El que descubre una nueva verdad científica tuvo antes que triturar casi todo lo que había aprendido y llega a esa nueva verdad con las manos sangrientas por haber yugulado innumerables lugares comunes" José Ortega y Gasset, La Rebelión de las Masas Este libro es el primer volumen de un largo viaje en tres dimensiones. En la dimensión geográfica comienza en el lejano sur, en Buenos Aires, y llega hasta el Asia Central, pasando por el Oriente Medio y Europa. Finalmente habrá un retorno a la Argentina, cuya crisis, al final del viaje, queda iluminada de manera muy distinta a como lo había estado antes. En la dimensión temporal el viaje dura unos cuatro años, contando desde el segundo atentado terrorista de Buenos Aires (18 de julio de 1994, AMIA) hasta la terminación de este libro. Quedan en el camino, por así decirlo, tres libros anteriores, tres ensayos previos que condujeron finalmente al presente volumen, Terrorismo fundamentalista judío (1996); El Nacional Judaísmo (1997) y España y los judíos (1997). En la dimensión intelectual yo, el viajero, tuve que procesar informaciones, sentimientos y conocimientos cuya existencia simplemente ignoraba al comenzar el viaje. Para dar un ejemplo, mi toma de contacto con la literatura revisionista francesa y de otros países occidentales se produce recién en enero de 1998. Una parte importante de este trabajo ya estaba terminada para esas fechas, incluidas las críticas al libro de Roger Garaudy Los mitos fundadores de la política israelí. Mi conexión con el revisionismo, en especial el francés, y con la obra de Robert Faurisson, si bien es tardía, no por ello dejó de ser eficaz, ya que he encontrado, casi al final del camino, un fundamento sólido y una importante continuidad entre mi propio pensamiento y la obra del revisionismo. Es mi evolución intelectual personal lo que me hace aceptar lo substancial de la metodología del revisionismo. Ella justifica y explica, a nivel científico, muchas ideas que originalmente nacieron en mí como intuiciones que se fueron desarrollando a partir del estudio de un caso concreto -y no teórico- de terrorismo judío. Por ello puedo afirmar con absoluta convicción que mi percepción del mundo es hoy totalmente distinta a la que tenía al comenzar el viaje. Casi todo lo tuve que hacer a gran velocidad porque una parte significativa de esta investigación se hizo sobre el terreno -especialmente en el Oriente Medio- y al ritmo de los acontecimientos cotidianos. Las sorpresas en el plano teórico fueron innumerables. En cada momento fue necesario quedarme un tiempo en algunas de las estaciones del recorrido: en Moscú, en Berlín, en Beirut, en Damasco, pero sobre todo en París y Madrid. Fueron los momentos de reflexión y de lecturas. Este libro presenta, en ese sentido, una 5 importante cantidad de bibliografía: casi toda ella fue analizada -en verdad, visceralmente pulverizada- durante el viaje, propiamente dicho. Gran parte de mis conocimientos anteriores, trabajosamente elaborados a lo largo de toda mi vida, eran inadecuados o simplemente no servían para el objeto de este estudio (ya no sirven para el conocimiento del mundo). La confluencia entre nuevas experiencias políticas concretas y nuevas lecturas, que iban surgiendo como "lecturas obligatorias" durante el mismo viaje, y que eran absolutamente vitales para explicar algunas de las nuevas vivencias, no sólo reestructuraron completamente mi Weltanschauung incial. Esa confluencia produjo en mí la convicción de que toda mi vida anterior había sido "otra vida"; que mis luchas y búsquedas anteriores habían sido relativamente fáciles; que mis enemigos anteriores fueron relativamente dulces. Había vivido 50 años sin saber que aún no había llegado la experiencia decisiva, a pesar de que esa vida anterior no había sido precisamente una vida vacía. Estuvo llena de luchas y de reflexiones. Sin embargo aún no había pasado por la prueba excepcional, "aquella que las organizaciones judías imponen a los individuos que tienen la desgracia de provocar su cólera…(esas organizaciones para las cuales) "el complot y la conjura no son más que reflejos