthys scheeli. Les deux partagent la présence, chez les mâles, de nageoires pelviennes extraordinaires en long filament, mais diffèrent par leur habitat, la coloration des mâles et la disposition supra-orbitale des neuromastes. Les spécimens-types d’Aplocheilichthys macrophthalmus scheeli ont été comparés aux spécimens identifiés comme tels dans les collections des musées. Sur la base d’une série-type et de maté- riel additionel, Aplocheilichthys macrophthalmus scheeli est redéfinie comme Micropanchax scheeli. L’autre espèce, pré- cédemment identifiée comme Aplocheilichthys macrophthalmus scheeli, est décrite ici comme Poropanchax stigmatopy- gus. Mitochondrial genomes of 26 cichlid species were amplified by long-range PCR followed by the 454 pyrosequencing on a GS Roche Junior platform. The primers for long-range PCR were designed specifically in the mitogenomic regions with low interspecific variability. The whole mitogenome of most species was amplified as three fragments using the following primer sets: for the region between position 2 500 bp and 7 300 bp (of mitogenome starting with tRNA-Phe), we used forward primers ZM2500F (5'-ACG ACC TCG ATG TTG GAT CAG GAC ATC C-3'), L2508KAW (Kawaguchi et al. 2001) or S-LA-16SF (Miya & Nishida 2000) and reverse primer ZM7350R (5'-TTA AGG CGT GGT CGT GGA AGT GAA GAA G-3'). Systematics of the Subfamily Poeciliinae Bonaparte (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae), with an Emphasis on the Tribe Cnesterodontini Hubbs

Reis** Osteological and soft anatomical features of representatives of poeciliine genera were studied to test the monophyly of the poeciliine tribes and to advance a hypothesis of relationships within the subfamily. The resultant hypothesis supports the proposal of a new classification for the subfamily Poeciliinae. Diagnoses are provided for suprageneric clades. The tribe Tomeurini is resurrected and the new tribes Brachyrhaphini and Priapichthyini as well as the supertribe Poeciliini are described. New usages of old tribe names are proposed based on the phylogenetic framework. Caracteres osteológicos e da anatomia mole de representantes dos gêneros de poeciliíneos foram estudados para se testar a monofilia das tribos de Poeciliinae e para propor uma hipótese de relações dentro da subfamília. A hipótese resultante suporta a proposição de uma nova classificação para a subfamília Poeciliinae. São fornecidas diagnoses para os clados supragenêricos. A tribo Tomeurini é ressuscitada e as novas tribos Brachyrhaphini e Priapichthyini bem como a supertribo Poeciliini são descritas. Novos usos para antigos nomes de tribos são propostos com base no arranjo filogenético. I. título CDD 19a ed. 597.929811 SINOPSE Estudou-se a sistemática filogenética e filogeografia das espécies do gênero Fluviphylax utilizando a associação das ferramentas moleculares, gene COI e região controle do DNA mitocondrial, e métodos baseados em dados morfométricos e morfológicos. No presente estudo foi possível evidenciar os processos que influenciaram a distribuição geográfica das linhagens do gênero Fluviphylax e suas relações filogenéticas e identificação de uma nova espécie para o gênero.
