Arsenal FC are back at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium, where they lost on matchday six 12 months ago, for Arsène Wenger's 150th UEFA Champions League match knowing even victory may not be enough to finish top of Group B. • A point behind FC Schalke 04 and with the head-to-head record favouring the German side, Arsenal must win and hope Schalke drop points at Montpellier Hérault SC. A 2-0 victory at home to the French team on matchday five guaranteed Arsenal's campaign would for a 13th successive season carry on into the new year. • On the same night, Olympiacos seemed to be edging towards the point in Gelsenkirchen that would keep alive their qualifying hopes, only for a 77th-minute Christian Fuchs goal to ensure the Greek champions will finish third and move into the UEFA Europa League round of 32. • In their matchday two meeting, Arsenal went in front through Gervinho and, though headed the equaliser, second-half goals from Lukas Podolski and substitute Aaron Ramsey gave Arsenal the points. • Wenger has won 68 of his 149 UEFA Champions League matches as a coach, drawing 39 and losing 42. Only Sir Alex Ferguson has overseen more games in the competition (187). Previous meetings • The teams are in the same UEFA Champions League group for the third time in four seasons, and each of the previous five fixtures has been won by the home side. A year ago Olympiacos took a 2-0 lead through and David Fuster and although Yossi Benayoun pulled one back, François Modesto made the final score 3-1. • The lineups on 6 December 2011 were: Olympiacos: Megyeri, Maniatis, Modesto, Mellberg, Djebbour (Papazoglou 90), Mirallas, Fuster (Abdoun 64), Holebas (Orbaiz 37), Papadopoulos, Marcano, Torossidis. Arsenal: Fabiański (Mannone 25), Vermaelen, André Santos (Miquel 51), Oxlade-Chamberlain, Squillaci, Djourou, Arshavin, Frimpong, Chamakh, Benayoun, Coquelin (Rosický 67). • Olympiacos also came out on top in the 2009/10 fixture in Piraeus, another matchday six contest, winning 1-0 through Leonardo's goal. In both cases Arsenal won the reverse fixtures, 2-1 and 2-0. Match background • In their 14th UEFA Champions League campaign, Olympiacos have failed to match their feats of both 2009/10 and 2007/08 when they reached the round of 16. • Arsenal, involved in the group stage for the 15th campaign in a row, have qualified for the last 16 for the 13th time in succession and are now aiming for a ninth group victory in that time. In 2011/12 Wenger's side departed in the round of 16 for the second season running. • The matchday one win at Montpellier was only Arsenal's third in their last 14 away matches in the competition proper, a run that includes eight defeats. Team ties • Bacary Sagna and Rafik Djebbour were team-mates at AJ Auxerre from 2000 to 2003, Abou Diaby joining them in 2002. Sébastien Squillaci and Modesto were team-mates at AS Monaco FC from 2004 to 2006. • and played together at Villarreal CF from 2008 until 2010. David Fuster joined them in 2009/10 after a one-season loan at Elche CF. • Roy Carroll was on the winning side in Manchester United FC's 2003/04 FA Cup semi-final against the Gunners but lost in the following season's final, with Arsenal winning 5-4 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes. That was his last game for United and the last trophy Arsenal won. • Marouane Chamakh scored FC Girondins de Bordeaux's winner in a 2-1 second-leg defeat of Olympiacos in 2009/10 UEFA Champions League round of 16. • Per Mertesacker's SV Werder Bremen lost 3-1 at home to Olympiacos on 3 October 2007, their first away win in the UEFA Champions League at the 32nd attempt. Vassilis Torossidis played for the visitors, whose third goal was scored by Darko Kovačević, now the club's technical director. • Wenger's Monaco lost 2-1 on aggregate to Olympiacos in the 1992/93 European Cup Winners' Cup second round. • Wojciech Szczęsny was sent off for co-hosts Poland in the 69th minute of UEFA EURO 2012's opening match against . , Torossidis and José Holebas all featured for Greece in a 1-1 draw.

