After a restful first night, your second day in Paris will be spent exploring the city on foot with a local guide. We’ll cover all the must-see landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, The Louvre, and more. The next morning, your pre-tour concludes with a private transfer to the train station in order to reach the start of your bike tour. Accommodations: Hôtel Bel Ami Price Per Person: $1,500 DAY 1 Bring on the Bubbles Your guides will greet you at the Reims train station and deliver you to the Château des Dames de France for lunch. After a bike fitting and safety talk, we'll warm up on a ride through forests and charming villages that finishes with a loop back to the vineyards. This afternoon we'll check into our hotel, then visit the UNESCO-listed town of Reims. Tour the 13th-century Cathedral of Reims, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and the coronation site for centuries of French kings. Finally, it's time to toast to our Champagne extravaganza, and we'll raise a glass of bubbly at Maison Pommery, one of Reims’ most famous and historic Champagne houses. An informative visit and cellar tour of this important producer is followed by our first dinner at Brasserie Le Jardin—paired with Champagne, of course. Santé! • The History Today
TheDelamotte History is a Champagne house more than 250 years old (it is the sixth oldest Champagne house) founded in Reims in 1760 by François Delamotte, a vineyard owner. He and other Champagne producers were the creators of a tradition based on quality. Their modus operandi, far from being viewed as quaint, earned them a place in the Encyclopedia of Physiocrates. Their practices have been used as a model and a paradigm by other businesses due to their progressive outlook and insistence on quality. They were truly modern-minded people. Their masterpiece – the wines – continue to be recreated anew each year and the house of Delamotte is a prime example of the traditions of quality they embody. Alexandre Delamotte brought the cellars, caves and offices of the House of Delamotte to one beautiful mansion at the end of the 18th century. In 1828, his brother, Nicolas Louis Delamotte, also known as the Chevalier Delamotte Barrachin, a former Chevalier de Malte and President of the Chamber of Commerce of Reims, assumed management of the House of Delamotte. In this tenure with the Chamber of Commerce, Nicolas was well known for hosting spectacular events, namely the coronation of France’s last King, Charles X. Serge Chapuis The House was sold to the Lanson family in the 1830’s, who later started producing a Lanson label. It was eventually acquired by Marie-Louise de Nonancourt, née Lanson, in the period between the two World Wars. In 1927, Marie-Louise made the decision to transfer the activities of the house of Delamottte to Mesnil-sur-Oger.

  • CHAMPAGNE Welcome Visitors
© Lonely Planet Publications 354 Champagne CHAMPAGNE CHAMPAGNE Known in Roman times as Campania, meaning ‘plain’, Champagne is a largely agricultural region and is celebrated around the world for the sparkling wines that have been produced here for more than three centuries. According to French law, only bubbly originating from this region – grown in designated areas (now being expanded to meet growing demand), then aged and bottled according to the strictest of rules – can be labelled as Champagne. The production of this prestigious sparkling wine takes place mainly in two départements: Marne, whose metropolis is the ‘Coronation City’ of Reims, and the less prestigious (though increasingly respected) Aube, whose préfecture (departmental capital) is the ancient and picturesque city of Troyes, home to several exceptional museums and entire streets lined with half-timbered houses. The town of Épernay, 30km to the south of Reims, is the de facto capital of Champagne (the drink, that is) and is the best place to head for dégustation (tasting session). The Champagne Route wends its way through the region’s diverse vineyards, taking visitors from one picturesque – and prosperous – wine-growing village to the next. A number of name-brand maisons (literally ‘houses’, meaning Champagne producers) have achieved international renown, but much of the region’s liquid gold is made by almost 5000 small- scale vignerons (wine makers) in 320-odd villages, many of whose family-run facilities welcome visitors.
