He makes pure, expressive Champagne in very small batches. The family estate is made up of vineyards that are scattered in and around Avize and in 2008, Étienne took over. He has converted to fully Biodynamic farming and makes very small quantities - only 3,500 bottles worldwide and owns a total of 2.8 hectares. Taking over the reins of this father, Jean-Baptiste is a talented and passionate wine producer. His fanatical efforts in the vineyard followed by careful craftsmanship in the cellar have made him one of the most revered winemakers in the region. RRP BEST NET Geoffroy Rosé de Saignée 1er cru Brut NV $ 115 $99 BENOÎT MARGUET Based in the grand cru village of Ambonnay, Benoît is fifth generation and one of the most exciting natural producers at the moment being certified organic and biodynamic. He is one of very few vineyards to plough only using 2 horses since 2010. He sources fruit from Ambonnay, Bouzy and Mailly and uses a very natural approach to fermentation using only wild yeasts. He is also sulphur free and uses small 225 litre oak barriques. RRP BEST NET Benoît Marguet 15 Shaman NV $95 $89 LA PARCELLE Perhaps the smallest the vineyard in the region, but such a wonderful producer! This minuscule single plot of Pinot Meunier is situated on a challenging 45 degree slope with a fortunate south facing aspect. The owners Julien and Stephanie produce a tiny 4 barrels of delightful biodynamic, 100% Pinot Meunier wine as well as a few bottles of Ratafia. RRP BEST NET Brut Nature 2014 $ 135 $ 125 www.boatshedmarket.com.au PIERRE DEVILLE Alban Corbeaux is the fourth generation of his family to work a 5 hectare parcel in grand cru Verzy, 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. From working sustainably to organics and now converting to biodynamics, the health of the soil and his plants is his primary concern. From there, little by little he is coaxing the best expression from his fruit. Two single- vintage, single-variety, small-batch releases are just the start, with three more cuvées still resting in the cellars. RRP BEST NET Pierre Deville Copin Grand Cru Blanc de Noir (2017 Base) NV $165 $145 EGLY-OURIET Egly-Ouriet is located in the Grand Cru Village of Ambonnay, famed for its Pinot Noir fruit. Producer Francis Egly practices biodynamic and organic principals in his vineyards which span through Bouzy and Verzenay. Francis makes up a handful of highly talented and terroir-driven producers along with the likes of Anselme Selosse, Larmandier-Bernier and Vouette et Sorbée. These are wines first. He produces deep, powerful and intense styles of champagne. His minimum ageing is around 48-60 months (as declared on his informative back label) for his non-vintage wines, allowing time to express the inner strength and purity. RRP BEST NET Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Brut NV $179 $169 LARMANDIER-BERNIER At 15 hectares the estate is predominantly in Vertus, at the Southern tip of the Côte des Blancs, however there are also holdings in Cramant, Chouilly, Oger and Avize. The estate is meticulously run by Pierre Larmandier and his wife Sophie. Pierre’s family have owned vineyards in the Côte des Blancs since the Revolution. The vineyards are biodynamically worked and the average age of the vines is 35 years. They have impeccable balance, concentration, texture and a purity and finesse that carries across the whole range. They rarely, if ever, skip a beat and any artifice of wine-making is seamlessly integrated revealing a mineral intensity and sense of place few producers in Champagne can match. RRP BEST NET Larmandier-Bernier Longitude Blanc de Blancs NV $ 125 $99 LAHERTE FRÈRES “In Thierry Laherte and son Aurélien, the term “Champagne de terroir” makes perfects sense in a range that will delight lovers of authentic and tasty wines. The disgorgement date is mentioned on each bottle. An address in great shape.” La Revue du vins de France RRP BEST NET Laherte Frères Ultradition NV $89 $79 www.boatshedmarket.com.au AGRAPART Agrapart works an astonishing 70 micro-plots in the Côte des Blancs, mostly in Avize yet with plots in Cramant, Oiry and Oger as well. Production is tiny, with no more than 6000 cases produced in any given year, and vine age is among the oldest in the Côte des Blancs - between 35 and 60+ years old with around 70% of the vines at 40+ years. Yields are kept very low. Agrapart’s wines are of uniformly excellent quality, with a naturally