    BEATS OF YOUR TOWN On the eve of the release of their new album ‘Ocean’s Apart’, Grant McLennan, co-leader of watershed Brisbane pop group, The Go-Betweens, takes the time to grant Robiter an interview. Matthew ‘The Rock Lobbster’ Lobb reports The Clowns Come To Town – Film School Rejections and UQ Librarians Long before Queensland art tangled at a pretty summit with pop music (the years prior to LP wonderworks such as Before Hollywood, Liberty Belle And The Black Diamond Express and 16 Lovers Lane) , one Grant McLennan had been knocked back from film and television school on account of his 16 years. Enrolment in an arts program at the University of Queensland came, therefore, as a sort of edifying compromise. Once at St. Lucia, the undergraduate - a brainy eldest child from rural Queensland - befriended a gracefully mincing eccentric named Robert Forster who played guitar and wrote his own songs. The two bonded over shared tastes in skewered pop culture and spent a lot of time at the Humanities library reading, in import copies of The Village Voice, about emerging bands like Television and Talking Heads.     Renaissance – DeLane Lea Studios 1973 (51:16, CD, Purple Pyramid Records, 1973 / 2015) Ursprünglich handelte es sich bei den hier auf CD veröffentlichten Aufnahmen von Renaissance um einen Radiomitschnitt, der bereits in der Vergangenheit mehrfach als Bootleg kursierte. Inwieweit das in Los Angeles ansässige Reissue Label Purple Pyramid Records (veröffentliche in der Vergangenheit u.a. Nektar, Greenslade, Amon Düül II) nun der rechtmäßige Besitzer der Aufnahmen ist, bleibt etwas im Dunkeln. Zwar findet sich auf der Renaissance-Webseite bisher kein Hinweis auf diesen Tonträger, andererseits kann man aber über diverse Internetkanäle das Album ganz offiziell erwerben und es ist auch eine weitere Liveaufnahme „Academy Of Music“ von der ’74er Tour angekündigt. Vielleicht wurde auch ganz einfach die Gunst der Stunde genutzt, um im Rahmen der anstehenden Live-Aktivitäten der Band etwas Geld – von wem und für wenn auch immer – in die Kassen zu spülen. Genug der Mutmaßungen, ab zur Musik. Dieser Live-Mitschnitt entstand 1973 in den DeLane Lea Studios in London, einer Lokation, in der die Band bereits im gleichen Jahr das damals aktuelle Album „Ashes Are Burning“ aufnahm, welches aber auch von Künstlern wie The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Queen oder Pink Floyd genutzt wurde. Da man sich aus verschiedenen Gründen dagegen entschied auf Tour zu gehen (u.a. wg. der damalige Ölkrise), lud man kurzerhand die nächsten Freude ein und spielte einfach einen knapp 51-minütigen Gig Live im Studio, welcher auch bei der BBC gesendet wurde.     Paradise Lost – Live at Rockpalast 1995 (62:27, CD+DVD, MiG-Music, 2019) Beim Rockpalast handelt es sich um eine Fernsehsendung des Westdeutschen Rundfunks, welche mit Unterbrechungen seit 1974 existiert. Im Rahmen des Formates wurden in der Vergangenheit auch immer wieder Festivals produziert, um später die Auftritte der verschiedenen Bands im Fernsehen zu übertragen. Der Titel „Live at Rockpalast 1995“ für dieses Album ist daher erst einmal ein wenig irreführend, da es sich bei vorliegendem Ton- und Bilddokument um den Auftritt von Paradise Lost beim Bizarre Festival 1995 handelt. Das Bizarre existierte zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon seit acht Jahren und war gerade auf dem Weg, sich zu Deutschlands Festival Nummer Eins für alternative Musik jeglicher Couleur zu mausern. Bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt waren u.a. so namhafte Bands wie Siouxsie and the Banshees, New Model Army, Iggy Pop, Einstürzende Neubauten, Ramones, The Pogues, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Bad Religion, Die Ärzte und Biohazard beim Bizarre Festival aufgetreten. Dabei hatte das Festival über die Jahre hinweg immer wieder seinen Veranstaltungsort gewechselt. Nach mehreren Gastspielen in Berlin und auf dem Loreleyfelsen in Sankt Goarshausen sowie Gastspielen in Gießen und Alsfeld, fand das Bizarre 1994 zum ersten Mal in Köln statt. 1995 kehrten die Veranstalter in die Domstadt zurück. Allerdings wählten sie dieses Mal nicht den Kölner Jugendpark als Location, sondern stattdessen einen staubigen und herzlosen Deutzer Parkplatz namens P23 – jenen Ort, an dem schon im Folgejahr mit dem Beginn der Kölnarena (heute Lanxess Arena) begonnen werden sollte. Paradise Lost waren 1995 im Zenit ihres Erfolges angekommen. Die Band aus dem englischen Halifax war Anfang der 90er neben Anathema und My Dying Bride zu den „Big Three“ des Gothic Metal gerechnet worden.
