CUNEIFORM TEXTS FROM BABYLONIAN TABLETS IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM PART XLV OLD-BABYLONIAN BUSINESS DOCUMENTS BY TH. G. PINCHES PUBLISHED BY THE TRUSTEES OF THE BRITISH MUSEUM LONDON 1964 © 1964 The Trustees of the British Museum Printed by Her Majesty's Stationery Office PREFACE All but one of the 122 texts published here are Old-Babylonian business, administrative, and legal documents. The single exception (No. 122) is apparently an Old-Babylonian incantation. As forecast in the Preface to Cuneiform Texts XLIV, the present volume makes available to students the remainder of the unpublished Pinches copies from the two 'Budge Collections,' Bu.88-5-12 and Bu.91-5-9, to accommodate which the traditional number of fifty plates has exceptionally been increased to fifty-four. Over one half of the texts are dated or can be assigned to a ruler and these have been arranged chronologically by reigns in the following order: first, the tablets bearing date-formulae; then, those mentioning the king in the oath-formula; finally, those men- tioning the king in the legend of a seal. No. 71, a tag of Samsu-Iluna, year 2, has, however, been grouped with other, undated tags on'plate XXXIII. The arrangement of the undated tablets (pls. XXXIV-LIV) has been determined by the needs of plate-setting. The reigns represented in our documents are: Bun-tah 'un-Ila of Sippar (No. 1; this is the envelope, with a slightly variant text, of the tablet published by Waterman, Business Documents, No. 33); Sumu-la-El (No. 2); Sabium (Nos. 3-5); Apil-Sin (Nos.6- 12); Sin-muballit (Nos. 13-19); Uammurapi (Nos. 20-30); Samsu-Iluna (Nos. 31-39 and 71); Abi-esub (Nos. 40-42); Ammi-ditana (Nos. 43-55); Ammi-saduqa (Nos. 56-62); unidentified (Nos. 63-66). Although there is no direct external evidence, most, if not all of the tablets seem to come from Sippar. It was Pinches's method to make first a draft copy on blue paper and then the final copy on white paper. Curiously, the draft copies almost invariably reproduce any seal- impressions on the tablet but these are omitted in the final copies. For a certain number of texts in this volume only draft copies were available (Nos. 3, 9, 11-14, 22, 30, 32, 37, 46, 51, 60, 63, 91, 105, 113, 114, 118) and this explains the slight difference in the quality of the copies. For No. 1 we have given a composite copy - the text from the final copy, the seal-impressions from the draft. The copies have been edited by Dr. E. Sollberger, who has collated them with the originals and made any necessary corrections. In the course of this work he has enjoyed the help of Professor J. J. Finkelstein of the University of California, who also collated the texts independently, and of Professor A. 'Sachs of Brown University, with both of whom he was able to discuss the subject-matter of these documents. It is a pleasant duty to thank them here publicly for their co-operation. R. D.
