STATEMENT BY PREMIER Attendance of Minister from the Legislative Council [10.02 a.m.] Mr GUTWEIN (Bass - Premier) - Mr Speaker, with regard to the arrangements for question time today, I understand that in respect to Ms Howlett, Minister for Sport and Recreation, Minister for Racing, Minister for Women and Minister for Small Business, that leave is yet to be granted by the other place in order to allow for her to attend the House of Assembly today. That matter will be dealt with later and she will be joining us tomorrow. QUESTIONS Adam Brooks - Fitness for Public Office Mr O'BYRNE question to PREMIER, Mr GUTWEIN [10.03 a.m.] Prior to the preselection of Adam Brooks, did you have any reason to believe he lacked integrity and was unfit for public office? ANSWER Mr Speaker, I personally and warmly congratulate you on your ascension to the Chair. I am sure you will serve this parliament with distinction. I also add my welcome to new members to this place and hope you find your time here as enjoyable and as fruitful as I have in the work you can do to assist the Tasmanian people to improve their lives. Mr O'Byrne, congratulations on your ascension to Leader of the Opposition. I am sure that as this week rolls out there will be more to be said on that and the arrangements as they have landed. I note that Dr Broad has left us with a wealth of material in which to point out his views and the views of some within Labor of the machinations that have gone on over the last period, but we will deal with those matters as and when they come to hand. To Ms White, thank you for being a decent and responsible Leader of the Opposition during your time here. Albeit there are things we will always disagree on - in fact matters that at times I would say stretched the truth somewhat. I wish you well with regard to the coming circumstances and the new addition to your family. As to the question that was asked in relation to Mr Brooks, I had no dealings with him that would have indicated to me that he was not a fit and proper person to run as a candidate. 1 Wednesday 23 June 2021 Adam Brooks - Fitness for Public Office Mr O'BYRNE question to PREMIER, Mr GUTWEIN [10.05 a.m.] When it was revealed on 8 April that Adam Brooks was facing ammunition storage charges in Tasmania, what specific steps did you take to satisfy yourself that he was a suitable candidate for public office? ANSWER Mr Speaker, I thank the Leader of the Opposition for that question. Regarding the question he has asked in regard to Mr Brooks, I listened very briefly to a radio interview the other day about a matter that was put to the Leader of the Opposition about someone who held a very senior position in the Labor Party, the Labor Party president, and what his views were on Mr McGregor and the circumstances he found himself in. Mr O'Byrne said was it was not his role to act as judge,

You have been aware of this deeply disturbing case for nearly a year. Why was an independent inquiry only established last month? ANSWER Madam Speaker, I thank the member for her question. As I outlined yesterday to the parliament the safety of our children is the highest priority of this Government and, I would hope, the Tasmanian community. The Premier and I have announced an independent investigation into this matter. As I have outlined both to the parliament and also publicly the terms of reference for this investigation have been informed by expert advice. I am advised that the terms of reference are broad enough to give the investigator the scope she needs to be able to investigate these matters. I know that I, the secretary of the Department of Health, and the Premier are fully committed to ensuring this matter is thoroughly investigated and acting upon the findings of this investigation. With regard to the matter of when information was provided, in terms of advice to the LGH around the suspension of this individual's working with vulnerable people provision, on that day I am advised the staff member was directed to not attend work, and access to the hospital and its information systems were blocked.

    CALL THE HANDS OCCASIONAL PAPER 9 Issue No. 9 July 2017 THE SINKING OF HMAS ARMIDALE ON 1st DECEMBER 1942 The following address was delivered by Dr Kevin Smith OAM to members of the Naval Historical Society of Australia in Sydney 18 April 2017. In 1798 at the Battle of the Nile, the French flagship “L’ORIENT” gravely disabled His Majesty’s Ship BELLEROPHON (known to her crew as the “Billy Ruffian”). Immediately a pack of other British vessels concentrated their attack upon L’ORIENT. A flagship carries the commander of a fleet, and bears the commander’s flag. Amid the wreck and carnage of battle the French admiral’s thirteen year old son stood bravely to his post awaiting his father’s permission to leave. The boy, Louis de Casabianca, died at his post when L’ORIENT’s magazine exploded. In 1829, a whole generation later, Felicia Hermans wrote her poem “Casabianca”, beginning with the words: “The boy stood on the burning deck Whence all but he had fled. The flame that lit the battle’s wreck Shone round him o’er the dead.” Every Australian schoolboy growing up in the 1920s and 1930s, a century later still, heard about or occasionally even read that poem, although very few of us ever remembered any of the details. Many impressionable young minds, however, absorbed its powerful message. Young Edward Sheean growing up amid the green farmlands and forests of Barrington south of Ulverstone in Tasmania, was one of those who almost certainly would have known the first line of this poem.

    The Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP Secretary of State for Home Affairs Home Office 2 Marsham Street London SW1P 4DF 15 March 2019 Dear Home Secretary, Refugees (Family Reunion) (No. 2) Bill 2017-19 Almost a year ago, MPs from across the political spectrum united behind a common cause as they overwhelmingly voted to introduce a law that would help reunite refugee families. The current rules condemn child refugees, fleeing conflict and persecution, to live in the UK without their parents. It also prevents parents from bringing their children over the age of 18. At a time when refugees need their families the most, they are being forced to be without them indefinitely. They say a week is a long time in politics, but a year is a long time to wait. For refugee families it means a year of missed birthdays, Christmases, Mother’s Days, Father’s Day and Eids. We cannot let the urgent crowd out the important. We urge you to use your power to stop the delays on this Bill and allow it the necessary time to proceed and be debated. With your help we can bring families together.
