Significant New Plantings to Ramp up Kanzi Apple Supply The organization that owns the Kanzi apple brand says new plantings across the world mean supply volumes will double within the next five years. A representative of GKE, the variety management company owned by Belgian, Dutch and German grower cooperatives, told www.freshfruitportal.com some 70,000 metric tons (MT) would likely be marketed this coming season. "We already have new trees in the ground," CEO Henry Muller said at the London Produce Show last week. GKE CEO Henry Muller "We know that in five years definitely it [marketing volumes] will be double." Coinciding with the new plantings, last September the company carried out a major rebrand to market the apple in a different way. "We wanted to express that freshness, that explosion of taste, and that’s how we want to convince the consumer to try our apple," Muller said. "It tastes good, it's crunchy and it's really juicy. That's why people love it, and that's what we wanted to express in our changed marketing approach. "We see that it is successful and we see more and more growers asking us to be a part of our family." This coming season the company will also focus on digital advertizing, including putting videos on Facebook and YouTube. Muller said the rebrand was taking place worldwide except for the U.S., as the brand was only introduced there a couple of years ago and the company did not want to risk confusing consumers by changing its image so quickly. A couple of years ago GKE began selling the apples in the Middle East, where sales are now growing, and there are also shipments going into Asia. The Kanzi apple, which is a cross of Gala and Braeburn, is now grown in Europe, the U.S. FreshFruitPortal.com states of Washington and Michigan, Chile, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Participation in such activities requires not only especially powerful forms of intention reading and cultural learning, but also a unique motivation to share psychological states with oth- ers and unique forms of cognitive representation for doing so. The result of participating in these activities is species-unique forms of cultural cognition and evolution, enabling everything from the creation and use of linguistic symbols to the construction of social norms and individual beliefs to the establishment of social institutions. In support of this proposal we argue and present evidence that great apes (and some children with autism) understand the basics of intentional action, but they still do not participate in activities involving joint intentions and attention (shared intentionality). Human children’s skills of shared intentionality develop gradually during the first 14 months of life as two ontogenetic pathways intertwine: (1) the general ape line of understanding others as animate, goal-directed, and intentional agents; and (2) a species-unique motivation to share emotions, experience, and activities with other persons.

Applewood's SweeTango harvest began Aug. 26. The fruit “needs to sit for four or five days before packing,” thus the delay until Labor Day. “In Michigan, the color and finish on the fruit is by far the nicest crop we ever had," said Swindeman. "The size is a little disappointing, but the crop is very, very good.” 1 / 2 Overall in Michigan, the apple crop is three or four days later than a year ago. “We’ve had outstanding weather,” Swindeman added. “We’ve had cool temperatures at night and sunny days. We are experiencing the kind of weather we always like to have at this time of the year. For the previous two or three years, it was not like this early on” in the harvest season. Applewood’s harvest of McIntosh and Premier Honeycrisp, an early-maturing Honeycrisp straink, was just beginning in the first week of September. Swindeman said the Premier Honeycrisp harvest comes two or three weeks ahead of the regular Honeycrisp variety. “It’s nice to get started a couple weeks early,” he noted. “The color, quality and condition are fabulous.” Gala harvest in Swindeman’s orchard in southeast Michigan was under way in early September. According to the firm, Applewood Fresh is the lead marketer in the Midwest for the SweeTango, which comes from a Minnesota breeding program.

    Slutrapport ’Kartlägga och bekämpa fruktträdskräftan i Sverige’ Projektnummer: V1036010 Larisa Gustavsson Sammanfattning Svampsjukdomen fruktträdskräfta (Neonectria ditissima) utgör ett stort problem för svenska äppelodlare. Under vissa år kan hastigt uppblossande sjukdomsutbrott utplåna hela odlingar av unga äppelträd. Vi har utfört inokuleringar på avklippta kvistar och ettåriga träd. Utfallet av detta projekt blev ny kunskap om genetiska skillnader i mottaglighet mot kräfta för 78 sorter (inklusive nummersorter), 4 grundstammar och 3 vilda arter. Vi har identifierat nya resistenskällor, vidareutvecklat en metod för att påvisa kräfta i ved av äppleträd samt etablerat oss som en viktig partner i internationella nätverk. Projektet har genomförts i nära samarbete med odlare, odlarrådgivare, växtförädlare i Sverige och Norge, samt kollegor i Holland, Belgien och Nya Zealand. Dessutom har detta projekt nära kopplingar till det EU-finansierade projektet ’FruitBreedomics’ och det PPP-finansierade projektet ’NordApp’. Flera nya projekt har utvecklats baserat på den kunskap vi tagit fram under dessa fyra år. Bakgrund Svenska konsumenter efterfrågar lokalt producerade äpplen av hög kvalité. Men bara omkring 20% av de konsumerade äpplena odlas inom landet. Idag är äppelodling en viktig och alltmer ökande del inom trädgårdsnäringen, men svensk äppelproduktion möter stora utmaningar orsakade av sjukdomar och skadegörare. En av de mest allvarliga sjukdomarna är fruktträdskräfta, som orsakas av svampen Neonectria ditissima (tidigare känd som Nectria galligena). Sjukdomen gynnas av vårt relativt svala och regniga klimat. Denna sjukdom är också ett stort och akut problem i många andra europeiska länder, framför allt i norra Europa. Skador orsakade av N. ditissima kan vara enorma. Eftersom kraftigt sjuka träd smittar andra närstående friska träd, måste de tas ut från odlingen och ersättas med nya.
