MICHAEL BERENBAUM The systematic state-sponsored murder of six million Jews, which Americans commonly call the Holocaust (Israelis call it the Shoah" and the Nazis called it “The Final Solution to the Jewish Question”) is an enormous event that darkens the landscape of 20th-century humanity and continues to haunt us in the new millennium. Auschwitz redefi ned the moral landscape of our common humanity. The history of this event can be written in many ways and in many disciplines and genres: history—Jewish history, German history, American history, European history—and sociology, religion, psychology, political science, art, music, literature, fi lm, and theater, to name but a few. It can be outlined in stages and processes. The great historian Raul Hilberg spoke of defi nition, expropriation, concentration, deportation, mobile killing units and death camps. German law defi ned the Jews in 1935, declaring that all those of Jewish ancestry, even two generations back, were Jews, no matter what religion they practiced, what traditions they embraced, or the identity they maintained. This held true until 1945, and included the territories the Germans conquered. Beginning in 1933, German law and society expropriated Jewish property and business, possessions and holdings, reversing a 150-year process of emancipation that saw the Jews gain rights as citizens of the country. The Jews were denied civil liberties and rights, and were segregated in a society implementing apartheid policies. Parenthetically, since 1945, when the Holocaust ended to the time of this printing, we have learned that neutral powers such as Switzerland and supposedly neutral industries— such as banks and insurance companies; even distinguished museums and trend-setting art collectors—participated in the processes of expropriation and enjoyed its fruits. All of these Nazi decrees were designed to get the Jews to leave, to make Germany and its conquered lands Judenrein—free of Jews. These laws and decrees, business practices, and social norms were designed to give an incentive and to provide a reward for discrimination. Expropriation of Jewish properties since then continues even in our time. Jews were concentrated fi rst in ghettos and later in concentration and slave labor camps, kept together pending a decision on what to do about the "Jewish question." What does one do about these Jews? They were deported from small communities to larger ghettos in Eastern Europe and from cities in Western Europe to transit camps that sent them eastward. All the while, the German Reich expanded, and more and more Jews came under its control. Then the decision was made and a policy was implemented. x Though some scholars contend that the policy began locally and only then was implemented regionally and internationally, it was large and bold and euphemistically, called “The Final Solution to the Jewish Question.” In simple terms, “The Final Solution” meant murdering every Jew the Nazis and their collaborators could get their hands on. At fi rst, mobile troops were sent to stationary victims; Jews were shot one by one in the towns and villages of captured Soviet territory in 1941. Later, this process proved cumbersome both for the killers and the bystanders—no consideration was given to their victims—so

    Holocaust Museums Issue Joint Statement on Antisemitic Vandalism in Florida June 3, 2021 We unequivocally condemn the cowardly and despicable act of vandalism at The Florida Holocaust Museum on May 27. The abhorrent graffiti and hateful rhetoric that defaced the museum is an act of antisemitism, hatred and violence targeting Jews. We will not be intimidated or waver in the mission of each of our organizations to educate on the dangers of unchecked hate. Holocaust education increases empathy, improves open-mindedness to differing viewpoints, and creates a greater sense of social responsibility and willingness to stand up to negative stereotyping and discrimination. The lessons of the Holocaust remain relevant today because Nazi Germany’s ultimate hatred shows how far human beings are willing to go to destroy those who are different from themselves. We need to understand what happens when hatred and prejudice is not stopped. Hundreds of thousands of people visit our museums each year. The most important lesson we teach about the Holocaust is that history is made through a series of choices and that every choice has a consequence. Choices by individuals have power. At a time when hate crimes and antisemitism are on the rise, we fervently encourage everyone to denounce antisemitic and all hate speech, hate groups, and acts of violence.     Evidence of Jewish Escapees From the Ninth Fort in Kovno on the Burning of the Bodies Protocol, Kovno, December 26, 1943 We, the undersigned, a group of prisoners from the Ninth Fort, who escaped from there during the night from the 25th to the 26th of December of this year, consisting of: J.L. Vaslenitzki [Vasilenko], A. Diskant, A. Faitelson, M. Gelbtrunk, P. Krakinowski, M. Daitz, A. Wilenczuk, T. Pilownik, Gempel, Sh. Idelson, and A. Menaiski have put together this protocol regarding the following: 1. In the period of the years 1941-42, the area of the Ninth Fort was used by the German Command to carry out mass shootings. 2. In order to conceal this crime, the German Command, in the person of the Commander of the Kovno Gestapo, arranged for the re-opening of all the graves where the victims of the executions had been buried and set about burning the bodies. 3. In order to carry out this work the Gestapo collected 72 persons at the Ninth Fort at the end of October and beginning of November of this year. These were 34 Soviet prisoners of war, 14 Jewish partisans, 3 local Russians, caught while carrying out sabotage, 4 women -- 3 of them Jewish, one Polish - - and 17 Jews from the Kovno ghetto. 4. The work was organized in such a fashion that the surrounding population should not find out anything about it, and in fact that nobody should know what was being done in the area of the Ninth Fort. Notices were put up everywhere at a distance of 2 kms.