ancestrales", esas organizaciones que tienen un poder destructivo inmenso hoy en el mundo; un poder que va desde lo financiero hasta lo militar, pero que es sobre todo cultural y, antes que nada, teológico. El Antiguo Testamento es una fuente inagotable de odio y de crueldad, "ansioso, febril, frenético, ilimitado; sofoca a sus víctimas por la sorpresa y la dureza de su violencia" (Robert Faurisson). Mi investigación sobre los atentados terroristas de Buenos Aires comenzó en 1994, pocos días después de la segunda explosión, con el ritmo de una encuesta sociológica normal. De una manera muy concreta yo, en aquel momento, no tenía conciencia en absoluto de la existencia de la "cuestión judía", no sabía, por así decirlo, que los judíos en el mundo constituían un parámetro esencial para la comprensión de la realidad del mundo. Con esto quiero decir que había cumplido cincuenta años de una vida política que consideraba plena de acontecimientos y de vivencias, desconociendo completamente el acontecimiento y el problema central del mundo occidental. Although I clutched at the hope that our parents would return, the fatalistic per- son I had become knew deep down it was improbable.” Maren Friedman, a mischling who lived openly with her sister and Jewish mother in wartime Germany states, “My father, who had been captured by the Russians and been a prisoner of war in Siberia, MY LIFE returned to Kiel in 1949. I had yearned for his return and had the fantasy that now that Rivka Pardes Bimbaum the war was over and he was home, all would be well. That was not the way it turned out.” Rebecca Birnbaum had both her parents by war’s end. She was able to return to 12 school one month after the liberation of Brussels, and to this day, she considers herself among the luckiest of all hidden children.

Both monumental events reshaped Jewish history and transformed Jewish memory; thus, each in their own way required inclusion in the Jewish calendar. Commemoration of what we now call the Shoah, the Holocaust, but what was then called by the Jews who experienced it “the Churban,” began even during the war and most certainly took on a communal character immediately after the war ended in the Displaced Persons (DP) camps of Europe as the remnant that survived, the Shearit Hapleitah used even their first months of freedom to begin coming to terms with what had happened. Though it was clear at that point that the Churban would be commemorated, it was unclear when and according to whose calendar. That is to say, should the commemoration be observed in secular time or Jewish sacred time? The massacre of European Jewry was something that happened day by day for three years and ten months.

There were movies, lectures, webinars and a host of assorted activities throughout the world on that Wednesday trying to educate the “civilized” world as to the fact that we can never forget the most catastrophic event of the 21st century – The Holocaust, promulgated between November 1938 – January 1945 with the murder via execution of 11,000,000 civilians because of their religion, their political beliefs, their physical and mental deformities, their sexual orientation and at the whim of Nazi perpetrators. Needless to say all of the Jewish communities throughout the world joined in with this UN Declaration. However, it is also important to remember that the Jewish communities have two other days a year wherein we remember the Holocaust: Kristallnacht & Yom HaShoah. Kristallnacht, Nov 9-10, 1938, speaks for itself as the commemoration of those two days wherein Jewish shops throughout Germany were vandalized, Jews were brutalized in the streets and the beginning of physical Jewish oppression began. Yom Hashoah takes on a different meaning. After the state of Israel was established in May 1948, survivors throughout the land began commemorating their liberation from various camps – their rebirth, so to speak, by using the date of their liberation as the date for commemoration. The survivors of Majdanek observed June 14, the survivors of Bergen-Belsen observed April 15, Auschwitz survivors January 27, etc., etc.

