Trials of the War Criminals
TRIALS OF THE WAR CRIMINALS General Considerations The Fascist regime that ruled Romania between September 14, 1940, and August 23, 1944, was brought to justice in Bucharest in May 1946, and after a short trial, its principal leaders—Ion and Mihai Antonescu and two of their closest assistants—were executed, while others were sentenced to life imprisonment or long terms of detention. At that time, the trial’s verdicts seemed inevitable, as they indeed do today, derived inexorably from the defendants’ decisions and actions. The People’s Tribunals functioned for a short time only. They were disbanded on June 28, 1946,1 although some of the sentences were not pronounced until sometime later. Some 2,700 cases of suspected war criminals were examined by a commission formed of “public prosecutors,”2 but only in about half of the examined cases did the commission find sufficient evidence to prosecute, and only 668 were sentenced, many in absentia.3 There were two tribunals, one in Bucharest and one in Cluj. It is worth mentioning that the Bucharest tribunal sentenced only 187 people.4 The rest were sentenced by the tribunal in Cluj. One must also note that, in general, harsher sentences were pronounced by the Cluj tribunal (set up on June 22, 1 Marcel-Dumitru Ciucă, “Introducere” in Procesul maresalului Antonescu (Bucharest: Saeculum and Europa Nova, 1995-98), vol. 1: p. 33. 2 The public prosecutors were named by communist Minister of Justice Lucret iu Pătrăşcanu and most, if not all of them were loyal party members, some of whom were also Jews. -

Self-Censoring Memorial Writing: Crainic's Case1
Self-Censoring Memorial Writing: Crainic’s Case1 Prof. univ. dr. Laura BĂDESCU Institutul de Istorie și Teorie Literară „G. Călinescu” din București Abstract: In her article "Self-Censoring Memorial Writing: Crainic’s Case" Laura Bădescu discusses the memoirs of Nichifor Crainic (1889–1972). Conceived during the Transylvanian War, between 1945–1946, these memoirs were rewritten by the mentor of “Gândirea” in the years 1963–1964, with the aim of his rehabilitation and reintegration into public life. However, this second variant did not pass by the censorship, remaining in the manuscript until after the 1989 revolution. After the revolution, only the first version (V1) was published. The one restored under ideological pressure has remained, to date, in typed form at the Library of the Romanian Academy under A3515 (V2). The article proposes a comparative reading of the two versions, observing the ideological, social and aesthetic tensions that determined in V2 the modification of the memorial writer's reception angle. Keywords: Nichifor Crainic, memorial writing, comparative reading. Nichifor Crainic’s destiny can be described by means of terms such as grandeur, suffering, humiliation, betrayal, struggle and humiliation again. The climb, the fall, the rehabilitation attempt after the jailbreak are the sequences of a man's life that in the interwar period oriented the Romanian letters towards one of the original trends of our culture: gândirismul (thinkingism). An authentic poet, with roots in the line of traditionalists, a memorable theologian and, above all, a professor with university audience at the courses of dogmatic and universal literature, etc., Nichifor Crainic remains in the memory of our culture through the directorate and ideological (and financial) support of the magazine "Gândirea". -
Gidni 2 History and Cultural Mentalities Gala Galaction
GIDNI 2 HISTORY AND CULTURAL MENTALITIES GALA GALACTION - AVATARS OF A UNIVERSITY CAREER Florin Onica, PhD Student, ”Babeș-Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca Abstract:The manner of selection and integration of academic elite is a privileged element of analysis, because it gives us the amount of reasons which terminate in cooptation or rejecting of an individual. These preconditions are quite ambiguous and they also canceled in practice the existence of an unique model of promotion. And the look has generated numerous conflicts that have taken place within the academic world, becoming true public „scandals”, polemical subjects which often has put in discussion the very validity of the principle of meritocracy. Therefore it seems necessary to distinguish for each case some of the mechanisms that have acted in this direction. „Case” Galaction becomes relevant in this context, in order to enlighten what it means becoming professor after 16 years of waiting and encourages questions and seek answers grievous to be made when it comes to personality of this magnitude. Keywords:professor, education, academic career, history of elites, theology. Gala Galaction offers us the example of a man honest with himself, even with the risk of beseeming a misfit against the tendencies of the epoch he lived in. The characteristics of his inedited profile, often perceived as a mixture of contrasts, can be carved from the physical and spiritual portraits of the characters he created. Famous for his literary writings and especially for having translated the Bible, priest Gala Galaction (Grigorie Pișculescu) has had an interesting and lesser known academic career. Rebuilding the diverse sequential aspects of his collegiate path will contribute to the reconstruction of the whole, comprising the light and dark sides inherent to any biography. -
Great Romania Under the Menace of the European Extremism and Revisionism
RSP • No. 58 • 2018: 62-72 R S P ORIGINAL PAPER Great Romania under the Menace of the European Extremism and Revisionism Florin Nacu* Abstract: In this article, there is presented the way in which the adversaries of Great Romania made efforts to fight for its dismemberment, immediately after 1918. The Great Union coincided with the revolution from 1917, and the reinvigoration of revisionism, due to the degree of permissiveness in the Peace Treaties from Paris-Versailles, 1919-1920. The actions meant to destabilise Romania were carried out both from the interior and exterior. There were subversive, violent actions, coordinated by the Soviet and German secret services. Romania did not manage to have a position on the international plan for counteracting the effects of the German and Soviet proximity, which had been foreseen by the diplomat Nicolae Titulescu. In the 22 years, the period Great Romania resisted, there could be seen how complex the evolution of the internal and external politics was, promoted by the decisional factors from Bucharest. The conclusion is that the degradation of the international political system, the ascension of the revisionism, the lack of a coherent dialogue between the representatives of the Romanian political currents, the emerging and the evolution of the extremes represent the causes that led to the collapse of Great Romania, in the summer of 1940. Keywords: right extreme; left extreme; Germany; USSR; revisionism * Ph.D., „CS Nicolăescu Plopșor” Social Humanistic Research Institute, 3rd degree researcher, Craiova; Phone: 0040761617067; Email: [email protected] 62 Great Romania under the Menace of the European Extremism and Revisionism Introduction In the present article, there is to be presented the way in which the Great Union from 1918 was influenced by both the internal and external context. -

