Abstract Visual and Material Culture at Hōkyōji Imperial Convent: The Significance of “Women’s Art” in Early Modern Japan by Sharon Mitsuko Yamamoto Doctor of Philosophy in History of Art University of California, Berkeley Professor Gregory Levine, Chair This dissertation focuses on the visual and material culture of Hōkyōji Imperial Buddhist Convent (Hōkyōji ama monzeki jiin) during the Edo period (1600-1868). Situated in Kyoto and in operation since the mid-fourteenth century, Hōkyōji has been the home for women from the highest echelons of society—the nobility and military aristocracy—since its foundation. The objects associated with women in the rarefied position of princess-nun offer an invaluable look into the role of visual and material culture in the lives of elite women in early modern Japan. Art associated with nuns reflects aristocratic upbringing, religious devotion, and individual expression. As such, it defies easy classification: court, convent, sacred, secular, elite, and female are shown to be inadequate labels to identify art associated with women. This study examines visual and material culture through the intersecting factors that inspired, affected, and defined the lives of princess-nuns, broadening the understanding of the significance of art associated with women in Japanese art history. -

Monastic Tradition and Lay Practice from the Perspective of Nantenb6 A Response of Japanese Zen Buddhism to Modernity MICHEL MOHR A !though the political transformations and conflicts that marked the Meiji ..fiRestoration have received much attention, there are still significant gaps in our knowledge of the evolution that affected Japanese Zen Buddhism dur ing the nineteenth century. Simultaneously, from a historical perspective, the current debate about the significance of modernity and modernization shows that the very idea of "modernity" implies often ideologically charged presup positions, which must be taken into account in our review of the Zen Buddhist milieu. Moreover, before we attempt to draw conclusions on the nature of modernization as a whole, it would seem imperative to survey a wider field, especially other religious movements. The purpose of this paper is to provide selected samples of the thought of a Meiji Zen Buddhist leader and to analyze them in terms of the evolution of the Rinzai school from the Tokugawa period to the present. I shall first situ ate Nantenb6 lff:Rtf by looking at his biography, and then examine a reform project he proposed in 1893. This is followed by a considerarion of the nationalist dimension of Nantenb6's thought and his view of lay practice. Owing to space limitations, this study is confined to the example provided by Nantenb6 and his acquaintances and disciples. I must specify that, at this stage, I do not pretend to present new information on this priest. I rely on the published sources, although a lot remains to be done at the level of fun damental research and the gathering of documents. -

Novice to Master Soko Morinaga (1925-95) The Prospect of My Own Death If I were to sum up the past forty years of my life, the time since I became a monk, I would have to say that it has been an ongoing lesson in the extent of my own stupidity. When I speak of my stupidity, I do not refer to something that is innate, but rather to the false impressions that I have cleverly stockpiled, layer upon layer, in my imagination. Whenever I travel to foreign countries to speak, I am invariably asked to focus on one central issue: Just what is satori, just what is enlightenment? This thing called satori, however, is a state that one can understand only through experience. It cannot be explained or grasped through words alone. By way of example, there is a proverb that says, “To have a child is to know the heart of a parent.” Regardless of how a parent may demonstrate the parental mind to a child, that child cannot completely understand it. Only when children become parents themselves do they fully know the heart of a parent. Such an understanding can be likened to enlightenment, although enlightenment is far deeper still. Because no words can truly convey the experience of enlightenment, in this book I will instead focus on the essentials of Zen training, on my own path to awakening. Let me start by saying that Zen training is not a matter of memorizing the wonderful words found in the sutras and in the records of ancient teachers. -

