Society Notice Board

Editor’s Comments: So much for the warm dry weather !! Still I’m happy, as with the chance of frosts now virtually gone, I finally got round to planting (127 plants) newly dug borders (well more like small gardens !!) just before the rain came...very handy. Because of that, I’ve not been near a railway since 19 April, so it will be pleasing to get out when I head back to south coast for a week in middle of June. It will be interesting to see what changes have occurred since 20 May timetable change and catch up with rolling stock movements.

Magazine: Any information / article on any railway related item will always be most welcome for inclusion in part or as a whole in the magazine. Your travel stories / anecdotes about far flung parts of the railway network, past or present can give pleasure to others or inform of places to visit. This railway hobby of ours is made all that more enjoyable by the sharing of information, so please consider sharing your knowledge and experiences. Please note that contributions for Out and About Sightings only should be sent to James Holloway, items for European News (and Sightings) to Robert Brown and for Wagon Corner and Light Rail & Metro News to Martin Hall. All other items should be sent to Trevor Roots / Peter Britcliffe. (All addresses are on Page 2) Neatly typed submissions are perfectly acceptable, but if you have a PC with Microsoft Word or Excel, then a document on CD is a bonus or better still e-mail them to the appropriate official. Good quality photographs are always welcome for inclusion in the magazine – colour or black and white clear prints of any railway subject will be considered but preferably digital photographs via e-mail. To credit members correctly please include your name with any submissions. Some items may be placed on our excellent website if we have insufficient space in the magazine, The latest date for articles / info for the next magazine is Wednesday 27th June 2007. Items for Out and About Sightings should be sent in to James a few days earlier if possible please.

SOUTHERN REGION, May 13th 1961

Thanks once again to Ken Pryce for sharing details of how things were in the days before the diesel locomotive finally ousted steam from the rail network. This was Ken’s 3rd trip out in 1961 with the Preston Branch of the RCTS, who were visiting for a two day attack of the London area loco sheds. Ken joined them at 07.45, at Bricklayers Arms Shed and a most interesting day ensued, as you will see from the following log.

10 Railway Cuttings

Michael Hillier’s Railway Cuttings Taxpayers could face a bill for tens of thousands of pounds thanks to the closure of the main south Wales rail line. First Great Western, Arriva Trains Wales and Freight Company EWS Rail today revealed they might seek compensation from Network Rail, the not-for-profit Infrastructure Company funded by the Government. But a Bridgend councillor, who sits on the Southeast Wales Transport Alliance, said: "Taxpayers shouldn't fund this." Thousands of passengers faced a week of disruption when scheduled £400m-resignalling work between Pontyclun and Baglan overran, shutting the Cardiff to Swansea track from Good Friday. Commuters also faced delays heading from the capital to London because six empty express trains, each of which could carry 500 passengers, were trapped in Swansea. Councillor Voisey said today: "Train operators should accept these things happen." EWS had to cancel 60 trains transporting coal, steel and oil because of the closure. A spokesman said: "It was a huge inconvenience to our customers who are major components of British industry and work on a supply-chain basis. "They need deliveries when they are planned to arrive." Asked if EWS would seek compensation from Network Rail, he replied: "There are standard procedures and any issue of compensation will be raised with Network Rail." A spokesman for First Great Western said if passengers wanted compensation, the company would seek reimbursement from Network Rail. He said: "There are structured mechanisms within commercial agreements for compensation so we will be considering that." Arriva's commercial director said: "There were costs to Arriva in providing replacement bus transport." "The final costs still need to be worked out but this is a matter between the company and Network Rail. Our key priority has been to ensure adequate transport was provided to minimize passenger disruption." A Network Rail spokeswoman said: "Last week's disruption was as much a disappointment for us as it was for our customers. We will be holding a full investigation."

Gordon Wharrie’s Railway Cuttings The Steam Museum is waving off prized locomotive Glorious, which will take students on a learning curve. The East London-based Railway School will have a loan of the 1968 diesel engine for seven years. Students will be able to drive Glorious and practice maintaining it on a disused line, which closed last year, between North Woolwich and customhouse. Rail School is recruiting students from the deprived London boroughs of Newham, Hackney and Tower Hamlets for the new venture, which will train thousands. The business manager at Steam, said: "The students will be driving Glorious under supervision and using the locomotive to learn the basics of the engine workings. It will be invaluable to them, as they will have a full-scale locomotive to practice on. The locomotive, which the museum acquired in 2004, is only on loan. "The engine is and will remain part of the museum's collection as it shows the way the western region made the transition from steam to diesel," he said. The Steam curator said: "We are delighted that Glorious is to be part of this exciting project to help young people. The new home will give this locomotive a new lease of life by allowing her to operate as a working locomotive and so bring her back to her former glory. We wish Rail School and all the project partners every success in this innovative and worthwhile venture." Glorious, which weighs 117 tonnes, came to Swindon from the National Railway Museum at York in 2004. The Director of the Rail School Project said: "We are deeply moved by the generosity of Steam and Swindon Council in entrusting Glorious to this project. This project is about creating a working railway that will launch thousands of young people, especially those at risk of exclusion, into new, lifelong careers over the next few years. There's nothing like this in Britain, and the closure of this railway has presented us with a unique opportunity."

