The Moldovan Identity Crisis: A Young State, an Old Nation, and the Search for a National Identity An Honors Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Honors in The Center for International Studies. By Joshua David Rogers (Under the mentorship of Darin H. Van Tassell) ABSTRACT The question of national identity in modern states is one that is both elusive and ever-changing; however, the fate of a young state could very well depend on grasping this concept. This study focuses on defining national identity, and solving the dilemma of an absent, or otherwise unarticulated national identity in the Republic of Moldova. Moldova, a former member of the Soviet Union and independent since 1991, has already been through a civil war due to their lack of cohesion.

  • Lisbon - Portugal 6–9 December 2017
21st Annual Meeting of the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI), a registered branch of the ESC, in cooperation with the Portuguese Working Group of Echocardiography. Final Programme as of 20 November 2017 Lisbon - Portugal 6–9 December 2017 www.escardio.org/EACVI Welcome Letter Welcome to EuroEcho-Imaging 2017 in Lisbon, Portugal! EuroEcho-Imaging is the flagship of the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) and the world’s largest cardiovascular imaging congress. This year’s main themes are imaging in heart failure and interventional imaging. EuroEcho-Imaging will create an exciting forum, in which both clinicians and scientists can present and discuss the most up-to-date research and clinical findings on the broader spectrum of echocardiography alongside with the other cardiovascular imaging modalities. Cardiologists, physicians from other specialties and imagers who use these cardiac and vascular imaging techniques will interact to discuss how to ideally use all the capabilities offered by these techniques and how to further develop them in the near future. An educational track will run throughout the congress, featuring several specifically designed courses and sessions. Young cardiologists and researchers will be stimulated and supported through the three Young Investigator Award competitions (clinical, basic science, clinical case). Also, dedicated initiatives will reward the best original research. However, EuroEcho-Imaging is more than just education and science. It is also a fantastic opportunity to meet the greatest experts in cardiovascular imaging in the world, to exchange ideas and projects with colleagues who share the same clinical or scientific interest coming from all over the world. Thank you for being with us in Lisbon, we look forward to seeing you in the coming days.

  • Moldova Guidebook
MOLDOVA PREFACE Moldova is a picturesque country of rolling green hills, whitewashed villages, placid lakes, and sunflower fields. It has an old-world charm that is hard to manufacture, and some of the best vineyards in Europe. It is densely populated, with numerous ethnic groups represented, but the majority are ethnic Romanians. The economy is heavily dependent on labor intensive agriculture, and Moldova must import virtually 100% of its primary energy. Chisinau is a moderate sized city that has preserved much of its pre-Soviet character, with many low rise, older structures and tree shaded streets remaining in the central city. With its cultural ties to Russia, Romania, and Turkey, Moldova is something of an enigma. It has risen from the ruins of Soviet socialism to become a democratic republic split in two, one area controlled by the government and the other by separatist rebels nominally loyal to Mother Russia, but it is essentially concerned with making money. The possibility of unification with Romania, its closest neighbor, has been raised, but Moldova has much in common with other former Soviet countries. The official language, Moldovan, is phonetically identical to Romanian. Often business is conducted in Russian; most Romanian-speakers also speak Russian, but many members of the Russian and Ukrainian minorities do not speak Romanian/Moldovan. A government attempt early in 2002 to reintroduce compulsory study of Russian provoked months of protests but no violence. Originally Moldova was part of the greater region of Moldavia — one of the principalities that made up Romania. It lies directly between Russia and Romania and has long been the focal point for border disputes and expansionist policies.

Abstract Folk sports are the countertype of modern sports: invented traditions, bolstered by tangible ritual and intangible myth, played by the common folk in order to express a romantic ethnic identity. Like other cultural forms, traditional sports and games around the world are becoming marginalized in the face of modernization and globalization. In 2003, UNESCO ratified the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in an attempt to counter such trends of cultural homogenization. As elements of intangible cultural heritage, folk sports now fall under the auspices of UNESCO safeguarding policies.

  • BACK in PLAY No.191 • July/August 2020
No. 191 BACK IN PLAY No.191 • July/August 2020 • July/August No.191 EDITORIAL Theodore Theodoridis UEFA General Secretary A MOMENT TO SAVOUR, A TIME TO REFLECT fter the unprecedented hiatus brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, football is steadily coming back to life. This edition of UEFA Direct reports on the imminent return of our elite competitions, Aassessing the obstacles that the European football community has had to overcome together to successfully rewrite UEFA’s competitions calendar – both for the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons. UEFA’s return to play, with matches set to kick off in August, represents a milestone moment and the first chance to take stock of our journey to date through an extraordinary period. The COVID-19 pandemic’s outbreak in the spring brought European football to a standstill, and there was understandable concern that UEFA would not be able to finish its 2019/20 club competition season. Other major competitions, such as UEFA EURO 2020 and Women’s EURO 2021, were postponed for a year. The outlook was uncertain, and the ramifications were difficult to predict. As our president underlines in his interview on pages 6–7, despite these challenges, UEFA maintained a steadfast belief that better times would come. Now, following a great deal of hard work, cooperation and compromise behind the scenes, we are ready to deliver a match schedule in August and beyond that will bring the latest club competitions to completion, and set the 2020/21 competition campaign in motion. The moment when ‘live’ UEFA action returns to the spotlight will doubtless be one to savour, offering hope and joy to football lovers young and old.
