  • ABSTRACT Final
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE BREADTH OF CHOPIN’S INFLUENCE ON FRENCH AND RUSSIAN PIANO MUSIC OF THE LATE 19TH AND EARLY 20TH CENTURIES Jasmin Lee, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Professor Bradford Gowen School of Music Frederic Chopin’s legacy as a pianist and composer served as inspiration for generations of later composers of piano music, especially in France and Russia. Singing melodies, arpeggiated basses, sensitivity to sonorities, the use of rubato, pedal points, and the full range of the keyboard, plus the frequent use of character pieces as compositional forms characterize Chopin’s compositional style. Future composers Claude Debussy, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Alexander Scriabin, Nikolai Medtner, Gabriel Faure, and Maurice Ravel each paid homage to Chopin and his legacy by incorporating and enhancing aspects of his writing style into their own respective works. Despite the disparate compositional trajectories of each of these composers, Chopin’s influence on the development of their individual styles is clearly present. Such influence served as one of the bases for Romantic virtuoso works that came to predominate the late 19th and early 20th century piano literature. This dissertation was completed by performing selected works of Claude Debussy, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Alexander Scriabin, Gabriel Faure, Nikolai Medtner, and Maurice Ravel, in three recitals at the Gildenhorn Recital Hall in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center of the University of Maryland. Compact Disc recordings of the recital are housed

  • Inconstant Tonality in Debussy's La
INCONSTANT TONALITY IN DEBUSSY‘S LA MER by DAVID JONATHAN MARCUS (Under the Direction of Adrian Childs) ABSTRACT: This study is an original harmonic and tonal analysis of Debussy‘s orchestral masterpiece La mer: trois esquisses symphoniques. Based on Debussy‘s praise of freedom and critique of ―overprecise forms,‖ the author undertakes to explain harmony and tonicity in the music afresh, thoroughly adjusting traditional concepts of tonality. He shows that Debussy‘s harmonic originality lies close to the musical surface, and analytical reductions, particularly to familiar tonal objects, tend to conceal its harmonic methods. These methods include the use of whole-step/half-step scales as harmonic regions, the use of maximally intersecting scales for smooth modulation, and the use of invariant pitch classes as organizing agents over long spans of musical time. The auther then replaces the old concept of harmonic function, conceived as a consistent hierarchy centered on tonic and dominant, with a constantly evolving presentation of tonicity. The final portion of the study considers the metaphorical fit of all these techniques for La mer‘s oceanic imagery.

It combines the important characteristics of a high-performance open-reel tape recorder with the convenience of cassettes. The Advent Advent Model Model 201 will make recordings that are indistinguishable from most source material, including the best 201 Tape stereo records and FM broadcasts. Of equal importance, the Model 201 realizes the full potential of the new "Dolbyized" commercially recorded cassettes, the most significant source Deck of recorded music since the introduc tion of the stereo disc. The best of the "Dolbyized" pre-recorded cas settes are easily' the equivalent of the best disc recordings, and the number of releases will be continually in creasing.
