ABSTRACT This thesis examines the British Commonwealth and Allied Naval forces operation on the west coast during the final two and a half years of the Korean War, particularly focused on their co- operation with the anti-Communist guerrillas. The purpose of this study is to present a more realistic picture of the United Nations (UN) naval forces operation in the west, which has been largely neglected, by analysing their activities in relation to the large number of irregular forces. This thesis shows that, even though it was often difficult and frustrating, working with the irregular groups was both strategically and operationally essential to the conduct of the war, and this naval-guerrilla relationship was of major importance during the latter part of the naval campaign. -

Chapter I: An Unforgettable, Humble Journey across the South China Sea After living almost 38 years in the USA I moved to Brisbane, Queensland Australia at the end of December 2016. I was very much done with my 30-year engineering career and wanted to retire early so that I could enjoy my life a little bit. My Aussie-citizen wife and I finally got a nice waterfront apartment where we could see and visit the river or the beach every day. Chevron Island, a view from our living room in Surfers Paradise, Queensland, Australia I am staying at the number-one tourist attraction in Australia: Surfers Paradise in the City of Gold Coast, not too far from Brisbane, State Capital. There are only 25 million Australians in the whole country but each year there are more than 12 million tourists that visit this wonderful city alone. What’s a lucky life you may say! I could have embraced the fresh air, great tropical fruits, beautiful view, warm sea water, and relaxing atmosphere for the rest of my life on this earthy Paradise. Seeing the river, ocean and ships perhaps made me think about the story of how I got here. I am a Vietnamese American, meaning a US citizen born in Vietnam; South Vietnam to be exact. Just a brief history lesson here, per the Geneva Agreement, Vietnam was divided into two halves on July 20th, 1954. -

U.S. Coast Guard Oral History Program Interviewee: Marvin J. Perrett, USCGR World War II U. S. Coast Guard Veteran Interviewer: Scott Price, Deputy Historian Date of Interview: 18 June 2003 Place: U. S. Coast Guard Headquarters, Washington, D.C. Marvin Perrett joined the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and served aboard the Coast Guard-manned attack transport USS Bayfield (APA-33) as a coxswain of one of the Bayfield's landing craft. He was a veteran of the invasions of Normandy, Southern France, Iwo Jima and Okinawa and he even survived the "Exercise Tiger" debacle prior to the Normandy invasion. Although each of these events has received extensive coverage, his story, and the story of the thousands of young men who manned the boats that landed troops on enemy beaches, is little- known. It seems that the men who transported the troops to the beach were often been overlooked by historians, writers, and film producers. Yet, as Mr. Perret points out, without them, how would any invasion have happened? 1 Mr. Perrett's oral history is comprehensive. He describes his decision to join the Coast Guard and he then delves into the extensive training he received and how he was picked to be the sailor in charge of a landing craft. He also describes, in detail, this craft he sailed through enemy fire during the invasions he took part in. The boat he commanded was the ubiquitous LCVP, or "Landing Craft, Vehicle / Personnel. It was made primarily of wood by the famous company Higgins Industries in New Orleans. -

Bankston, III Assistant Professor of Sociology, Tulane University INTRODUCTION Educators, counselors, school administrators, juvenile authorities, and others who work with young people today routinely come into contact with the children of Vietnamese refugees. e story of Vietnamese Americans is one of very rapid growth. In the early 1970s, there were fewer than 15,000 Vietnamese in the United States. According to the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Services (U.S. INS), the United States admitted only 4,561 Vietnam-born persons between 1961 and 1970; most were exchange students, trainees, or diplomats on nonimmigrant visas, along with a small number of wives of U.S. servicemen, while almost none were children (Skinner, 1980; Zhou & Bankston, 1998). After the fall of Saigon in 1975, Vietnamese Americans became members of one of America’s largest refugee groups, and, thus, increasingly visible in the American ethnic mosaic. By 1990, the group numbered over 615,000, a 40-fold increase in just 15 years; and even this figure understates the true size of the Vietnamese-origin population, since it excludes no fewer than 200,000 Sino-Vietnamese (ethnic Chinese), who fled Vietnam and arrived in the United States as part of the larger refugee outflow from Southeast Asia (Rumbaut, 1995a). At the turn of the new millennium, this refugee group is on the verge of becoming the third largest Asian American group, following the Chinese and Filipinos.1 ere were virtually no Vietnamese students in American elementary or secondary schools before 1975. -

