CAPÍTULO PRIMEIRO O CAMINHO DO OCIDENTE O desembarque dos primeiros Portugueses no Japão deu-se em 1542 ou 1543. C. R. Boxer, no seu último livro, The Christian Century in Japan, dá como certo o desembarque de 1543 na ilha de Tanegashima; se alguma viagem se realizou antes, crê teria levado às ilhas Riukiu1. Não são ao certo conhecidos os nomes dos primeiros Portugueses que aportaram no Japão. António Galvão, no seu Tratado, diz que foram António da Mota, Francisco Zeimoto e António Peixoto, levados por uma tempestade. Diogo do Couto recebeu esta versão, que vários outros historiadores, antigos e modernos, aceitaram. Outros escritores nomeiam Cristóvão Borralho, Diogo Zeimoto e o imaginoso e aventureiro Fernão Mendes Pinto, que se gaba de figurar entre os descobridores do Japão. Boxer prova no seu livro que nos anos da descoberta ele não podia lá estar. Até hoje não foram encontrados documentos nem argumentos para esclarecer decididamente a questão2. Os Portugueses foram mais bem recebidos no Japão do que na China. É comummente atribuído o êxito dos primeiros contactos com os Japoneses à introdução da espingarda, que os Nipónicos, sendo um povo tradicionalmente guerreiro, admiraram muito. A penetração no Japão foi feita pelos jesuítas e pelos negociantes. Em 1549, S. Francisco Xavier desembarcou em Kagoshima, ficando no Japão até 1551. Em cerca de dois anos conseguiu converter ao cristianismo nas cidades de Kagoshima, Hirado e Yamaguchi à volta de 800 pessoas. O número de cristãos foi aumentando, pois novos jesuítas foram enviados pelo vice-rei da Índia, e logo em 1558, por causa dos zelos e dos conflitos com os padres budistas, surgiram as primeiras 1 C. -

Within the context of the Jesuit prose of that time it is a unique methodological option, resulting from the author’s correct perception as pertains to the decisive influence that Chinese culture had in East Asia. Despite the numerous problems related with the textual systemization of those Chinese matters, it results in a brief descriptive treaty about China. It is also the first relevant synthesis on the subject written in China itself after the work left by Matteo Ricci in 1610. -

BPJS, 2015, II, 1, 5-26 The Portuguese in Hormuz and the trade in Chinese Porcelain1 Rui Manuel Loureiro Instituto Superior Manuel Teixeira Gomes & CHAM (FCSH, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and Universidade dos Açores) Abstract The relations between Persia and China were many centuries old when the Portuguese first arrived on the island of Hormuz in the early years of the sixteenth century. Archaeological evidence found in Persian Gulf settlements frequently includes shards and/or pieces of Chinese ceramics, testifying to an intense maritime trade. For centuries, then, Chinese ceramics had been imported into Persia, both by land and sea routes, assuming an important role in the daily life and in the collecting habits of the Persian elites, and also influencing the arts and crafts of Persian potters. But during the reign of Shah Abbas I, a particular interest in collecting Chinese ceramics seems to have developed in the Safavid realm. Was there some sort of connection with the Portuguese establishment of Hormuz and the consequent easier accessibility to Chinese commodities, and namely porcelains? An analysis of the contents of the Ardabil shrine collection seems to suggest a Portuguese connection, meaning that at least part of the Chinese ceramics came to Persia through the mediation of Portuguese Hormuz. Resumo As relações entre a Pérsia e a China eram antiquíssimas, quando os portugueses chegaram à ilha de Ormuz nos primeiros anos do século XVI. Vestígios encontrados em escavações arqueológicas levadas a cabo no Golfo Pérsico incluem frequentemente peças de cerâmica chinesa, testemunhando um intenso tráfico marítimo. Durante séculos, as porcelanas chinesas importadas por mar e por terra para a Pérsia tinham assumido um papel relevante na vida diária e nos hábitos de coleccionismo das elites persas, influenciando também as artes e técnicas dos ceramistas persas. -

Wenceslau de Moraes’ vision of Japan Predicting that European civilisation had entered a period of decadence, Wenceslau de Moraes felt that the European way of life had lost its funda- mental sense of life and soul. Therefore, he decided to abandon everything and go see if the Oriental way of life was better suited to resolve the prin- cipal problem of happiness. In Japan, he came into contact with religions, philosophies and arts in general that viewed problems of life and death, the individual and the universe in new and more mature terms. The impact generated by this discovery of the Other, i.e. the Japanese people, with an entire system of singular values that were radically different led to an exaggerated valorisation of these elements, when contrasted with those he knew prior to this. His contemplation of everything that was differ- ent and fascinating, on account of being inaccessible, resulted in a constant attempt to delight in the Other as a supreme experience in relation to all other possible experiences. -

