Individuals, companies, and industries all work to establish and accomplish authenticity for themselves and related stakeholders. As a marketing point for creating differentiation and singularity, authenticity has the potential to augment the value of a product above and beyond its promising functional, esthetic, or experiential significance. However, authenticity is a concept with heavily debated characteristics, and it is not well understood in its market manifestations. Academic work on authenticity remains vague in terms of both its definition and its marketing relevance. -

A bright future for glass-ceramics From their glorious past, starting with their accidental discovery, to successful commercial products, the impressive range of properties and exciting potential applications of glass-ceramics indeed ensure a bright future! by Edgar Dutra Zanotto lass-ceramics were discovered – somewhat accidently G – in 1953. Since then, many exciting papers have been published and patents granted related to glass-ceram- ics by research institutes, universities and companies worldwide. Glass-ceramics (also known as vitro- cerams, pyrocerams, vitrocerâmicos, vitroceramiques and sittals) are produced by controlled crystal- lization of certain glasses – generally induced by nucleating additives. This is in contrast with sponta- neous sur- face crys- tallization, which is normally not wanted in glass manufacturing. They always con- tain a residual glassy phase and one or more embedded crystalline phases. The crystallinity varies between 0.5 and 99.5 percent, most frequently between 30 and 70 percent. However, in some cases, bubbles or pores develop during the latter stages of crystallization. Glass-ceramics have, in principle, several advantages. • They can be mass produced by any glass-forming technique. • It is possible to design their nano- structure or microstructure for a given application. The first phase of GLASS IS TOMORROW – GIT I ran from 1 June 2011 through 31 May 2013. Supported by the Culture Programme of the European Union, GLASS IS TOMORROW promotes a high level of craft and design in contemporary glass. Glass esthetics and techniques have been explored by mixed teams of designers and glassmakers to develop new typologies of everyday objects. In its first phase, the project opened up new possibilities and generated dialogue about the conception, production and distribution of glass pieces. A publication and a touring exhibition (France, Italy and Belgium) were organized to ensure a high visibility and promotion of the project and the outcomes of the three workshops, which took place between September 2011 and July 2012 in glass centers Iittala Glass Village in Nuutajärvi, Verreum in Nový Bor and CIAV in Meisenthal. In its second phase, which began 1 June 2013, GLASS IS TOMORROW – GIT II focuses on further collaboration with high-end glass centers and postgraduate education departments specialized in glass design, in order to increase the quality of glass production in Europe and the awareness of European glass culture, traditions and innovations. -

Two Annunciations: Examples of interpellation or offers of reception? a comparative analysis of pictures by Roger van der Weyden and René Magritte. This thesis uses reception theory, as formulated by the late Wolfgang Iser, as well as ideas about interpellation or hailing, to compare and analyze two paintings: The Annunciation (c. 1435) by Roger van der Weyden and Personal Values (1952) by René Magritte. It demonstrates that interpellation and reception are part of the same process, and that reception theory is especially suited to this comparison and analysis—because it allows consideration of ways in which the comparable pictorial structures of both paintings facilitate their intentions. It argues that those intentions are to engage viewers in a dialogue that ultimately is beneficial to both pictures and viewers. Furthermore, based on this shared intent, and on visible structural similarities, it argues that each of the two paintings identifies and receives the other as a picture of the same image—that is, of the Annunciation. -

FERNANDO BOTERO Biography, Bibliogrphy, Exhibition Biography Fernando Botero Angulo was born on April 19, 1932, in Medellín, a regional centre in the province of Antioquia, high up in the Colombian Andes. Fernando attends primary school and is awarded a scholarship that enables him to continue his education at the secondary school in Medellín. His uncle, a passionate devotee of bullfighting, sends him at age twelve to a school of tauromachy, where he remains for the next two years. The bullring is the main subject of Fernando’s early drawings; his first recorded painting is a watercolour of a toreador. In 1948 Botero shows his works in public for the first time in an exhibition in Medellín of work by artists from the province of Antioquia. At age eighteen, he begins to draw illustration for the Sunday supplement of “El Colombiano”, Medellín’s principal newpaper. In January 1951, Botero moves to Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, where he quickly gains access to the avant-garde circle that meet at the Cafè Automatica. Only five months after his arrival in Bogotá, Botero holds his first one-man exhibition at the Leo Matiz Gallery. In 1952, his painting “On the Coast” earns him second prize in he Ninth Salon of Colombian Artists, held at the Biblioteca Nacional in Bogotá. The prize money of 7,000 pesos enables Botero to travel to Europe. Botero moves to Madrid, where he enrolls at the Academia San Fernando. In the Prado he encounters the works of the Spanish masters Velásquez and Goya, which he uses as models for his paintings. -
