AIR TRAFFIC PERFORMANCE IN CAMEROON IN 2016 Elaborated after the exploitation of data collected at the airports, this edition of The Bulletin Statistiques of the CCAA presents the traffic of air transport activity in Cameroon during the year 2016. It gives an overall view of national and international commercial and non commercial traffic in terms of aircraft movements, passenger flows, freight and mail tons transported via Cameroon airports. FLIGHT MOVEMENTS During the year 2016 aircraft movements witnessed a drop of -4 % from a total of 27 504 movements, both landings and takeoffs, down to 26 461. For flight movements beyond the borders of Cameroon, this regression stood at -3%. However, as concerns regular commercial flights, traffic of flight takeoffs progressed by 5% rising from 10 533 departures in 2015 to 11 046 in 2016. Again, further analysis show that this progress is highly felt in terms of Regional and International flights (flights beyond CEMAC sub region) with a progress rate of 10% for aircraft takeoffs from the international airports of Douala and Yaounde-Nsimalen. The growth in international flight movement can be attributed to the intensification of operations by regular airlines like Ethiopian Airlines that has started serving the Yaounde-Nsimalen International airport (NSI). Whereas the regression observed in domestic flight movement can be due partially to the operational difficulties observed by CAMAIRCO, the lone regular operator at the national level and also to the rehabilitation works at the Douala international airport (DLA) that grounded flights for three weeks. This equally accounts for the sharp progress recorded at the level of NSI. 4 III. The growing trend observed in freight traffic is largely due to the activities of new entrant cargo carriers like Air Cargo Global that continue to intensify their activities in Cameroon and also due to the continuous amelioration in the compilation process of freight data, notably the inclusion of figures from DHL which were not available in 2015. 5 V. AIRPORT TRAFFIC It goes without saying that most of the air traffic in Cameroon is manifested at the Douala international airport which continues to grow as a m ajor hub in the central African sub region. As in the previous years, this airport recorded about 53% of international passenger flows to/from Cameroon. Nevertheless, while fr eight traffic developed a positive trend at this airport in 2016, both air craft movement and passenger flows stagnated at a rate of -19% respectively, compared to the figures of the previous year. This downward trend could partially be attributed to the temporal suspension of activities at the airport in March 2016 for rehabilitation of the runways. On the other hand Yaounde-Nsimalen international airport recorded tremendous growth in terms of aircraft movements (33%), passenger flows (64%) and freight transported (14%) respectively, compared to the previous year 2015 (see Table 2). The deviation of activities from the Douala international airport (DLA) for reasons above, the launching of regular flights to this airport by Ethiopian Airlines and the organization of the crowd pulling Women African Nations’ Cup in Cameroon accounted for this positive trend. As concerns share of passenger traffic per airport, DLA covers about 53% share of international passengers transported via Cameroon while NSI follows with about 47%. The figures of Maroua and Garoua remain largely negligible. For domestic traffic share, NSI tops the chart, covering 37% of national passenger flows, while DLA seconds with 25%, Maroua 22% and Garoua 16%, traffic at Bafoussam airport is gradually picking up. A greater proportion of traffic at Maroua and Garoua is linked to non regular commercial and non commercial flights such as military and humanitarian flights in connection with security threats posed by the BOKO HARAM insurgency at the northern parts of the country. 6 VI. PERFORMANCE OF AIR TRANSPORT COMPANIES About seventeen (17) regular commercial airlines operate international air transport services to and from Cameroon, in addition to five (5) non regular operators and cargo carriers like DHL, Air Cargo Global and Air Atlanta Icelandic. International air transport activity is largely dominated by the merger European companies that fly the Cameroon destination, with Air France topping the lead (about 20% of the market share), followed by Brussels Airlines and Turkish Airlines. Leading regional airlines such as Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Asky Airlines and Air Cote d’Ivoire continue to tighten their grip in the Cameroon air services market. The national flag bearer CAMAIRCO was plagued by operational difficulties but is expected to regain steam with the acquisition of new aircraft previewed under its restructuring plan with the government. Since the 1980s, we have witnessed two contradictory trends: on the one hand, coups, which have become rare events world-wide, have continued to proliferate in the region; concurrently, several African countries – such as Ghana, Uganda, Burkina Faso and Benin – have managed to escape from seemingly insurmountable coup-traps. What explains this divergence? To address these contradictory trends, I focus initially on Ghana and Cote d‟Ivoire, neighboring states, with comparable populations, topographies, and economies that have experienced contrasting trajectories. While Ghana suffered five consecutive coups from the 1966 to 1981, Cote d‟Ivoire was an oasis of stability and prosperity. The span of our life from birth to death and the Christian year from Christmas to Easter to Advent provide the most slowly developing rhythms. Week in and week out the pattern of the church’s Sunday worship provides another rhythm. This diary, on the other hand, is prepared to support the daily rhythm of our prayer; the heart-beat of faithful living. In our daily prayers we hold before our Heavenly Father the closest and most immediate concerns of life. In the Daily Prayer of Chester Cathedral this diary informs our intercessions set amidst the reading and singing of scripture. Here we weave together the cries of our hearts born out of our particular experience of life with the span of salvation history and the Good News of Jesus. We follow these pages, praying around God’s church in our diocese and our world-wide communion, as we begin and end every single day.     Blackburn Prayers September 2020 Since March we have seen unprecedented events taking place in our country and around the world in response to the coronavirus outbreak. A regular update for parishes continues to be sent from Bishop Philip and the Coronavirus Task Group; those updates are also available on the main coronavirus advice page where you will also find other useful information and links onwards to further guidance. In one of the earliest task group updates after lockdown Bishop Philip wrote that, above all, we must give ourselves at this time to the work of prayer. Several months on, prayer continues to be vital of course. That is why we are continuing to open with a special intention each day in Blackburn Prayers to help us to pray into the current crisis.