In the Rinzai Zen tradition, Joshu's "Mu" is considered that one koan. However, one koan has many aspects. Hakuin Zenji divided these aspects into five categories. Genuine insight is no other than the realization of zero ness of our being--that is sunyata [Hosshin--Dharmakaya, Category I]. One of the aspects of sunyata is to see the dynamic activity of Dharma [Kikan--Dynamism, Category II]. Still another aspect of sunyata is to appreciate the dialog through verbal expression [Gonsen--Verbal Expression, Catego~y III]. The other aspects of sunyata are so near, hence, easy to miss; consequently, difficult to pass [ Nanto--Diff icul t to Pass, Category IV]. The last categ-ory is Kojo--Endless Integration [Category V], which includes Goi, The Five Ranks and The Ten Precepts. Here I have selected about 100 koans but did not categorize them. I am planning to add about 10 more koans from The Transmission of the Lamp in the near future. Also, it is my intention to ask the students to present Jakugo, or "capping phrases," for selected koans. At any rate, I am convinced if these are thoroughly digested and looked into with genuine insight, one by one, we can cultivate the perspectives of our vistas. -

Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 1998 25/1-2 “A Lineage of Dullards” Zen Master Toju Reiso and His Associates Kato Shoshun This study concentrates on the relatively unknown Rinzai Mino line to illustrate the liveliness of Rinzai Zen practice in Meiji Japan. Even as struggles over the precepts and politics were being waged within the Zen denominations, some clerics attempted to carry on with their quest for awakening in relative isolation. Through a study of three monks, Toju Reiso, Tairyu Bun % and Seishu Shusetsu, strategies employed to preserve Rinzai Zen ^ spiritual legacy in the face of the turmoil of Meiji are high lighted. This article illustrates how these monks did their best to continue their eremetic existence and to pick up the pieces left by the widespread destruction of Buddhist temples and monasteries in early Meiji Japan. Among those familiar w ith Japanese Rinzai Zen it is a well-known fact that the lineage of Hakuin Ekaku 白 隱 慧 鶴 (1686-1769)— the lineage to which all contemporary Rinzai Zen masters belong— presently con sists of two branches, the Inzan 隠、山 branch and the Takuju 卓洲 branch. These were founded, respectively, by Inzan Ien 隱山惟琰 (1751-1814) and Takuju Kosen 卓 洲 胡 傳 (1760-1833),two of the fore most disciples of Hakuin,s immediate successor Gasan Jito 峨山慈棹 (1727-1797). SECURING OKINAWA FOR MISCEGENATION: A HISTORICAL AND LITERARY DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF AMERASIANS IN OKIANWA, 1945-2000 Annmaria Mitsuko Shimabuku, Ph. D. Cornell University 2010 Through an extensive collection of journalistic, archival, and literary materials, I illustrate the establishment, maintenance, and controversy surrounding miscegenation between U.S. military men and Okinawan women specifically from the standpoint of Amerasians that were born as a result thereof. As Okinawans were exposed to the raw violence of extraterritoriality of the U.S. military—most frequently expressed through the trope of sexual violence—an escape from that violence was quickly configured as a recuperation or increased protection of state sovereignty. In this way, journalists, politicians, and activists have frequently used mixed-blood children as the “evidence” in a juridical model to prove the “fact” of oppression. However, in a declension into biopolitics via three genealogists Nietzsche, Weber, and Foucault, I illustrate the assumptions implicit in this claim. The state is posited as a repressive institution that a political group known as “we” must resist. Here, metaphor is misconceived as the relationship between the state as an external force that exerts violence onto individual bodies that are in turn called to arms in the name of resistance. However, this rests on a causal understanding between the doer and the deed, or a political will that can be realized through sheer tenacity. -
Chan Buddhism in Ritual Context
CHAN BUDDHISM IN RITUAL CONTEXT The essays in this volume attempt to place the Chan and Zen traditions in their ritual and cultural contexts, looking at various aspects heretofore largely (and unduly) ignored. In particular, they show the extent to which these traditions, despite their claim to uniqueness, were indebted to larger trends in East Asian Buddhism, such as the cults of icons, relics and the monastic robe. The book emphasises the importance of ritual for a proper understanding of this allegedly anti-ritualistic form of Buddhism. In doing so, it deconstructs the Chan/Zen ‘rhetoric of immediacy’ and its ideological underpinnings.
