In this course, you will take part in several activities to improve your historical literacy. While the content covered in this course is important, a principal purpose is to equip you with the tools necessary to be more successful in college coursework. To that end, the creators of the course have developed this academic notebook. Purposes of the Academic Notebook The academic notebook has two roles in this course. The first role of the notebook is to provide you with a personal space to record your work. The academic notebook is where you should record your thoughts about materials you are reading. For example, if you are hearing a lecture, take notes in this notebook. Use the tools in the notebook to assist you in organizing your notes. -

This dissertation will focus on both the Agroville and Strategic Hamlet Programs examining their organization, construction, and goals and the Viet Cong response to counter their implementation. It examines how the South Vietnamese with assistance from the United States military and Central Intelligence Agency under Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy conducted armed nation-building from 1955‒63 on an unprecedented scale. -

Starting at age seven, and throughout his childhood, Mr. Perot held various jobs, including buying and selling bridles, saddles, horses and calves. The paper begins with a brief review of the nature of the war and the legal verification of atrocities in Vietnam. The thesis advanced by this paper is that the atrocities committed in Vietnam were a direct result of the technologies developed for and employed by the belligerents to the conflict; and, the psychological conditioning to which members of the warring sides were exposed both prior to and during the conflict. The paper further suggests that these two elements contributed to the atrocity-producing situation in Vietnam by means of an "action-reaction" process. -

ABSTRACT SON NGOC THANH, THE UNITED STATES, AND THE TRANSFORMATION OF CAMBODIA Matthew Jagel, PhD Department of History Northern Illinois University, 2015 Kenton Clymer, Director The Khmer Rouge period of Cambodia’s history is one of the most scrutinized in studies of modern Southeast Asia. What has yet to be examined in sufficient detail is the period leading up to Democratic Kampuchea and the key players of that era, aside from Cambodia’s King (later Prince) Norodom Sihanouk. The story of Son Ngoc Thanh, one of Cambodia’s modern heroes, has yet to be told in detail, and will be a goal of this project. This is not a traditional biography, but instead a study of how Cambodian nationalism grew during the twilight of French colonialism and faced new geopolitical challenges during the Cold War. Throughout Son Ngoc Thanh is the centerpiece. Following a brief stint as Prime Minister under the Japanese, Son Ngoc Thanh’s influence pushed Sihanouk toward a hard-line stance with respect to independence from France, resulting in a free Cambodia by 1953. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Thanh and his group the Khmer Serei (Free Cambodia) exacerbated tensions between Cambodia and its Thai and South Vietnamese neighbors as he attempted to overthrow the Sihanouk government. Thanh also had connections to both American Special Forces and the CIA in South Vietnam. He was involved with the coup to unseat Sihanouk in 1970, and returned to the new Khmer Republic government later that year, only to be pushed out by 1972.
