The study provided information on the species level-diversity, status and similarity of butterfly species composition in 4 selected Key Biodiversity areas of Mindanao at the eminent climate change. Data can be used for species monitoring, distribution, biogeography and conservation of butterflies in Mindanao, Philippines as climate change progresses. Belt transect, time constraint and transect walk sampling were employed in the study from February 121 Asian Journal of Biodiversity 2010 to April 2011. We captured a total of 247 identified butterfly species. Species diversity level using Shannon-Weiner index showed fair level in most of the sampling sites. Highest species richness was observed in Mt. Kitanglad H’1.959 (148 species), followed by Mt. Apo H’=1.755 (104 species), Mt. Timpoong H’=1.579 (79 species) lowest in Mt. Musuan H’=.

Such an annotated checklist should hopefully be useful for future research into the butterflies of Bangladesh, which are very poorly known, for reasons discussed below. When my wife was posted to Bangladesh in March 2001 we had expected to stay for four years, but she was transferred to Hanoi in March 2003. I had hoped to develop a book on the butterflies of Bangladesh, but now this checklist appears the best compromise in order not to lose the information that I did manage to gather. The checklist is clearly incomplete but it must be the most detailed inventory of any large invertebrate group in the country, and it updates the taxonomy and nomenclature which in some Indian and local publications still largely revolve around that in the excellent book by Evans (1932), which is now very dated. Objectives The objectives of the study are: • To list of all butterflies known to occur in Bangladesh. • To add to this list adding those species that on ecological and biogeographical grounds must be – or at least have been – in Bangladesh. • To update the taxonomy and nomenclature of the Bangladesh butterflies, including the authorship, date, and type locality for all species and subspecies.

Based on 105 months of studies over 49 years, we reviewed the status of 915 species and 910 subspecies of butterflies known in the Philippines. We identified 133 globally threatened and conservation-dependent endemic Philippine taxa. The current system of 18 priority protected areas provides at least one protected area for 65 of these but no areas for 29 species and 39 subspecies. Of the 133 taxa, 71% do not have a stable population inside a priority site. A total of 29 taxa is endangered or critically endangered; 83% of these do not occur within a priority site. Least protected are the lowland taxa. The minimum network required to include each threatened and conservation-dependent taxon of butterfly within at least one area would comprise 29 sites. The Sulus and Mindanao hold disproportionate numbers of threatened butterflies. Our findings suggest limited cross-taxon congruence in complementarity-derived priority sets. A large proportion of the priority areas for Philippine butterflies do not coincide with known priority areas for mammals and birds.
