PARLIAMENT OF TASMANIA HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY REPORT OF DEBATES Wednesday 11 November 2020 REVISED EDITION Wednesday 11 November 2020 The Speaker, Ms Hickey, took the Chair at 10 a.m., acknowledged the Traditional People and read Prayers. QUESTIONS Launceston General Hospital - Commission of Inquiry into Child Abuse Claims Ms WHITE question to MINISTER for HEALTH, Ms COURTNEY [12.02 p.m.] Former LGH nurse, Jim Griffin, was charged with heinous child sex offences in October last year. You have been aware of this deeply disturbing case for nearly a year. Why was an independent inquiry only established last month? ANSWER Madam Speaker, I thank the member for her question. As I outlined yesterday to the parliament the safety of our children is the highest priority of this Government and, I would hope, the Tasmanian community. The Premier and I have announced an independent investigation into this matter. As I have outlined both to the parliament and also publicly the terms of reference for this investigation have been informed by expert advice. I am advised that the terms of reference are broad enough to give the investigator the scope she needs to be able to investigate these matters. I know that I, the secretary of the Department of Health, and the Premier are fully committed to ensuring this matter is thoroughly investigated and acting upon the findings of this investigation. With regard to the matter of when information was provided, in terms of advice to the LGH around the suspension of this individual's working with vulnerable people provision, on that day I am advised the staff member was directed to not attend work, and access to the hospital and its information systems were blocked.

  • National Broadband Network Companies Amendment (Tasmania
Labor Senators' Dissenting Report 1.1 The intent of the National Broadband Network Companies Amendment (Tasmania) Bill 2014 is to legislate for the fulfilment of the promise Tasmanians believed was made to them prior to the 2013 election. Nothing in the Chair's Report addresses this fundamental issue. 1.2 Australians generally may already be immune to the ongoing saga of the Coalition’s broken promises. Not least of these was the promise made by the Minister for Communications and the Prime Minister in April 2013 that all premises would have access to download speeds of 25 Mbps by 20161. 1.3 So confident was the Prime Minister in this promise that on the night of the election in his “letter to the people of Australia” he wrote: We will deliver a new business plan for the NBN so that we can deliver faster broadband sooner and at less cost. I want our NBN rolled out within three years and Malcolm Turnbull is the right person to make this happen.2 1.4 The promise that all premises would have access to download speeds of 25 Mbps by 2016 was unashamedly broken by Minister Turnbull only three months after the election.3 1.5 The specifics of the promise made to Tasmanians were outlined in Senator Urquhart’s second reading speech. Key issues raised in the second reading speech are as follows. 1.6 The statement by TasICT Executive Officer Dean Winter on 27 May 2013 saying he was confident that the that the rollout would occur as planned because Mr Turnbull had written to assure him that the Coalition intended to honour existing fibre to the premises (FTTP) contracts.4 1.7 The issue came to the fore again on 15 August 2013 when the now Prime Minister released the ‘Economic Growth Plan for Tasmania’ that announced that the Coalition would only honour contracts “underway.” Mr Turnbull, aided by Senator Bushby, again reassured Tasmanians that the NBN would be completed under the 5 original contract to roll out FTTP across Tasmania.

  • 2021 Annual Plan Progress Report
2021 ANNUAL PLAN PROGRESS REPORT JULY - SEPTEMBER 2020 2020/21 ANNUAL PLAN PROGRESS REPORT – Q1 Stronger Councils, Stronger Region A message from the CEO The first Quarterly Progress Report for the 2020/21 financial year shows that the team is off to a flying start. Details of last year’s impact will soon be published in our Annual Report and made available on our website. Our Coastal Pathway project, which spans the Latrobe, Devonport City and Central Coast municipalities, is progressing, and we continue to advocate for the additional funding required to make the Coastal Pathway a truly iconic tourism experience. Advocacy is an important part of our work, and centres around our List Of Regionally Important Projects. Last quarter, we signed a deed with the Australian Government, relating to their $4m commitment for farm vehicle washdown and effluent dumping facilities. The planning stage of this important project, which will firm up the most suitable locations and facility types, is now underway. All staff are predominantly field, or office based once again, with social distancing restrictions having eased. The cessation of separate “Cradle Coast NRM” branding marked the successful completion of our transition to a fully integrated business model in which our Economic Development, Natural Resource Management and Strategic Services staff working closely together for the good of the region. This unprecedented level of cooperation isn’t isolated to staff, but has also been embraced by our Board, our Regional NRM Committee and our Regional Economic Development Steering Group, meaning our unique part of the world is serviced by a unique regional development organisation.
