Tufts Sailing Magazine Tufts Sailing Magazine Fall 2015 Welcome to the third annual Tufts Sailing Magazine for alumni, parents, friends and students. We hope this new magazine finds you well and that you are happy to hear our news. We hope to make this magazine informative and attractive enough to keep for years. Inside you will find senior profiles (you might want to hire one of them), alumni interview, schedule, and roster. We are also updating the fund drive for 24 new Larks, to be built right here in Peabody, Massachusetts, USA! In addition to new boats we are seeking donations to increase the educational experience for our team. Combined with a generous budget from the Tufts Athletic Department, your donations will allow the team to keep up with the rising costs of travel, equipment, coaching, and risk management while supporting the biggest and busiest college dinghy team in the world. We began with a potential 30 freshmen and by the end of the season we still had eall pshed feshe sailos. The’e good too. We aot get the est i the old anymore the a a fe othe uiesities a do ith likel adit lettes from their respective athletic departments but we do get the most freshmen despite higher academic standards every year. Having graduated two great classes in a row, we relied on mostly juniors and a few talented seniors in major regattas. We struggled in comparison to past years but had a few great individual performances. Meanwhile we cleaned up at the club level with freshmen and sophomores. Ou oe’s tea sailed like eteas afte liig thei a up though the aks last ea. Just as the Mrs. Hurst Bowl was a turning point for our women last year, it was our high point this year as well finishing second behind #1 Coast Guard. Ironically the following week we just nipped Coast Guard in the last race to capture the eighth and final qualifying spot for Atlantic Coast champs. To be fair, Coast Guard was without their best skipper. The Urn oe’s ad “hell oed ee run concurrently on the Charles this year. The women also had success at Navy (5th), Yale (6th), Singlehanded Champs (7th) and Regis Bowl (4th). In club level regattas we racked up the wins in the Sacred Heart Invite, Stu Walker Cup at Middlebury, Commonwealth Invite at Mass Maritime (1st and 2nd), Ross Trophy at Courageous in R-19s (1st and 2nd), Harvard Invite, Mystic Lake Invite, J-22 Invite at Coast Guard, Protest Trophy at Bates, Peak Foliage Invite at Tufts, Southern Series at Roger Williams, and of course the Dark of Night Invite at Tufts. Back to the top, great individual performance were turned in by James Moody/Liz Fletcher/Pierre duPont/Sammy Shea in keel boats, Griffin Rolander/Emily Shanley-Roberts (filling in for injured Natalie Dazige iig B diisio at eth Schell and Scott Barbano with various crew dominating the second day of the Hap Moore team race at Coast Guad. MaClaie Kiea/Aada “oi o B at the Woe’s Atlantic Coast Champs. At Hood Jumbos ran away with both divisions of the Hood Trophy. Ou keel oat sailos had a ouple setaks. The “to Tsail Clu’s ollege ig oat egatta at Larchmont was cancelled due to a storm and a collision in the NE Match Race champs spelled doom for our match racers. That followed a pre-season of J-’s, “oas, ad “oligs, the the Haa i Colgates, the J-22 Invite, our annual Soling team race with Boston Sailing Center, the Long Island Sound IRC champs in a Farr 30, more match racing practice, and a match race clinic in Sonars at Seawanhaka. In all we competed in 65 regattas, some with multiple Tufts entries, in 13 classes (Larks, 420s, FJs, Techs, Fireflies, Lasers, Radials, Snipes, Sonars, Ynglings, Colgates, Farr 30, and Solings) and in eight states. Freshmen represented the Jumbos in 47 of those regattas. Now, currently enrolled at Tufts, I am sailing collegiate dinghies. The skills needed in each discipline could not be any more different from one another, but I know that exposing myself to a new type of sailing will only make me a better overall sailor. The skiff places an emphasis in apparent-wind sailing, the ability to play modes, meticulous tuning, and long- course strategy and tactics. In the collegiate circuit, however, those who excel have strengths such as starting, aggressive boathandling, and short-course boat-on-boat tactics. Although there remains much to be learned, I could not be happier to be taking on such new challenges as a member of the Tufts Sailing Team. Seeing the level of competition and the camaraderie of those teams at that regatta was all it took to convince me that college sailing was meant for me. Now as a junior, I can say without a doubt that the talent and friendship I saw there ae a itegal pat of life o. It was a fairly tough transition, trying to fit the ways I knew to be successful into a college dingy. Le regate nazionali della “Coppa Italia”, saltata Livorno per forfait meteo, hanno registrato la tredicesima vittoria di Paolino Viacava al Bombolino (82 iscritti) e la vittoria di Filippo Jannello a Palermo (44 iscritti). Le regate dei Classici, invece, hanno regolarmente effettuate le tre tappe nelle quali Jannello ha vinto a Varazze (47 iscritti), e l’olimpionico Giorgio Poggi ha dominato a Napoli (38 iscritti) e a Castiglione (39 iscritti). Delle gesta di Paolino a Portofino già detto abbastanza e il rischio è solo quello di ripetersi. Il vecchio Filo Jannello, che proprio qualche giorno fa abbiamo scoperto giornalista di primo piano della vela italiana di qualche anno fa (1982, esattamente 30 anni fa!!) come il buon vino invecchiando migliora. È uno dei pochi timonieri della Classe che oggi si permette di vincere passando da uno scafo moderno a quello classico (…per giunta d’epoca!).