Two Portuguese in Japan: Essays on Japanese Culture from Joao Rodrigues Tguzzu, S .J. to Wenceslau de Moraes K. David Jackson Abstract: A comparison of essays on Japanese culture from the first period of Portuguese missionary activity, represented by Joao Rodrigues (in Japan 1577-1610), and from the period of exoticism and aestheticism of the late nineteenth century in Wenceslau de Moraes (in Japan 1895-1929). Includes a survey of scholarship on the Portuguese in Japan and descriptions of the tea ceremony by Rodrigues and Moraes, with English translations. Of the Westerners in Japan who lived there for long periods, devoted much of their attention and interest to its culture and wrote extensively, whether as history or essay, on Japanese cultural rituals, two of the most interesting are the Portuguese missionary Joao Rodrigues, in Japan from 1577 until 1610, and the consul and aesthete Wenceslau de Moraes, in Japan from 1895 until his death in 1929, thirty-three and thirty-four years in Japan, respectively. Although their arrivals in Japan were separated by more than 300 years, the devotion of each to Japanese cultural ceremonies and the detailed descriptions they penned allow the contemporary reader to contemplate a rare comparison over the centuries. We will be focusing on the analyses of the Japanese modernization from the view of British scholars and diplomats such as Ernest Mason Satow (1843-1929) and Basil Hall Chamberlain (1850-1935) and from the Portuguese perspective guided by the writer and diplomat Venceslau de Morais (1854-1929). -

Among the biographies of persons associated with the Real Convento de Santa Monica is a lengthy one of D. Aleixo de Menezes, who was archbishop of Goa at the time of the convent’s foundation. -

He was much appreciated by both his students as well as his colleagues for his didactic and pedagogical talents as well as for his many human qualities. I cherish many memories of those early days in which I first got to know Prof. Jorge Dias, when I was a still a post graduate student, in 1972. At that time, Professor Dias lived in a house built in the traditional Japanese architectural style, close to our University, along with his wife, Helena, also a professor, and their daughter Sylvia. Despite the fact that I had studied in Brazil for some time, even I acquired the accent of European Portuguese! In fact, my acquaintanceship with Professor Jorge Dias’ family was to have a very strong influence upon my future academic life. -

Wenceslau de Morães: acculturation between ideals and life experiences Wenceslau de Morães: Cultural fusion between maintenance and change Abstract Acculturation is often a complex and contradictory phenomenon. The Morães’s work and life reported it. At individual level, Morães reported a fusionist life during nationalist and colonialist times. However, at social level and on his books he preferred a reduced cultural relationship among Japan and Westerns, in order to maintain the Japanese culture. The Morães’s contradictions are connected to social dominance, even because the reduced Japanese behavior regarding other cultures drove in fact to violent relationships. The Morães’s attitude also reported the current limits of the multicultural model, because contact led to changes, and not only to cultural maintenance. It unveiled also the limits of assimilation, because Japan imitated, but maintained its culture. The contradictions reported that the dilemma about cultural contact and change was unsolved, and the current article did not provide a major solution for aggressive relationships. However, the article stated that Europeans should be placed and reported on the position of who is learning a second culture in order to build a common Global History. Morães reported to learn a second culture and, at the same time, he reported a precarious balance between change and maintenance. Furthermore, Morães’s life and books remind readers that acculturation (learning) creates culture by fusion. VII, 1994-4.°, 619-628 A CHINA E MACAU NA OBRA DE WENCESLAUDE MORAES Celina Veiga de Oliveira * Ex Oriente Lux — a luz vem do Oriente Na dialéctica de recusas e recuperações da História, a frase contém, em síntese, o estado de espírito que afecta uma parte da «intelligenzia» europeia dos finais do séc. XIX e que se manifesta pela procura urgente de uma qualquer dimensão oriental. O colonialismo europeu atinge, após a Guerra do Ópio, a região do Extremo Oriente, impondo um «mare nostrum» político, económico e militar. A burocracia colonial faz deslocar, por necessidades de gestão, inúmeros funcionários do Ocidente que observam, comparam, cumprem ou rejeitam o fascínio de culturas milenares e diferentes. Os relatórios administrativos que enviam às metrópoles, as impressões de viagens, os comentários que tecem sobre o exótico de costumes e de paisagens geram na Europa uma dinâmica de curiosidade e de apetência. Ora isto ocorre num tempo de crise e de crítica protagonizada por um espaço intelectual, para quem o Ocidente é incapaz de recriar ideias e de projectar soluções. O Ocidente, paradigma perdido, esgota-se num fatalismo decadente e numa estética niilista. Neste contexto, o Sol Nascente surge impoluto, revigorante e mitificado. A infusão oriental na Europa cria dois mercados de cultura: de um lado, a busca de uma ideia abarcante da filosofia, da arte, da literatura e da espiritualidade orientais, tratada em termos eruditos; do outro, uma vulgarização da informação sobre esse mundo, que acaba por servir os interesses do capitalismo colonial. Assim, e com diferentes justificações sociais e culturais, ambos os mercados geram processos de radicação e de experiência de vida no Oriente.