Olympiacos FC: Leonardo Jardim Date of birth: 1 August 1974 Nationality: Portuguese Coaching career: AD Camacha, GD Chaves, SC Beira-Mar, SC Braga, Olympiacos FC • Played football at an amateur level during his youth and despite taking a passing interest in handball, it was always Jardim's intention to become a coach. As a result he studied physical education at the University of Madeira, and at 24 became the youngest Portuguese coach to obtain a UEFA A licence. • Three years later, in 2001, appointed assistant coach at Madeiran club Camacha, where he impressed sufficiently to take charge of first-team duties two years later. Left to join Chaves midway through 2007/08, masterminding rise to the second division 18 months later. • Also won promotion at Beira-Mar after taking charge in summer 2009 and preserved their top-flight status the following season before stepping down. • Signed a three-year contract when he succeeded Domingos Paciência at Braga in 2011 but left after only one having guided the club to a third-placed finish, helped by a record-breaking 13 successive league wins at the turn of the year, and into the UEFA Europa League round of 16. • Confirmed as the new coach of Olympiacos in June 2012, putting pen to paper on a two-year contract, to become the fourth former Braga coach to work in Greece, after Carlos Carvalhal (Asteras Tripolis FC), Jesualdo Ferreira (Panathinaikos FC) and Manuel Machado (Aris Thessaloniki FC).

Arsenal FC: Arsène Wenger Date of birth: 22 October 1949 Nationality: French Playing career: AS Mutzig, FC Mulhouse, AS Vauban, RC Strasbourg Coaching career: RC Strasbourg (assistant coach), AS Cannes (assistant coach), AS Nancy-Lorraine, AS Monaco FC, Nagoya Grampus Eight, Arsenal FC • Not the most successful of players, Arsène Wenger has more than made up for that as a coach, turning Arsenal into one of Europe's top teams. • Born in Strasbourg, Wenger worked at Strasbourg and Cannes before Nancy-Lorraine offered him his big break. He impressed sufficiently to be offered the job as coach of Monaco in 1987. • Within a year Monaco scooped the French title and Wenger the Coach of the Year award. He led the side to 1991 French Cup glory, then the 1992 European Cup Winners' Cup final where they lost to SV Werder Bremen. After reportedly turning down France and FC Bayern München, he moved on to Japan and enjoyed huge success with Grampus Eight. • Appointed by Arsenal in September 1996, Wenger became the first non-Briton to win the Premier League in 1998, adding the first of four FA Cup triumphs. The Gunners lost the 2000 UEFA Cup final to Galatasaray AŞ but claimed another double in 2002, and in 2003/04 played some thrilling attacking football en route to becoming the first team since 1889 to negotiate an English top-flight season unbeaten. • Wenger nearly topped all his achievements by taking Arsenal to the 2006 UEFA Champions League final, only for FC Barcelona to come from behind to win 2-1. Arsenal's move to their new stadium later that year was also instigated by Wenger.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Holders Chelsea FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC Bayern München's Mario Gomez on matchday eight last season. • Before this season Barcelona had finished as group winners on 13 occasions, one more than Manchester United and Real Madrid. • Barcelona hold the record for successive wins in the UEFA Champions League proper with nine, between 18 September 2002 and 18 February 2003. RSC Anderlecht's 12 straight defeats (10 December 2003 to 23 November 2005) is also a competition record. • Five teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid (2011/12). • Fifteen teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including Villarreal CF, FC Oţelul Galaţi and GNK Dinamo Zagreb in 2011/12. • Barcelona scored 20 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, equalling Manchester United's competition record from 1998/99. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage, a tally matched by Real Madrid last season. • Only RC Deportivo La Coruña (2004/05) and Maccabi Haifa FC (2009/10) have failed to score in a group stage. • Dinamo Zagreb conceded 22 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, a new record. The previous highest total was 19, shared by MŠK Žilina (2010/11), Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC (1995/96). • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that same season before Dynamo Kyiv managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, as did Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
