This work; encompassing several papers and various chapters of my book are attached behind this essay. The research question, examines the effect of Western support to warlords on political legitimacy in the post 9/11 Afghan war. I contextualise the research question in terms of my critical engagement with the literature of strategists in Afghanistan during this time. Subsequently, I draw out themes in relation to the available literature on warlords, politics and security in Afghanistan. I highlight the value of thinking about these questions conceptually in terms of legitimacy. I then introduce the published work, summarising the focus of each paper or book chapter. Later, a ‘findings’ section addresses how the policy of supporting warlords has affected legitimacy through its impact on security and stability, the political settlement and ultimately whether Afghans choose to accept the Western-backed project in Afghanistan, or not. -

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and the Gulf Crisis About Gulf Studies Center The Gulf Studies Center at the College of Arts and Sciences at Qatar University is the world’s first to focus exclusively on the Gulf within the region itself, which aims to advance teaching and scholarship in the Gulf Studies field. It was initially developed in 2011, by offering MA in Gulf Studies. Due to the increasing regional and global interest in this strategic area, the Gulf Studies Research Center was established in the fall of 2013. The Center is committed to advancing cutting-edge research and scholarship on the Gulf region. It also hosts a number of conferences and research events in collaboration with other regional and international partners. To complement the success and to cater for the increasing interest and demand, the PhD Program in Gulf Studies was launched in 2015. The Center engages in interdisciplinary, Gulf-focused studies and research in three main areas: Politics and Security; Energy and Economics; and Social Issues. Pakistan National Human Development Report Unleashing the Potential of a Young Pakistan The front cover of this report represents a vi- sual exercise depicting Pakistan’s youth as a 100 young people. Our wheel of many colours represents the multiple dimensions of what it means to be young in Pakistan today. Based on national data as well as results of our own sur- veys, the Wheel presents a collage of informa- tion on Pakistan’s young people (details in Chap- ter 2). This tapestry shows the diversity as well as vibrance of our youth, while also highlighting the inequities and hurdles they face as young Pakistanis. We chose the Wheel as this Report’s motif and cover art, because it represents not only the basis of our hopes for the future, but also our concerns. Published for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Human Development Reports: In 1990, Dr. Mahbub ul Haq produced the first Human Develop- ment Report, introducing a new concept of human development focusing on expanding people’s opportunities and choices, and measuring a country’s development progress though the richness of human life rather than simply the wealth of its economy. The report featured a Human Devel- opment Index (HDI) created to assess the people’s capabilities. The HDI measures achievements in key dimensions of human development: individuals enabled to live long and healthy lives, to be knowledgeable, and have a decent standard of living. -

Challenges for Independent News Media in Pakistan A Report to the Center for International Media Assistance By Sherry Ricchiardi July 30, 2012 The Center for International Media Assistance (CIMA), at the National Endowment for Democracy, works to strengthen the support, raise the visibility, and improve the effectiveness of independent media development throughout the world. The Center provides information, builds networks, conducts research, and highlights the indispensable role independent media play in the creation and development of sustainable democracies. An important aspect of CIMA’s work is to research ways to attract additional U.S. private sector interest in and support for international media development. The Center was one of the of the main nongovernmental organizers of World Press Freedom Day 2011 in Washington, DC. CIMA convenes working groups, discussions, and panels on a variety of topics in the field of media development and assistance. The center also issues reports and recommendations based on working group discussions and other investigations. These reports aim to provide policymakers, as well as donors and practitioners, with ideas for bolstering the effectiveness of media assistance. Marguerite H.
