AT THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY ISSUE No. 582 5/32 Channel Highway, Kingston. 7050 • Ph: 6229 3655 • Email [email protected] TUESDAY, 1 JUNE 2021 Family fun run success Ruby Smee finally outpaced her father, Daniel Smee, in the five- kilometre Kingston Beach Fun Run on Sunday, May 23. Daniel won the event in 2003 and Ruby competed for the first time in 2005, at age five. The Kingston Beach Fun and Walk is a fundraising event organised by the Rotary Club of Kingston. The Club’s Past President Mike Percey commented on Ruby’s achievement. “It is a proud moment for most parents when their children compete and beat their parent in a sport that they both love,” remarked Mr Percey. Grant Page was the overall winner of the event, recording at time of 14 minutes and 14 seconds. Ruby came in second place, with a race time of 15 minutes and 32 seconds, closely followed by her father Daniel in third place, recording a time of 15 minutes and 52 seconds. Mr Percey congratulated the winners and thanked all runners and walkers who participated, community organisations who assisted with the logistics of the event and local businesses who donated prizes. “Grant has been a huge supporter of our event,” noted Mr Percey. “It was the 11th win of this event for Grant, in the event’s 18 year history. “It was great to see, that of the around 400 competitors, there were many families running together. “The monies raised will support the many local Rotary projects.” See pages 3 and 8 for photos

Cable car bypasses Kingborough Council Kingborough Council has revealed the people of the municipality have not been consulted regarding the controversial, private cable car and associated infrastructure development proposal on a section of kunanyi/Mount Wellington visible from properties across the region. The Kingborough Chronicle wrote to Kingborough Council and councillors on May 26, in response to a media release from ’s Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael Ferguson MP, who welcomed news that the development had moved forward in the application process being undertaken by City Council. Hobart City Council opened the public notification period for the planning application on May 24. However, Cr Flora Fox said the Kingborough municipality is a part-owner of Mt Wellington and therefore Kingborough Council should be involved in assessment and decision-making. “Five councils, Hobart, Glenorchy, Derwent Valley, Huon Valley and Kingborough, are part land owners of parts of Mt Wellington, including the peak where our boundaries intersect,” noted Cr Fox. “The Mt Wellington Trust was formed in the 1990’s to manage Mt Wellington Park as a reserve. “I understand that this did not remove our ownership or boundaries and therefore our Planning Schemes should allow all of the five councils to have an input to this development application. “Kingborough residents enjoy magnificent daily views of the mountain, from Blackmans Bay and Kingston, to the Channel and Bruny Island. Janet Rapley (front), Sandra O’Neill (left) and other fundraisers participated in an ’s Biggest Morning Tea event at the Taroona “Our mountain has a mystical significance to most people living here, Bowls Club on May 27 to raise funds for the Cancer Council. This is the tenth year Ms Rapley has raised money for the national charity, after including members of the aboriginal community.” hosting the event in her home for nine years.