    This first-ever report rating individual European Union countries on how they face up their Holocaust pasts was published on January 25, 2019 to coincide with UN Holocaust Remembrance Day. Researchers from Yale and Grinnell Colleges travelled throughout Europe to conduct the research. Representatives from the European Union of Progressive Judaism (EUPJ) have endorsed their work. Key Findings ● Many European Union governments are rehabilitating World War II collaborators and war criminals while minimising their own guilt in the attempted extermination of Jews. ● Revisionism is worst in new Central European members - Poland, Hungary, Croatia and Lithuania. ● But not all Central Europeans are moving in the wrong direction: two exemplary countries living up to their tragic histories are the Czech Republic and Romania. The Romanian model of appointing an independent commission to study the Holocaust should be duplicated. ● West European countries are not free from infection - Italy, in particular, needs to improve. ● In the west, Austria has made a remarkable turn-around while France stands out for its progress in accepting responsibility for the Vichy collaborationist government. ● Instead of protesting revisionist excesses, Israel supports many of the nationalist and revisionist governments. The Montreal survivors sharing their testimony are: Rachel Abish (born in Hungary, she recalls the hunger she suffered while living in yellow star and Red-Cross houses), Nettie Herscher (born in the Netherlands, she remembers packing bags before her family’s deportation to Westerbork and Bergen-Belsen), Bill Lewkowict (born in Lithuania, he hid in a forest for two years after escaping the ghetto), Judith Nemes Black (born in Hungary, she recalls learning a new name and identity while living in hiding), Edmond Silber, (born in France, he escaped the Vel d’Hiv roundup and lived in hiding in small village until liberation), Charlotte Wexler (born in Yugoslavia, she survived multiple concentration camps and a death march from Ravensbrück).     VOCABULARY OF THE HOLOCAUST Antisemitism - Prejudice towards, or discrimination against, Jews. Antisemitism was not new to Nazi Germany or Europe; feelings of hatred and distrust of Jews had existed there for centuries. (“Antisemitism” can also be written with a hyphen, as “anti-semitism,” but the growing consensus is to write it without a hyphen.) Aryan - “Aryan” was used originally to identify peoples speaking the languages of Europe and India. The Nazis changed it to mean “superior race,” described as white, tall, athletic, with blond hair and blue eyes. Auschwitz - Usually refers to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp, located 37 miles west of Cracow, Poland. Established in 1940, it became a huge camp complex that included a killing center and slave labor camps. Bar Mitzvah - Jewish religious ceremony held on a boy’s thirteenth birthday marking his passage into manhood. Bystander - One who is present at an event or who knows about its occurrence and chooses to ignore it. That is, he or she neither participates in, nor responds to it. Collaborator - In the context of war, one who cooperates with the enemy who is occupying his/her country and/or persecuting his/her people. Concentration camps - Nazi system for imprisoning those consider “enemies of the state.” Many different groups and individuals were imprisoned in concentration camps: religious opponents, resisters, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Roma and Sinti (Gypsies), Poles, and Jews. Concentration camps were further subdivided into labor camps and death camps. Before the end of World War II, several thousand of these concentration camps were operating throughout Europe, in all countries conquered by the German army, especially Poland, Austria and Germany.

READER: Throughout the year, we remember how despots have sought the exile and annihilation of the Jewish people. At Pesach, we tell of Pharaoh. At Hanukkah, of Antiochus. At Purim, of Haman. At Yom HaShoah, of Hitler. We speak of past oppressors, hoping that through awareness we may prevent future tyrants from attaining power. But we also give thanks for those in every generation who came forward to lead our people out of the darkness. We recognize heroic rescuers from every generation, hoping that the memory of their strength will fortify us if confronted with similar evil. READER: We remember Moses, who, with both vision and courage, led his people from slavery to freedom. We remember the Maccabees, whose strength and determination saved the Temple and Jewish life in the Land of Israel. We remember Esther, who interceded to save fellow Jews from destruction. While we commemorate the heroes of the past, we also remember modern heroes who saved Jews from the Holocaust. TOGETHER: During this dark time, there were those who had the courage to care – non-Jews who risked their lives, and often the lives of their families, to save Jews from death. READER: Just as we tell of Moses leading our people to freedom, at our Seder we also tell of contemporary heroes and how they led Jews to their freedom more than sixty years ago. READER: At this Passover Seder we recount the story of Nina Marchuk and her rescue of Rima Shipitsina in Ukraine.