George G. Potra, Nicolae Titulescu. Arhive Pierdute. Dosarul Unei
Recenzii. Note – Reviews, Notes 133 George G. Potra, Nicolae Titulescu. Arhive pierdute. Dosarul unei recuperări, Centrul Cultural “Lucian Blaga” – Sebeş, Fundaţia Culturală “Lucian Blaga” – Sebeş, 2015, 600 p. + 209 ilustraţii The archives are some of the main repositories of information we appeal to as individuals, as a community or people. They represent a form of memory we go to for long term research or for immediate interests. We check almost on a daily basis their role and importance in society. Taking the risk of a reproof for exaggerating, I state that in any historical evocation, in any contemporary evaluation and in any future project, we cannot ignore data and ideas kept in archives as premises of any material or spiritual construction. As an institution, the archives in Romania identify their act of birth 170 years ago. The explanation for this tardive reality is to be found in both objective and subjective factors, which have been rigorously identified and analyzed by the historians of the Romanian archives. I am in a rush to underline that, despite all legal regulations, of the stage corrections, administrative, economic and financial measures to consolidate their structures and functionality, under the sign of organicity and efficiency, the institution of the archives has recorded in Romania serious dysfunctions and grave accidents (during war or calamities). With each of these, the informational content of Romanian archives has been affected. The subsequent efforts – no matter how consistent or well-intended – could only reconstruct and restore in a fragmentary and uncertain manner the segments of local and even national history – economic, ethnic, confessional, cultural a.s.o. -
Romanian Prime Minister Gheorghe Tătărescu in the Capitals of the Little Entente: Belgrade (1936) and Prague (1937)

Vol. 66 Accepted for publishing: 05.11.2019. pp. 05-23 Original scientific paper Marusia Cîrstea*1 University of Craiova – Faculty of Social Sciences, Romania Romanian Prime Minister Gheorghe Tătărescu in the Capitals of the Little Entente: Belgrade (1936) and Prague (1937) Abstract The present article presents certain aspects of the relations between Romania, the Czech Republic and Yugoslavia in the inter- war period. The fourth decade of the last century in particular was extremely rich in political, diplomatic and military events. Within this international context, Romanian Prime Minister Gheorghe Tătărescu (1934-1937) sought to establish bilateral contacts – with the great powers of Europe, but mainly with the members of the Little Entente – meant to both strengthen bilateral relations and clarify the states’ perspective on the events in progress. During his visits to Belgrade and Prague – as emerges from the press of the time – Gheorghe Tătărescu permanently advocated maintaining the status-quo and the political, economic and military cooperation between the states of the Little Entente. Key words: the Little Entente, Gheorghe Tătărescu, Milan Hodža, Milan Stojadinović. * Associate Professor [email protected] 5 SERBIAN POLITICAL THOUGHT Introduction Gheorghe Tătărescu was appointed Prime Minister of Roma- nia on 5 January 1934 by King Carol II (Giurescu 2003: 428). He left his mark on the entire government activity in 1934-1937, promoting, on the economic plane, a policy of stimulation of the national industry; on the social plane, he supported the assertion of a middle-class group connected to the state; and on the foreign plane he sought to preserve the Versailles system, to promote regional alliances – the Little Entente and the Balkan Entente, – to prevent both Germany and the Soviet Union from dominating south-eastern Europe (Chistol 2007). -

Elected in December 2004, the new Romanian President, Traian Băsescu, asserted his strong commitment towards Romania’s strategic partnership with the United States and strong ties with Britain, saying that ”the Washington-London-Bucharest axis will be a foreign priority for Romania”. Does this statement represent the recognition of the most important ac- tors that dominate the international setting nowadays or is it the continuation of the previously good relations with Britain and the United States of America? This study analyses both the international setting and the domestic processes that took place in Britain and Romania during the Cold War. -
Ion Luca Caragiale 160 De Ani De La Nastere ’ Si ’ 100 Ani De La Moarte
