The Dormans family. By J.A.M.A.Dormans Content. Chapter 1. Introduction Chapter 2. The French family de Dormans. Chapter 3. Toponymes with the name Dormans Chapter 4. The first four generations Dormans. Chapter 5. Descendants of Petrus Dormans from Schimmert. Chapter 6. Descendants of Mathias Dormans from Nuth. Chapter 7. Descendants of Petrus Dormans from Schinnen. Chapter 8. Descendants of Mathias Dormans from Schinnen. Chapter 9. Descendants of Nicolaas Dormans from Brunssum. !1 Chapter 1. Introduction. The oldest ancestor of the family Dormans was Mathias, who married in 1597 in Heerlen. It appears that even in the twentieth century near all relatives are born in South-Limburg. The very extensive lineages of this Limburgian family needed a clear overview . The period before 1700 has been described in chapter 4. It contains the first four generations from 1597. About 1700 five lineages come forward, respectively Petrus Dormans from Schimmert (chapter 5), Mathias Dormans from Nuth (chapter 6), Petrus Dormans from Schinnen (chapter 7), Mathias Dormans from Schinnen (chapter 8) and Nicolaas Dormans from Brunssum (chapter 9). In chapters 5-9 the five lineages have been described separately from the fifth generation . Reason for this investigation. For the 50-year anniversary of the marriage of my parents I would like to give them a pedigree of our family. It was not only interesting how the first names of my ancestors were, but also the birth places and their profession. My grandfather was Jan Peter Aloysius Dormans, he was a farmer in Doenrade. His father and grandfather were also farmers. It is a pity that in the ecclesiastical archives before 1800 no professions are mentioned. The start of detailed genealogy research is dependent sometimes on coincidence. At a visit to the State archives in Maastricht visitor cards have to be filled in. When I checked in with my family name, at that moment two visitor cards with our family name were present. On my question if I was allowed to copy the home address of the other person (probably we were doing the same research), Paul Dormans appeared to live in Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA. After intensive correspondence we interchanged our genealogical data. It appeared that he was been flew away from the Germans. Finally he reached the USA, where in Mississippi he married the American Virginia Statham. Their four children are, as far as I can check, the first American Dormans. Our first common ancestors were Nicolaas Dormans and Catharina Hoen, married in Schinnen in 1710. It happens more often that relatives depart to countries far away. Children of Leonardus Josephus Johannes Dormans are born in Blantyre, Malawi. Other relatives with our family name are living in Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Unites States of America, Canada, Brazil, Australia and New Zealand. The motive for further research was the reading of the chapter “Wintraak 1885-1985” from “Daniëls Familia Hillenbergensis” (Sittard, 1986) from the author J.G.M.Daniëls. Of course I met the name of my great-grandfather Peter Willem Dormans, living at Wintraak no.153 (at this moment no. 34), and of his brother Jan Peter Dormans, living at the Wintraak no. 154 (now no. 35). At the Wintraak no. 143 (now no. 14) Jan Gerard Dormans was living, a unknown person for me. In 1884 his daughter Maria Josepha with her husband moved in in his home, after living first next to him at no.144 (now no.16). At the Wintraak no. 158 (now no. 15) in 1885 the couple Dormans-Cals had an inn, also unknown for me. Enough reason for me to dive in the family history. Twins. From this research 16 twins were detected during four centuries. Twins, who had a father or mother Dormans. !2 1. 10-09-1646 Mathias Dormans and Jacobus Dormans, sons of Petrus Dormans and Maria Vroemen, who were not linked to the pedigree presented here, as to few data are available. There parents married in Heerlen 03-03-1642. 2. 03-27-1679 Dionysius Dormans and Servatius Dormans. 3. 05-12-1763 Joanna Elisabeth Dormans and Maria Joseph Dormans, 4. 3-30-1780 and 03-31-1780 Henricus Stijfs and Maria Catherine Stijfs 5. 10-16-1843 Peter Willem Dormans and Maria Agnes Hubertina Dormans 6. 02-02-1846 Jan Hubertus Dormans and Peter Theodorus Dormans. Twins no 5 an 6 occurred in the same family. 7. 10-03 1907 Jan Frans Jozef Dormans and Jan Pieter Willem Dormans 8. 11-04-1916 Wilhelmina Johanna Maria Dormans and Maria Catharina Antonia Dormans 9. 05-12-1921 Maria Hubertina Dormans and Martinus Hubertus Dormans 10. 09-07-1938 Petrus Hubertus Dormans and Martinus Hubertus Dormans. 11. 01-09-1945 Paul Joseph Johannes Dorscheidt and Peter Dorscheidt 12. 07-08-1946 Johannes Arnoldus Maria Aloysius Dormans and Peter Paul Willem Maria Dormans. 