Your attention is drawn to the Important Notice on the last page of the text. Situation Llangattock Court is in the small hamlet of Penpergwm which lies within the Usk Valley a few miles to the south east of Abergavenny. Abergavenny has all the expected shops and amenities of an important market town including a well appointed Waitrose. Monmouth has the excellent Haberdashers schools. Closer by is a local store/post office in the Bryn, the famous Hardwick restaurant, and a thriving tennis club. The A40 provides fast access to the M50/M5, and the M4 and the national motorway network and the A465 Heads of the Valley makes the major centres in South Wales highly accessible. Abergavenny has a rail station with a quick link to Newport and from there on to London Paddington (2 hours). Abergavenny is known as the gateway to the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains. There are leisure centres, parks and a castle; the Brecon Beacons are close-by; numerous local golf courses include Abergavenny, Monmouth (Rolls) and Newport (Celtic Manor), the Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal flows nearby; and there are numerous walks and rides through the surrounding countryside. © Crown copyright 2015 Licence Number 100022432 Description of Property Llangattock Court is one of the important houses in Monmouthshire. Dating back to the early Tudor period and Grade II* Listed, the house is essentially of 3 specific periods, the 1500s, 1600’s and early 1900’s. Llangattock Court is a combination of all these early styles and has immense period charm but not at the expense of modern comforts. There are fine period features including moulded stone doorways, decorative tiling, sprung floors, picture rails, exposed beams and handsome stone fireplaces, many with log burning stoves. Most importantly are the proportions of the reception rooms which have high ceilings, rare for a house of this age. The Kitchen is to the rear, with good range of units and a Britannia LPG stove set in a tiled chimney breast. The rear hall leads to a utility room, whilst just outside are storerooms with loft space above. A handsome staircase leads up to a large light landing and the equally well-proportioned bedrooms with lovely views out over the gardens and the mountains beyond. There are two en-suite bathrooms, an ensuite and family shower. The room above the porch is a characterful study Gardens and Grounds The main gardens lie to three sides with wide expansive lawns dotted with various mature shrubs and trees. To the front the tarmac drive passes beneath a splendid Wellingtonia and is flanked by lawns, beech and laurel hedges. To the rear is the wide parking area and garage block, whilst closer to the house a flagstone and cobbled terrace. A large lawn runs off to the west dotted with various specimen trees including a walnut and silver birch, with a chicken run at the far end. Llangattock Court Cottage The spacious Cottage was originally outbuildings attached to the main house but now is a fine two bedroom house with good reception rooms and bathrooms, all in excellent condition (see Floorplans). It has a separate drive, private gardens, a terrace and a very useful outbuilding alongside the gravel parking area. • The Gatehouse
The Gatehouse This is the entrance to Abergavenny Castle, it is called the Gatehouse. It is a barbican gatehouse . A barbican was a wall or tower which protected a castle from attack. The Gatehouse today When Abergavenny Castle was first built, over 900 years ago, the gate was just a simple opening in the castle walls. Castle entrance in about 1087 Castle with Gatehouse in about 1300 Illustrations by Michael Blackmore Walk through the Gatehouse and loolookk closely at the walls around and above you. What can you see? Abergavenny Castle Trail The Gatehouse On the first floor above the gate were comfortable rooms for the Constable of the Castle and his family to live in. The Constable was in charge of the Castle when the Lord was away. The room had a fireplace, large windows and access to the walkways along the walls, as well as a winch to lower or raise the drawbridge. You might be able to spot the two holes above the opening where the chains have worn the stone away? TaTaTakeTa ke a close look at the walls either side of the opeopening.ning. Can you spot any holes where the huge metal door hinges might have been? We think that this stone-built Gatehouse was added about 600 years ago. At this time the Welsh, led by Owain Glyn Dŵr (Owen Glendower) were fighting the Normans who were in control of much of Wales.