Rail links between Gloucestershire and London are among the worst in the country, MPs have been told. A call has gone out to Ministers to back plans to double two stretches of line to improve the reliability and punctuality of the service. The Rail Minister said he would be "more than happy" to look at the proposals. It came amid further criticism during Transport Questions at Parliament of First Great Western, which operates the train service between Gloucestershire and London. Politicians from all parties have complained of delays, cancellations, overcrowding and fare hikes. They demanded immediate action from ministers and train company bosses.

11 Speaking in the Commons, Tory MP for the Cotswold’s said: "In terms of distance from London, the train service to Gloucestershire is one of the worst in the country. To improve the reliability and punctuality of the service - again, it is operated by First Great Western trains - would the Minister support an increase in rail capacity when that is put to him by Network Rail? "The company has feasibility money to change the line from a single track to double track from Swindon to Kemble and from Oxford to Worcester Shrub Hill. Will the Minister support those proposals when they come before him?" A spokesman said: "If he wishes to write to me with more details of the proposal, I will be more than happy to look at them." Responding to criticism of the train operator, a First Great Western spokesman told MPs: "It accepts that its performance following the production of the December 2006 timetable was not acceptable." Also stated was that First Great Western and Network Rail were jointly investing in improvements to the problematic Reading area. He said: "We are also investing £750 million in track improvements which will reduce First Great Western's delays."

WAGON REVIEW

HTA 100T Coal Hopper Wagon

The HTA 100T coal hopper wagon is a new generation of ‘Merry-Go-Round’ hopper wagons for use at power stations. They were built by Thrall between 2001-2004 and were designed to replace the now ageing and smaller HAA hoppers. They were built with central draw gear and without buffers although mounting holes were provided. In fact some have now had buffers added, so they can be placed at the end of the rake so other locos could be used instead of Class 66’s. They are also fitted with a twin air pipe system to aid faster braking responses. The HTA wagons are solely in use by EWS as the other freight companies use other bulk wagons. A total of 1161 were built, of which only a handful have been withdrawn. Running numbers are 310000-311161, which were added later to the top left of each wagon in addition to the lower position just above the sole bar, which is often obscured by fifth or graffiti, as can be seen in the lower photo (the slab sides are a convenient canvas). The two photos show opposite sides and the differing below sole bar arrangements.

The following information covers the period 1st to 31th May 2007.

Belgium The Liege Banker on Wednesday the 2nd May was 2229, with 2248 being used as standby. Noted in action at Brussels during the morning were (as seen) 2021 on EC91 the 07:00 Brussels Midi to Basel, 1353+ CFL3005 ‘dead in train’ leading IC2127 the 04:46 Arlon to Brussels Midi, 2613 heading P7100 the 07:00 Nivelles to Mechelen, 2359 powering P7514 the 06:58 Tournai to Schaarbeek, 2360 hauling P7074 the 07:26 Aalst to Brussels Midi, 2001 with P7405 the 06:48 Huy to Brussels Midi, 2316 on P7010 the 07:17 St Niklaas to Schaarbeek and 2613 topping P7258 the 08:23 Mechelen to Brussels Midi. 16 Use of SNCF’s CC6500 is becoming much less frequent. On the 2nd May, all remaining 6500’s were available for use, but none were allocated to work any trains. The day before 6558 was meant to do a Lyon to Modane turn bit in the end the train was worked by a 22200. Interesting action from the 4th May included 8602 at the head of the 11:48 Toulouse to Montpellier, 9325 powering the 12:27 Cerbere to Avignon, fret allocated 22368 powering the 16:10 Avignon to Port Bou, 9303 topping the 15:45 Cerbere to Avignon and 9330 working the 21:10 Avignon to Perpignan. Portugal A visit to the depot at Poceirão on the 1st found a very clean 1564 keeping company with disgraceful 1562, 1907 & 1911. The class 15XX are (apparently) based at Entron, but outbased at Poceirão, so it must have been home for a wash and brush up. Action from the 1st included 1945 powering IC598 the 06:50 Evora to Lisboa Oriente, 1947 on IC690 the 07:51 Lisboa Oriente to Evora and 1943 with IC590 the 08:26 Beja to Lisboa Oriente. There was a bit of ‘Moose’ action at Regua on the 10th with 1411/13/55 all seen. 1411 started on IR864, the 08:48 Regua to Campanha, worked IR867 the 11:20 Campanha to Regua then to Porto SB on IR878, the 17:02 ex Regua. Sadly any hopes of 1411 working back to Regua on IR961, the 19:20 ex Porto SB were dashed when 2626 arrived dragging a kart which went on to form the Douro service. Meanwhile 1413 spent all day at Regua stabled half in half out the preserved vehicles compound to the North of the station. 1455 arrived at Regua with IR873, the 15:20 from Campanha. I'm

17 assuming it went on to work IR875 the 17.22 Regua to Pocinho (a far assumption as IR962 the 19:03 Regua to Porto SB was formed of a kart). Also seen was 1446 which was working down branch towards Porto at Mosteiro with cement empties at 12:30. It was later noted paired with 1444 heading up the branch towards Godim at Livracao at 17:55. Finally on the 10th 9004 arrived at Regua mid afternoon towing a couple of vintage coaches off the Vila Real branch.

On the 18th May 1116062 (leased by GySEV) ran away from Tarvisio and flew off a bridge at 145 km/h near Villach, ending up in a forest (it has since been sent to Linz for heavy repairs), apparently FS staff loose shunted the loco back from the DC section into the OBB wired bit, but they forgot to check whether there was 1042 002 4, Muezzuschlag Depot, Austria a driver on the loco, stupid, or what? 10 July 2005 Robert Brown