13. 10-01-1987 Maud Mathilde Renee Verberne and Merel Veronica Maria Verberne. 14. 10-05-1990 David Hamacher and Tobias Hamacher. 15. 02-01-1993 John-Paul Franks and Rebecca LouEllyn Franks. 16. 08-22-2000 Martijn Johannes Helena Lowie Dormans and Daniël Anna Betin Dormans. From scientific literature it is known that having two-egged-twins is partly determined genetically. In the Netherlands the number of twins per 1000 pregnancies through the centuries is averaged 12. Considering the relative high number of twins in our family genetical factors appeared to have an influence. First names. Naming of children to grandparents or parents can be followed in all generations. The great-grandfather, grandfather as well as the father of Mathias Dormans (chapter 8, Vd), born in Schinnen at 05-18-1734 are called Mathias, while three times a son was called Mathias, as the earlier born son Mathias died in the mean time. Only in the present generations the tradition naming children to grandparents is diminishing. A new scala of names is added to our family: Bas, Beatrice, Bianca, Lynda, Evelyn, Hein, Lilian, Randy, Roge, Sandy, Sjoerd, Sonja and Sylvia. The top-10 of most popular first names in our family through the centuries is for boys and girls: 1. J(e)an 77 Maria/Marie 176 2. Jo(h)annes 75 Anna 52 3. Petrus/Peter 51 Jo(h)anna 21 4. Joseph 26 Hubertina 10 5. Hubertus 20 Elisa(beth) 10 6. Pieter 18 Catharina 8 7. Martinus 14 Barbara 7 8. Willem 14 Margaretha 5 9. Mathias 12 Josephina 3 10 Hendrik 12 Mathilde 3 Family names. Although through the centuries the South-Limburgian family name Dormans was written nearly always correctly, - except for only a few times in Brunssum about 1730 where the !3 name was written as Doirmans , and in Schimmert (1807) as Dorremans - in the North- Limburgian Bergen the notation Dormans is present next to many other notations: Doremans, Doormans, Dooremans and Doremanns. Which notation is correct, is unclear. The great-grandfather of bishop J.Hanssen from Roermond was called Pierre Dormans (Doormans), and came from Bergen. I could not find a link between this family and the South-Limburgian family Dormans. The Limburgian places Maastricht and Berg en Terblijt are adjacent to Utrecht the only one in the Netherlands where members of the Dormanns family are living. They all descend from Edmund Dormanns, who was born in Aachen 10-17-1902. In 1908 he moved to Maastricht, where he married and finally died at 12-23-1983. His parents (father Herman Dormanns, born Aachen 02-03-1874 and mother Therèse Ernst, he was single son) and grandparents came also from Germany. It is not excluded that in earlier times a slip occurred from Dormans to Dormanns. In the past centuries the family name Dormans was present in the marriage registers of Geilenkirchen (Germany) at 06-13-1686, as well as in the marriage registers of Heerlen, where Johannes Dormans from Immendorf (Germany) married at 04-15-1663. It is curious that in 1906 in Kerkrade in the birth act of Maria Catharina the father was mentioned as Joseph Johannes Arnold Dormans, while he signed the act with Dormanns. As the mobility back in the old days was more limited than nowadays, we see that in earlier times persons nearly always married somebody from the same village or neighboring place. Through the centuries certain family names are linked several times to the family Dormans. The family name Bruls is linked a few times with the Dormans family. In 1740 Petrus Dormans married in Schinnen Christine Bruls. In 1813 Mathias Dormans married in Schinnen Maria Christina Bruls. In 1845 Elise Dormans married in Schinnen Jan Pieter Bruls, and in 1870 Jan Michael Dormans married in Oirsbeek Johanna Maria Petronella Bruls. Marriages between the Dormans and Hoen families occurred several times in 1710, 1938 and 1948. Maria Catherine Elisabeth Hoen, who in 1938 married Peter Willem Aloysius Dormans, appeared to descend directly from a brother of Catharine Hoen, who in 1710 married Nicolaas Dormans. Also between the families Dormans and Custers more connections appear to exist: in 1836 in Nuth between Marie Mechtildis Dormans and Pieter Renier Custers; in 1845 in Hoensbroek between Hendrik Nicolaas Dormans and Anna Maria Custers; in 1873 in Hoensbroek between Maria Gertrudis Dormans and Jan Andreas Custers; and in 1878 in Schinnen between Maria Mechtildis Dormans and Gerard Joseph Custers. The bride and groom Jean Peter Dormans and Maria Gertrudis Dormans, who married in Schinnen in 1831, were consanguineous in the third grade (grand nephew and grand niece). Jean Peter (chapter 6, VI-3) was a son of Adam Nicolaas (VI), and a grandson of Mathias (Vb). Maria Gertrudis (chapter 7, VIb-7) was a daughter of Theodorus (VIb) and a granddaughter of Petrus (Vc).
