IN MEMORIAM JORGE DIAS (1932 - 2002) In memory of a 20th Century Japanologist Sumida Ikunori1 Kyoto University of Foreign Studies
We have recently lost a great friend and colleague, Professor Jorge Dias, who lived in Japan for 28 years, from 1972 to 2000, where he was Lecturer at the University of Foreign Studies, in Kyoto. He was much appreciated by both his students as well as his colleagues for his didactic and pedagogical talents as well as for his many human qualities. I cherish many memories of those early days in which I first got to know Prof. Jorge Dias, when I was a still a post graduate student, in 1972. At that time, Professor Dias lived in a house built in the traditional Japanese architectural style, close to our University, along with his wife, Helena, also a professor, and their daughter Sylvia. Despite the fact that I had studied in Brazil for some time, even I acquired the accent of European Portuguese! In fact, my acquaintanceship with Professor Jorge Dias’ family was to have a very strong influence upon my future academic life. Jorge Dias adored Japan, and it seemed to us that he lived much in the same manner as Wenceslau de Moraes. However, unlike Moraes, he died in Lisbon, on the 26th January 2002, far away indeed from Tokushima! I greatly feel the loss of my friend and professor! Jorge Dias was born on the 17th June 1932. In 1966, he obtained his Graduate degree from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon. He completed his Masters degree in European and U.S. History, from Purdue University, Indiana, in 1968. In 1972, he went to Japan as a Lecturer of the Institute of Portuguese Language and Culture, to teach at the Kyoto University of Foreign Studies. In addition to his qualities as a professor, Jorge Dias was a tireless and diligent researcher, who has left us a vast body of work, in various fields of research: Portuguese-Japanese Relations, Luso-Brazilian-African Culture and Anglo- American Culture.

From amongst his many works, his numerous studies on Wenceslau de Moraes stand out, and he was considered to be an authority on the subject. Due to the importance of his life’s work, in this humble tribute to a great master and researcher, we consider it relevant to reproduce below a list of the titles of his published works:

To conclude this remembrance of Prof. Jorge Dias, I would like to quote from the words of Wenceslau de Moraes:
“Estou n’um país delicioso, o Japão. Era aqui em Nagazaqui, que eu desejaria passar o resto da minha vida, à sombra d’estas árvores que não teem parceiras no mundo....mas deixo com saudade este torrão abençoado por Deus, cheio de paisagens adoráveis, cheio de flores, cheio de sorrisos; terra feita para a alma se recolher em doces pensamentos, e para o espírito cansado da vida poder ainda purificar-se e elevar à Providência um agradecimento”.

“I am in a wonderful land – Japan. It is here, in Nagasaki, that I would like to spend the rest of my days, in the shadow of these trees that are without peer in all the world…. But I leave this land blessed by God, with much nostalgia. It is a land full of beautiful landscapes, full of flowers, full of smiles; a land made for the soul to introspect upon sweet thoughts and where a weary spirit can still purify itself and raise a vote of thanks to Providence”.
