PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

• Waits and Lyotard
Nothing Like Maudlin [draft] But to resist is in itself a metamorphosis As if a quasi poetic fact affirmed itself In and of nothing With the indubitable certainty that this nothing The humiliated Exists. (CS, 67 [modified]) Resistance and significance Jean-François Lyotard’s last two works, Chambre sourde [CS] and La Confession d’ Augustin [CA], add to the significance of his work as perhaps the most searing, but also most subtle form of resistance in recent philosophy. Except it is nothing like organised resistance and significance is a betrayal. The effect of the books is closer to a sudden squall than to a plod against a prevailing wind. They do not enlist us into a good fight against some tangible enemy. Not since his writings on Algeria, and maybe not even there, has he sought to go head to head with some eliminable foe, as if the fight could be won. That kind of philosophical naivety serves only to re-enforce 1 what he calls deathly eternal repetition, ` l’éternelle redite ’. The secret, his secret, is to continue to live intensely, hidden in the choking glue and re-used debris that give consistency to our necessary commonwealths. He leaves the refinement of the visible structure to other thinkers. Free of the now banal and always paranoid - power-crazed - concern to define and justify their activity as philosophy, Lyotard’s last books refine the practice of dissimulation, the art of secret loves and invisible passions from Libidinal Economy . They do so through the study of material vibration: `An immaterialist materialism, if it is true that matter is energy and mind, is contained vibration’ (Lyotard 1988, 45).

  • Lowside of the Road: a Life of Tom Waits Free
FREE LOWSIDE OF THE ROAD: A LIFE OF TOM WAITS PDF Barney Hoskyns | 640 pages | 12 Oct 2010 | FABER & FABER | 9780571235537 | English | London, United Kingdom Lowside of the Road: A life of Tom Waits | The Independent T om Waits is an intriguing subject for a biography. Also a reluctant one, as Barney Hoskyns discovered to his cost when writing this book. Never mind getting an interview with Waits himself. Even the author's requests to speak to friends and colleagues of Waits were blanked by almost everyone who still had any contact with this remarkable but shadowy performer. The stonewalling, which was clearly orchestrated by Waits and his wife Kathleen Brennan, reached such a pitch that Hoskyns eventually found himself questioning his own right to proceed with this book about the singer, songwriter and part-time actor whom he believes to be "as important an American artist as anyone the twentieth century had produced". Hoskyns is not one of those writers who goes looking for a fight. Quite the reverse. He is a diligent, Lowside of the Road: A Life of Tom Waits weaver of historical narrative and a confirmed footnote addict. The very first sentence in the book ends with one of those pesky asterisks directing you to the bottom of the page, and there are long stretches where the flow of the narrative is subject to interruption by a steady stream of Lowside of the Road: A Life of Tom Waits, interjections and afterthoughts. But above all Hoskyns is a music fan, Lowside of the Road: A Life of Tom Waits like so many other professional taste-makers has found himself beguiled for many years by the Waits voodoo.
