  • A Day in Luxembourg, LUXEMBOURG
A Day in Luxembourg, LUXEMBOURG Why you should visit Luxembourg Luxembourg is the epitome of “the charming European city” we all grew up imagining. It’s amazingly cosmopolitan but not overwhelming, except for its extremely complex history. Its gorges traverse the city, making it a spectacular three-dimensional city, with lit-up fortifications along the walls of the gorges -- perfect for the historian and the romantic. And the food is a lovely mix of French, German, Italian and of course Luxembourgish. Three things you might be surprised to learn about Luxembourg and the people 1. Luxembourg is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its old quarters and fortifications. 2. General George Patton is buried here 3. Villeroy & Boch ceramics started in Luxembourg Favorite Walks/areas of town Go to the visitors center in Place Guillaume to sign up for any of the many fantastic—and reasonably priced—group or individual walking, biking or driving (even in your own car) historic tours with an official guide. The tours can include visits to: • Historic city center • The Petrusse gorge next to the city center • The historic Grund, down below the city center • Clausen, near the Grund • Petrusse and Bock Casemates Other very good things to do/see • American Military Cemetery, Hamm: A beautiful cemetery with more than 5,000 soldiers, most of whom fell in the Battle of the Bulge of WWII in 1944-45. The cemetery also has an impressive chapel and is the burial place of General George Patton. www.abmc.gov/cemeteries/cemeteries/lx.php • German Military Cemetery, Sandweiler: A short drive from the Hamm cemetery, this cemetery has a much more somber feel to it, containing more than 10,000 German soldiers who perished in the Battle of the Bulge in 1944-45.

  • Luxembourg 20
LUXEMBOURG 20. - 22. MAY The trip continued from Amsterdam to Luxembourg by train. This was the first time we used the Inter-rail tickets, which we had bought before we left Norway. They were valid for 5 days during a 10 days period. We had to fill in names, the date when leaving, where we went from and to, number of the train and when it left the station. There was therefore some paperwork, which had to be done each time we went on to a new train. Luxembourg in Europa. Luxembourg flag Luxembourg coat of arms The written history of Luxembourg starts with the building of the castle Luxembourg in the Middle Ages. Around this castle developed little by little a town community. This little town became later the center of a small, but strategically important country at the point of intersection between Germany, France and Belgium. The Vienna congress in 1815 made formally Luxembourg an independent Grand Duchy, in personal union with the Netherlands under the House of Oranien-Nassau. Luxembourg gained full independence in 1890 when the Dutch king Wilhelm III died. The city Luxembourg, also called Luxembourg City, is a municipality with city rights and the capital in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. In the country itself it is mostly called Staad, «city». The city lies where the two rivers Alzette and Pétrusse meet in South-Luxembourg. Here we find the historic Luxembourg castle, which was founded by the Franks in the early Middle Ages. Luxembourg city is on of the most prosperous cities in the world and has developed to be a banking and administration center.

  • WORLD HERITAGE LIST Luxembourg No699
WORLD HERITAGE LIST Luxembourg No699 Identification Nomination The city of Luxembourg: its old quarters and fortifications Location Grand Duchy of Luxembourg State Party Luxembourg Date 1 October 1993 Justification by State Party Its outline and character have been strongly influenced, even penneated, by the military past that has been imposed upon the City of Luxembourg. For this reason part of the city's architectural heritage illustrates a period that is significant for the city and the country, that of foreign rule. Spaniards, French, Austrians, and Prussians have each made a contribution to the creation of the appearance of the City of Luxembourg. Thus the physiognomy of the city can be considered to be an historical stratigraphy within which the military aspect has strongly influenced the general urban layout. The City of Luxembourg bears witness to a homogeneity resulting from the diversity of its builders who have, over three centuries, endeavoured to confer impregnability on a fortress town which was of major importance from a strategie point of view. To this must be added the fact that the City of Luxembourg eloquently exemplifies the role and the weight resulting from being situated between two territorial powers which have many times over the centuries attempted to gain the upper band over one another. The fortifications and the old quarters of the City of Luxembourg constitute an historie ensemble of major importance. They are an outstanding example of a European fortified town which illustrates a long period of western history. For this reason the proposed site fully confonns with criterion iv of the World Heritage List.