vibrant and vinous character that makes them feel grown rather than made. RRP BEST NET Agrapart Terroirs Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs NV $ 139 $ 115 LOUIS ROEDERER The freshness, finesse, and brightness of Brut Premier make it the perfect wine for festive occasions. Its structured texture, richness, and length are distinctly winey. It is a full, complex wine that is both rich and powerful, whilst remaining a great classic. We are impressed by Louis Roederer’s increasing commitment to exploring biodynamics both with treatment of their vast vineyard holdings plus the recent acquisition of a 15 hectare biodynamic parcel from Leclerc Briant. He was focused on select- ing, blending and ageing wines to produce high quality champagnes, buying grapes from individual growers. In 1867 he purchased several old chalk quarries, called crayères which dated from the Gallo-Roman era, in order to create optimal conditions for wine maturation. • The History Today
TheDelamotte History is a Champagne house more than 250 years old (it is the sixth oldest Champagne house) founded in Reims in 1760 by François Delamotte, a vineyard owner. He and other Champagne producers were the creators of a tradition based on quality. Their modus operandi, far from being viewed as quaint, earned them a place in the Encyclopedia of Physiocrates. Their practices have been used as a model and a paradigm by other businesses due to their progressive outlook and insistence on quality. They were truly modern-minded people. Their masterpiece – the wines – continue to be recreated anew each year and the house of Delamotte is a prime example of the traditions of quality they embody. Alexandre Delamotte brought the cellars, caves and offices of the House of Delamotte to one beautiful mansion at the end of the 18th century. In 1828, his brother, Nicolas Louis Delamotte, also known as the Chevalier Delamotte Barrachin, a former Chevalier de Malte and President of the Chamber of Commerce of Reims, assumed management of the House of Delamotte. In this tenure with the Chamber of Commerce, Nicolas was well known for hosting spectacular events, namely the coronation of France’s last King, Charles X. Serge Chapuis The House was sold to the Lanson family in the 1830’s, who later started producing a Lanson label. It was eventually acquired by Marie-Louise de Nonancourt, née Lanson, in the period between the two World Wars. In 1927, Marie-Louise made the decision to transfer the activities of the house of Delamottte to Mesnil-sur-Oger.

  • Why Buy Grower Champagne? Excerpts from a Seminar by Kevin Pike & Terry Theise “Champagne Is on the Verge of Profound Change
Why Buy Grower Champagne? Excerpts from a seminar by Kevin Pike & Terry Theise “Champagne is on the verge of profound change. There is a growing realization in the region that its viticulture has become slovenly and the subtleties of its terroir have been neglected. The era of great growers and great vineyards is just beginning.” —The New France, Andrew Jefford, 2002 The Champagne region in France is dominated by a handful of brand names. These négoçiants and coopératives produce 80% of the total output in Champagne, yet they only own 12% of the vineyards. They may, by law, purchase as much of their grapes or pressed juice or already made sparking wine (known as sur-lattes) as they wish from all over the region. They bring to market a mass produced commodity - the most successful processed agricultural product in human history - a Champagne made in a “house style.” This is a sparkling wine made in a highly interventionist and formulaic way with swift pressing, extensive use of chaptalization, acidifi cation, cultured yeast strains, enzymes, nitrogenous yeast nutrients and rapid temperature controlled fermentations. They produce many millions of cases annually. By contrast, Small Growers, or “récoltant-manipulants,” may purchase only 5% of their fruit and handcraft their limited quantities of Champagne from individual villages and parcels where the inherent qualities of the vineyards imprint themselves into the wines. These winemakers are brave souls in an industrialized age: growing, crafting and bottling their own Champagne, offering it to the world as their life’s work. They deserve your support. Problem: There’s only one “Champagne” While Champagne consists of one AOC it is one of the largest in France, totaling 34,000 hectares (84,000 acres).
