(Maung Htin Aung 1959:87) So go the three lines of wisdom offered to the lazy student Maung Pauk Khaing in the well- known eponymous folk tale. A group of impoverished village youngsters, led by their teacher Daw Khin Thida, adapted the tale in 2007 in their first attempt to perform a play. From a well-to-do family that does not understand her philanthropic impulses, Khin Thida, an English teacher by profession, works at her free school in Insein, a suburb of Yangon (Rangoon) infamous for its prison. The shy students practiced first in Burmese for their village audience, and then in English for some foreign donors who were coming to visit the school. Khin Thida has also bought land in Bagan (Pagan) and is building a culture center there, hoping to attract the street children who currently pander to tourists at the site’s immense network of temples. Jorge Basadre’s “Peruvian History of Peru,” or the Poetic Aporia of Historicism Mark Thurner We need a Peruvian history of Peru. By Peruvian history of Peru I mean a history that studies the past of this land from the point of view of the formation of Peru itself. We must insist upon an authentic history ‘of ’ Peru, that is, of Peru as an idea and entity that is born, grows, and develops. The most important personage in Peruvian history is Peru. Jorge Basadre, Meditaciones sobre el destino histórico del Perú Although many gifted historians graced the stage of twentieth-century Peru- vian letters, Jorge Basadre Grohmann (1903 – 1980) was clearly the dominant figure. Today Basadre is universally celebrated as the country’s most sagacious and representative historian, and he is commonly referred to as “our historian of the Republic.” Libraries, avenues, and colleges are named after him. The year 2003 was “The Year of Basadre” in Peru, with nearly every major cultural institution in Lima organizing an event in his honor.1 The National University HAHR editors and the anonymous readers of earlier versions of this article deserve my thanks. Abstract Purple corn has acquired great interest by its high content of anthocyanins and bioactive properties. Among this type of corn the Andean purple corn has been the most studied, however, in Mexico, we have the “maíces mora- dos”, which is recognized by its dark purple color. Since there is no record about its content of anthocyanins, in this study we quantified the total anthocyanins (TA) accumulated in the pericarp, aleurone layer, kernel, and corn- cob of 52 corn populations with different grades of pigmentation. Results showed that TA was superior in purple corn than in blue and red corn. TA ranged from 0.0044 to 0.0523 g of TA ∙ 100 g-1 of biomass in the aleurone layer; in the pericarp from 0.2529 to 2.6452 g of TA ∙ 100 g-1 of pericarp; in the kernel from 0.0398 to 0.2398 g of TA ∙ 100 g-1 of kernel and in the corncob from 0.1004 to 1.1022 g of TA ∙ 100 g-1 of corncob. -

Indigeneity in the Oruro Carnival: official memory, Bolivian identity and the politics of recognition Ximena Córdova Oviedo ruro, Bolivia’s fifth city, established in the highlands at an altitude of almost 4,000 metres, nestles quietly most of the year among the mineral-rich mountains that were the reason for its foundation Oin 1606 as a Spanish colonial mining settlement. Between the months of November and March, its quiet buzz is transformed into a momentous crescendo of activity leading up to the region’s most renowned festival, the Oruro Carnival parade. Carnival is celebrated around February or March according to the Christian calendar and celebrations in Oruro include a four- day national public holiday, a street party with food and drink stalls, a variety of private and public rituals, and a dance parade made up of around 16,000 performers. An audience of 400,000 watches the parade (ACFO, 2000, p. 6), from paid seats along its route across the city, and it is broadcast nationally to millions more via television and the internet. During the festivities, orureños welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors from other cities in Bolivia and around the world, who arrive to witness and take part in the festival. Those who are not performing are watching, drinking, eating, taking part in water fights or dancing, often all at the same time. The event is highly regarded because of its inclusion since 2001 on the UNESCO list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, and local authorities promote it for its ability to bring the nation together.
