Middle East May 11, 2006 Suez ripples half century after crisis By Ronan Thomas An outspoken, youthful Middle Eastern leader takes on powerful Western adversaries seeking to isolate him. Grasping the mantle of national and regional power, his gamble is stunningly successful, but brief. Strategic calculation leads Western powers and their ally Israel to use military power in response. The result: shambles, recrimination, political downfall, imperial eclipse, and an entirely altered regional complexion. July marks the half-century since the 1956 Suez Crisis and Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser's resistance to the West. In 1956, Nasser, putative figurehead for Arab nationalism, seized and nationalized the Suez Canal, the Middle East's vital shipping artery. His ambition: to shake off British and French control of Egyptian assets at a time when both powers were entering an imperial endgame. Egyptian and pan-Arab euphoria was followed by swift naval, airborne and land assaults by Britain, France and (after secret negotiation) Israel. Egyptian military defeat was inevitable, but Western success illusory. The events of the crisis bear retelling, 50 years on, and not just for the historically minded, for parallels with today's Iran imbroglio are emerging. Most of the actors of 1956 are intimately involved. In 2006 another regional protagonist, Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad, has voiced Nasser-style defiance toward Western powers and Israel. Iran now appears set on nuclear power amid international opprobrium. It remains unclear whether development of Iranian nuclear weapons may be next. The row - exacerbated in recent months by Ahmadinejad's colorful outbursts - has now moved to New York. -

America’s Reversed Policy toward the Muslim Brotherhood By Amin Makram Ebeid merica used to be acknowledged as a beacon of democracy, a defender of values, a bridge-builder between A people and nations, and an example for the entire world to emulate. In the Middle East, this image of America is unfortunately quickly losing its place in the hearts of democracy lovers and peace makers of this tortured region. In early 2011, political observers noted that the Obama administration had begun to reverse decades of mistrust and hostility towards the Muslim Brotherhood (MB). This reversal was carried out with full knowledge that Brethren policy calls for the imposition of the Islamic Shari’a on Christians and liberal Muslims who reject this policy as tyrannical. Their organizational creed says it all: “Allah is our objective, the Qur’an is our law, the Prophet is our leader, Jihad is our way and death for the sake of Allah is the highest aspiration”. Even the MB emblem appears to encourage military Jihad, consisting of two swords and the Qur’an. This would probably be acceptable in a homogeneous Muslim Society like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), but it is certainly not the case in Egypt, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. EGYPT 2014 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Executive Summary The 2014 constitution describes freedom of belief as “absolute” and provides adherents of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism the right to practice their religion freely and to build houses of worship. However, the government does not recognize conversion from Islam to any other religion. The constitution specifies Islam as the state religion and the principles of sharia as the primary source of legislation. It also provides for the establishment of an anti-discrimination commission and requires parliament to pass a new law facilitating the construction and renovation of Christian churches. The government prosecuted individuals for “defaming religion” under the penal code, and individuals accused of blasphemy often faced social intolerance and, in some cases, violence. Police and security officials reportedly failed to respond in cases of kidnapping and extortion of Christians in Upper Egypt. The June 30 Fact-Finding Committee, which was established by presidential decree in 2013 to investigate the post-June 2013 violence, released in November the executive summary of its report and ascribed responsibility for the attacks on churches to members of the Muslim Brotherhood. President Sisi met with the leaders of the country’s major Christian groups to discuss their concerns. Accountability for previous sectarian crimes was uneven, and government officials and community leaders continued to sponsor reconciliation sessions – extrajudicial resolutions of sectarian conflict – which human rights advocates and some Christian groups regarded as largely unfair. In an effort to prevent speech in mosques promoting sectarianism or inciting violence, the government enacted a new law mandating stricter penalties for imams preaching in mosques without a license, and published weekly instructions for imams regarding the acceptable content of their sermons. -

Unauthorized reproduction prohibited Introduction There is a trend among Chinese companies toward direct foreign investment (FDI) that is becoming more active each year. China’s 2013 FDI (net, flow) announced in September 2014 set a new record, at USD107, 843.71 million, a 22.8% increase year-on-year. By region, Chinese FDI in Asia and Central and South America drove the increase, while FDI in Europe declined. By industry, mining and finance stood out as contributing to the increase, while manufacturing made a negative contribution. In light of these circumstances, this report presents multifaceted verification of the situation in regions of China with regard to Chinese FDI and the situation in the countries and regions that receive FDI, and it describes the current state of overseas development by Chinese companies, which are expanding around the world. This report appeared in JETRO Daily in November and December 2014, and it is based on the data available at the time of writing (September-October 2014).It is hoped that this report will serve as a reference in various quarters, including at Japanese companies.
