From the first sight of the giant green-and-gold bow on Jennifer Lopez’s Valentino ball gown to the fans in the bleachers screaming when Brad Pitt ran into Leonardo DiCaprio, the 77th Golden Globes got off to a glitzy — and very loud — start. Not lost in the excitement was the Australian bush fires. “There’s enormous strength in the country right now in terms of camaraderie and helping each other,” Nicole Kidman told Variety. The telecast began with host Ricky Gervais hurling some of his trademark zingers, but they were soon forgotten: Winners like Patricia Arquette and Michelle Williams received some of the biggest applause of the night when they delivered impassioned calls to get out the vote. HOLY STAR, BATMAN! Burt Ward reflects on the path to his storied role as Robin, the Boy Wonder

BY SCOTT HUVER

BATMAN’S CRIME-FIGHTING SIDEKICK ROBIN WAS famously excitable, with all his “Holy” fill-in-the-blank exclamations during the three-season run of the enduringly popular 1960s “Batman” series. But actor Burt Ward learned early on to take the inevitable highs and lows of showbiz career in stride — and that includes a decades-long wait for a star on the Holly- wood Walk of Fame. “It’s only been 50 years, and I am a patient person,” chuckles Ward, 74, who’ll receive the honor on Jan. 9, in a spot adjacent to the star of his late co-star Adam West. But it’s actually been longer than that: Ward made his performing debut at age 2 as the world’s youngest professional ice skater in his father’s traveling ice show, a precursor to the Ice Capades. Then known as Bert Gervis Jr., Ward recalls regularly surprising the audi- ence when while being escorted onto the ice he’d begin to skate on his own. “People were really stunned to see that,” he says. “There are not too many people that can skate at that age.” After his father sold the ice show and moved the family to Beverly Hills, Ward grew up comfortably ensconced in the industry-centric environs. He remem- bers one early acting coach praising his work ethic, but also pointing out “unlike everybody else, if you don’t succeed, it’s not going to bother you — you just don’t have that ‘I’ve-got-to-do-it’ thing.” Ward admits he “worked really hard” but also “just had fun. 60 | VARIETY.COM | JANUARY 8, 2020 FOCUS PRODUCTION FORUM

This sort of broad-view approach marks an ambitious step forward for the event, which initially launched in 2011 out of sheer opportunity: Because onsite production tends grind to a halt every dark and dreary January, expo organizers sought to capitalize on the annual lull in order to showcase Paris-based locations to local producers in between shoots. “It started as very regional, then it become very national,” says Film Paris Region executive director Remi Bergues, who is overseeing this year’s event. “And now we want it to be more international.” And so alongside the new moniker comes a fresh oper- ational mandate — to promote the full scope of the French production community to the global industry. “Generally, international productions only come here to shoot one or two scenes,” says Bergues. “Very often, inter- national producers only think of France for its locations and not for its talent and service providers, whereas we have a very strong [production infrastructure]. We want to showcase the full supply chain and show that we can help every step of the way.” This year’s change in name and location is in many ways a product of that ambition. For the first time, the Produc- tion Forum will take place under the same roof as the cine- matography-focused trade show Micro Salon and a series of financing conferences organized by the government audio- visual organization the CNC and Film France. “We decided to combine our visitors in order to make the experience more valuable for them,” Bergues explains. “That way, they can get many different aspects of what they need at the same time, and at the same place.” Of course, it’s also a response to larger industry trends. As global OTT services push to gain — and subsequently keep — footholds in European countries, they’ll do so in part by upping domestic series production within those various markets. But if those streamers stand ready to up their invest- ments, they do require a certain level of scale. “The OTT platforms coming to Europe need soundstages to actu- ally be able to industrialize production,” Bergues says. “[Whereas traditionally we] use less soundstages than other countries, and so we were probably less equipped. But the market is changing.” FORUM DRAWS Indeed, the Production Forum will put a major empha- sis on the myriad construction projects popping up all over the Ile-de-France region. Bergues is quick to mention the GLOBAL PICTURE TSF Backlot 217, a large outdoor production facility in for- mer airbase 20 miles south of Paris. “There, nine sound- Paris event reaches international production stages will be built in the next 24 months,” he says. “They community with ambitious focus will be completely eco-conceived, and completely sustain- able… [And] they will be large-scale, big enough for the BY BEN CROLL American platforms to use.” Alongside programs dedicated to diversity and the pro- motion of emerging voices, the topic of sustainability will be another significant focus, with a number of green shooting round-tables and conferences planned. For one thing, it seems that in the universe of “Deputy,” lawyers or judges being involved in the legal process is ... bad; all justice should be meted out by cops whom Hollister exhorts as “ass-kickers.” There is an audience for a show like this. In a sense, it’s review-proof, because a negative verdict will only cement the perception among the intended viewer- ship that a certain segment of the coun- try just doesn’t get it. But there is some- thing about watching Stephen Dorff relentlessly gas up rooms full of police officers to be more aggressive, less inhib- ited — coming as it does after years of disturbing examples of police officers using excessive force and worse against people of color — that left me uneasy. (Dorff’s casting here is hardly the head- line, but exists balefully in the shadow of his excellent performance in the third season of “True Detective,” a set of epi- sodes with much to say about justice as meted out by the police.) FINAL CUT

1951 Long before the push for diversity and inclusion, Hollywood had a few Latin/Hispanic stars who made a big impact. One was Katy Jurado, the first Latina actress to win a Golden Globe (for ‘High Noon’ 1952’s “High Noon”) and the first nominated for an Oscar (1954’s “Broken Lance”). She was born Jan. 16, 1924, in Mexico, and began making films as a teenager. Though she was originally cast Was a Golden as spitfires or vamps, her roles got better and she added intelligence and subtlety to her charac- ters. Variety reviewed her in her 1951 “Bullfighter and the Lady,” saying she “makes a very strong VARIETY.COM Hour for Katy impression” in her Hollywood debut. She won three Ariel Awards, the highest honor for Mexican Jurado — and filmmaking, including one for Luis Buñuel’s 1953 “El Bruto”; in 1997, she added a Special Golden Ariel for lifetime achievement. Painted by Diego Rivera and romanced by novelist Louis L’Amour, for Diversity Jurado remained the only Mexican actress to be Oscar nominated for nearly 50 years, until
