In the socialist Revised 31. 7. 2014 era the town of Strážske located in the Košice Municipal Region was the centre of production of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) inter Accepted 20. 8. 2014 alia and nowadays about 3,500 metric tonnes of PCB are persisting there and present the greatest PCB environmental risk in the central Published 1. 10. 2014 Europe. The heavy metal contamination in Slovakia is caused by the natural background as well as by the former mining activities. In Slovakia there are about 17 thousand old mining works, i.e. adits, stocks, and impoundments. Contamination of the ground and surface waters in the Spiš–Gemer Ore Mountain (SGOM) area is caused by mine drainage. Arsenic, antimony, copper, mercury, cadmium, and Review zinc are the main pollutants of natural waters. All contaminated areas are currently monitored according to the national and EU legislation and nutrient load reduction programmes. As a result of this the level of inorganic and organic micropollutants in surface water and water reservoirs will be reduced together with the negative impact of water pollution on the environment in Eastern Slovakia region.

  • First Autochthonous Cases of Canine Thelaziosis in Slovakia
Čabanová et al. Parasites & Vectors (2017) 10:179 DOI 10.1186/s13071-017-2128-2 SHORT REPORT Open Access First autochthonous cases of canine thelaziosis in Slovakia: a new affected area in Central Europe Viktória Čabanová1, Peter Kocák2, Bronislava Víchová1 and Martina Miterpáková1* Abstract Background: The spirurid nematode Thelazia callipaeda, also called the “Oriental eyeworm”, is the causative agent of canine and human ocular thelaziosis. In the past few years it has started to spread across central Europe and new endemic areas have been established. The present study reports on the first four autochthonous cases of canine ocular thelaziosis in the territory of Slovakia, Central Europe. Results: All cases were recorded in dogs living in eastern Slovakia, near the border with the Ukraine. All worms collected were investigated morphologically and their identification further confirmed at the molecular level by PCR amplification and direct sequencing. Nucleotide sequences of partial T. callipaeda cox1 and 28S rDNA gene fragments isolated from Slovak dogs were submitted to the GenBank database under accession numbers KY476400 and KY476401, respectively. Conclusions: Considering that all four cases were diagnosed in animals that had never travelled abroad, there is clear evidence of an autochthonous occurrence and thereby the further spread of T. callipaeda across Europe. Moreover, at latitude of 48°N, these cases might be considered as the northernmost recorded cases of autochthonous in western and Central Europe. Keywords: Canine thelaziosis, Thelazia callipaeda, Dogs, Zoonoses, Central Europe, Vector-borne diseases Background The first documented cases of canine thelaziosis The spirurid nematode Thelazia callipaeda Railliet & came from north-western Italy, when T.

Number Water flow significant for water management Number Name of hydrological border in the section (km) catchment area in the section (km) 69. Danube 4-20-01-001 - 1708.02-1850.2 and 1872.7-1880.2 72. Little Danube 4-20-01-010 all the section - 293. Šúrsky channel 4-21-15-005 all the section The Danube river with its system of branches represents the predominant factor in creation of the supplies and quality of ground water. The Danube gravel alluvia are a significant reservoir of ground water and they represent the biggest accumulation of ground water in Central Europe. The main source of ground water is the infiltrated water of the Danube, while the greatest sources of drinking water are located in the alluvial zone of the river. For the above reason, this territory is protected by law and it entire belongs to the significant water supply area of PWA (protected water area) Žitný ostrov. Protected water management area of Žitný ostrov has an area of nearly 1,400 km2, however, it represents only about 20% of the total area (about 7,000 km2) of all PWMA in Slovakia.
