  • Monitoring the Peace? : Northern Ireland's 1975 Ceasefire Incident Centres and the Politicisation of Sinn Féin
Dr Tony Craig March 2013 [email protected] Monitoring the Peace? : Northern Ireland’s 1975 ceasefire incident centres and the politicisation of Sinn Féin. During the Provisional IRA’s (PIRA) 1975 ceasefire, two different sets of incident centres were established across Northern Ireland in order to monitor and avert escalation of violence between Republicans and Security Forces. While one group of these offices were run by the Northern Ireland Office (NIO) and administered by clerks in the Northern Ireland Civil Service, very quickly Sinn Féin (taking advantage of their decriminalisation in 1974) established their own incident centres to coordinate their communication with the government. This article argues that the establishment of the Sinn Féin incident centres set a precedent for the future political activity of the Provisional Republican Movement; that their activity during the 1975 ceasefire played an important formative role in the evolution of the group’s political strategy; and that this experience, acquired from the work done during the 1975 truce, was of far greater influence than is appreciated in current accounts. The period surrounding the PIRA’s 1975 ceasefire has recently become the site of a large amount of new research due in equal measure to the availability of new archive resources1 as well as the rich comparisons that can be drawn between this failed ceasefire and the PIRA’s later attempts in 1994 and 1996.2 The emphasis of the new studies has often been to look in detail at the talks between the British Government

  • Who Will Go with Fergus Now? the Tain Revisioned As the Crying Game
Who Will Go with Fergus Now? The Tain Revisioned as The Crying Game Jody Malcolm Neil Jordan's 1992 film The Crying Game (TCG)has received much attention from gender and race theorists, but his use of Irish myth as the foundation for his transformative vision of personal, cultural, and national identity has received very little. While gender and race approaches to this film have been beneficial and enlightening, when we read Jordan's narrative within the context of Irish myth, we find the predecessors of his major characters, the tales that prefigure their behaviors, and the legacies that Jordan wishes to subvert. As Richard Kearney has noted, myth can be liberating, or it can be incarcerating ([1985]1986:79),and when we examine the myths that have been propagated to sanction violence and bloodshed in Irish culture, it is evident that new myths, or new readings of the old ones, must be created that will allow for a greater expansion of Irish consciousness. I assert that in TCG, Jordan examines the mythic icons of Irish tradition, finds their received meanings lacking in regenerative potential, and posits an alternative perspective-one which, while working within the framework of Irish mythology, de-romanticizes the violence of the past. The pivotal figure in Jordan's film is Fergus, who shuns the tragic violence of the Cuchulainesque Peter and the Maevish Jude. Each of these characters has predecessors in Irish mythology's oldest tale-the Tain Bo Cuailnge. In the Tain Cuchulain and Medb are committed to war and battle while Fergus is the lover, the mediator, and the storyteller, all qualities which ensure the survival of his race and its culture.

[CRISIS] JPSMUN 2015-2016 JPSMUN Sai Ganagoni President Aneesh Deshpande 1st Vice President Neehar Mahidadia Treasurer Vishesh Sharma Corresponding Secretary Roshan Shelley Recording Secretary [CRISIS] Page 1 [CRISIS] JPSMUN 2015-2016 Dear Delegates, I am pleased to welcome you to this year’s Annual Fall JPSMUN conference! Hours of preparation, planning, and organizing have gone into the making of this conference. Our JPSMUN staffers have worked tirelessly to ensure the best conference experience for all of you. Every year, JPSMUN seeks to expand on the previous conferences we’ve hosted to constantly improve and strive for excellence. With six committees, and for the first time ever a joint pseudo-crisis committee, I hope that all of you can find something you enjoy. Our staffers are eager to host all of you for a Saturday filled with debate, diplomacy, and compromise. JPSMUN is one of the premier Model United Nations team on the East Coast and is proud to have such a distinct and decorated legacy. With a history that spans over two decades, JPSMUN is one of the oldest and largest high-school conferences. From the microcosm of Edison, our delegates have developed a worldly perspective through discussions of international affairs. Model United Nations is a medium for people who share the interest of global issues and debating to express their thoughts in hopes of gaining new insight. As delegates, we not only learn from the topics that we research, but from each other as we compete to become the best that we can be. The reason I love Model United Nations is because it allows people to learn things about themselves as they experiment with different techniques.

  • Chapter 6 a Time to Think, a Time to Talk Irish Republican Prisoners in the Northern Irish Peace Process John F. Morrison
Chapter 6 A Time to Think, A Time to Talk Irish Republican Prisoners in the Northern Irish Peace Process John F. Morrison Introduction The mid 1970s and early 1980s in Northern Ireland are rightly remembered as being among the most violent years of the Troubles. Perhaps paradoxically this chapter will argue that this period should also be considered as the beginning of the Republican Movement’s gradual advance towards the acceptance of peaceful politics. At the dawn of the Troubles, in the early 1970s, the Irish Republican Movement, most notably the newly established Provisional IRA, was experiencing an influx of new young recruits. Many of this young membership, as well as those who joined in the late 1960s, would go on to play a significant role in shaping the course of Irish Republicanism. It was under their leadership that the Provisional IRA took part in a sustained and brutal terrorist campaign during the Troubles. However, it is also under this leadership that the majority of the Irish Republican Movement eventually accepted the necessity for peaceful politics in the place of armed force. This politicisation was only made possible by an extended process of internal debate at both leadership and rank and file levels. One of the most prominent forums for this strategic debate was within the Republican prison populations. The purpose of this chapter is to look at the role prison – as a forum - played in the gradual acceptance of peaceful politics by the majority of those within the Irish Republican Movement. It will assess the central role which the debates within the prisons played in the gradual dismantling of the traditional abstentionist policy,1 and the eventual cessation of sustained paramilitary violence.

This dissertation compares two cases of intra-rebel war that pose an especially difficult puzzle for existing theories of intra-rebel war: the fighting between the Official IRA and the Provisional IRA in Belfast (1969-1980) and war among Kurdish revolutionaries in Turkey (1974-1980). These two cases are puzzling because both occurred in areas where the state was strong, and therefore able to capitalize operationally and politically on rebel fratricide. By comparing these two cases, this dissertation argues that broadly similar causal mechanisms can help to explain these intra-rebel wars. In both cases, rebel organizations were shaped by their involvement in defensive violence in response to repression from the state and state-aligned attackers. Learning to counteract this violence changed the operational and cultural character of these organizations, with downstream effects on how these organizations strategically appraised the costs and benefits of using violence against rivals.