    Rigging Lark 2252 Introduction This booklet was inspired by reading the Wayfarer guide to rigging and racing. The wayfarer guide includes a lot more information than just rigging and is worth a read even if you sail a different class. This guide describes how Lark 2252 is rigged and will hopefully help those new to Lark sailing that has an older boat. It is not the definitive way to rig and some things might change as I gain more experience sailing this exciting and rewarding class. If you have one of the Rondar Larks or are thinking about setting up the control lines and rigging from scratch then consult the rigging guide written by Simon Cox and available from the class website. Lark 2252 was built by Parkers in 1989. Although it is a MK2 much of the rigging is similar to the MK1s. I believe in keeping things as simple as possible and only having adjustable controls you actually adjust on the water. However, if you need to adjust controls they need to be easy to use and fall to hand. While the latest shiny gadgets and brand new sails may look nice, if your basic boat handling and tactics are poor you’ll still sail slowly whatever you spend. After all, what good are those £800 new sails if you’re always in someone’s dirty wind! Finally, join the class association, everyone is very friendly and helpful and you’ll be doing your bit to keep the class alive. Garry Packer 10th July 2004.     Meet the Competitors: Annapolis YC Double-handed Distance Race R.J. Cooper & Courtney Cooper Cumberland are a brother and sister team from Oxford, Maryland and Panama City, Florida. They have sailed together throughout their youth as well as while on the Sailing Team for the University of Florida. The pair has teamed up for a bid to represent the United States and win gold at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. They will be sailing Tenacious owned by AYC member Carl Gitchell. Sail #501 Erik Haaland and Andrew Waters will be sailing the new Italia Yachts 9.98 sport boat named Vichingio (Viking). Erik Haaland is the Sales Director for Italia Yachts USA at David Walters Yachts. He has sailed his entire life and currently races on performance sport boats including the Farr 30, Melges 32 and J70. Andrew Waters is a Sail and Service Consultant at Quantum Sails in Annapolis. His professional sailing career began in South Africa and later the Caribbean and includes numerous wins in large regattas. Sail #17261 Ethan Johnson and Cat Chimney have sailing experience in dinghies, foiling skiffs, offshore racers and mini-Maxis. Ethan, a Southern Maryland native now living in NY is excited to be racing in home waters. Cat was born on Long Island, NY but spent time in Auckland, New Zealand. She has sailed with Olympians, America’s Cup sailors and Volvo Ocean Race sailors. Cat is Technical Specialist and Rigger at the prestigious Oakcliff Sailing where Ethan also works as the Training Program Director. Earlier this year Cat and Ethan teamed up to win the Oakcliff Double-handed Melges 24 Distance Race.

Some of which are owned and raced regularly, however many are sitting in dinghy parks or garages providing a safe habitat for an abun- dance of wildlife. The materials used and build quality of the Lark means that virtually all of these hulls could be restored with minimum expense and therefore offer an excellent opportunity for sailors on a budget. This means you can buy a Lark second hand from as little as £50, they regularly come up on sites like E-bay, Apollo Duck and in Yachts and Yachting and Dinghy Sailing Magazine as well as on the lark web-site www.larkclass.org . So when shopping for a Lark what should you expect to get for your money: Booking Form Boat Numbers 1-1838 – Baker Lark Boat Numbers 1839-2454 Parker Lark Baker was the original Lark builder from 1967 right Parker took over building the Lark and built a huge num- up until the late 1970’s and built the vast majority of ber of Larks throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s, including Larks in terms of numbers.     LA LARGA- THE OFFSHORE RACE OF PALMAVELA 22ND TO 26TH OF OCTOBER, 2021 17TH REGATTA PALMAVELA 27TH TO 31ST OF OCTOBER, 2021 NOTICE OF RACE 1 ORGANIZATION The events’ Organising Authority (OA) will be the Real Club Náutico de Palma (RCNP), supported by the Real Federacion Española de Vela (RFEV) with the institutional support of the Balearic Islands Government, Palma Town Hall, with further support of the Federación Balear de Vela, Club Nautic S’Arenal, ARAM (Mediterranean Offshore Sailor’s Association) and the Balearic Islands Port Authority. The event is included in the IMA 2021 Racing Calendar and the PalmaVela regatta is a qualifying event for the IMA Mediterranean Inshore Challenge, a qualifying regatta for ORC classes in the Circuito Mediterráneo de Vela and is the Copa de España for the Dragon Class. 2 VENUE AND DATES La Larga-The Offshore Race of Palmavela will be held in waters of the Balearic archipelago from the 22nd to the 26th of October, 2021 and the 17th edition of the PALMAVELA Regatta will be held in the waters of the Bay of Palma from the 27th to the 31st October, 2021. 3 RULES 3.1 The event will be governed by the following rules: a) Racing Rules of Sailing as defined in the WORLD SAILING 2021-2024 RRS. b) The RFEV prescriptions available on: https://www.rfev.es/uploaded_files/Document_3219_20210101121551_es.pdf c) SY Appendix of the RRS. d) The RRS 90.3 (e)(3) applies.