Navy and Coast Guard Ships Associated with Service in Vietnam and Exposure to Herbicide Agents Background This ships list is intended to provide VA regional offices with a resource for determining whether a particular US Navy or Coast Guard Veteran of the Vietnam era is eligible for the presumption of Agent Orange herbicide exposure based on operations of the Veteran’s ship. According to 38 CFR § 3.307(a)(6)(iii), eligibility for the presumption of Agent Orange exposure requires that a Veteran’s military service involved “duty or visitation in the Republic of Vietnam” between January 9, 1962 and May 7, 1975. This includes service within the country of Vietnam itself or aboard a ship that operated on the inland waterways of Vietnam. However, this does not include service aboard a large ocean- going ship that operated only on the offshore waters of Vietnam, unless evidence shows that a Veteran went ashore. Inland waterways include rivers, canals, estuaries, and deltas. They do not include open deep-water bays and harbors such as those at Da Nang Harbor, Qui Nhon Bay Harbor, Nha Trang Harbor, Cam Ranh Bay Harbor, Vung Tau Harbor, or Ganh Rai Bay. These are considered to be part of the offshore waters of Vietnam because of their deep-water anchorage capabilities and open access to the South China Sea. In order to promote consistent application of the term “inland waterways”, VA has determined that Ganh Rai Bay and Qui Nhon Bay Harbor are no longer considered to be inland waterways, but rather are considered open water bays. -

Vietnamese Boat People Interview Project Disclaimer The focus of this interview is to learn more about the experiences of Vietnamese Boat People, Southeast Asian refugees who fled after the Vietnam War. Due to the nature of this interview, we want to make sure that the interviewee and interviewer are aware that some of these questions can trigger traumatic memories and cause emotional and mental distress. Therefore, we want to make sure that the interviewee feels safe during the interview, and knows that he/she has the right to skip a question/topic and even stop the interview at any time. Guidelines for Interviewers • Please show the utmost respect to your interviewee. • Create a safe space, and make sure you both are comfortable. Discuss points of discussion before the interview, making sure you both are on the same page. • Acknowledge that it is not your job to interpret their experience, but rather to listen and help them share their own story. • No two stories are the same, so do not try to force the interview into a specific narrative. • Encourage interviewees to open up to you, but do not pry. Recognize the limits. Make sure the interviewee knows that they can pass on any question or topic they feel uncomfortable addressing. • Try to make your questions open-ended so the answer is not just "yes" or "no." • If you ask for or are shown photos or documents, please ask to make sure it is okay if you share them on the PYD website. • At the end of the interview, remember to thank your interviewee. -

Sailing Away From the Turbulent Waters of Vietnam: The Overflowing Waves of Boat People Vy Nguyen Junior Division Individual Documentary Process Paper: 500 words Process Paper My ancestry has always held my interest, and when this year’s “Conflict and Compromise” theme was announced, I wanted to research a topic that I could connect with on a personal level, essentially being my heritage. Having visited Vietnam multiple times, I knew that the Vietnam War affected countless numbers of people. Wanting to emphasize the aftermath of the War and specifically, its impact on Vietnamese people, I narrowed my interest down to the conflict of overflowing waves of Boat People and how the international community compromised with one another to develop a humane solution to the refugee crisis. To begin acquiring information once my topic was finalized, I traveled to the Wichita State University Research Library to locate primary and secondary sources consisting of government documents and books. Then, I digged online, and was able to get to the Texas Tech University’s Vietnam Archive to get images, videos, and newspaper articles that I needed. To comprehend how countries perceived the Boat People dilemma, I used statements from the U.S. Committee on Foreign Affairs and numerous history websites. For photos, I utilized the Associated Press Archive, Hollis Images from Harvard, and the United Nations Photo Library. To understand the adversaries emigrants faced attempting to flee Vietnam, I interviewed three Vietnamese Boat Refugees: my former third-grade teacher Lan Huynh, Dennis Tran, and Mai Le. Listening to their stories helped me grasp the magnitude of what refugees were willing to risk to have a better future. -
