These signs and symbols are often called ‘hieroglyphs,’ or more simply ‘glyphs.’ To most of us, these glyphs look like pictures, but it is often hard to say what they are pictures of…. Unlike European languages, like English and Spanish, the ancient Maya writing did not use letters to spell words. Instead, they used a combination of glyphs that stood either for syllables, or for whole words. We will call the glyphs that stood for syllables ‘syllable glyphs,’ and we’ll call the glyphs that stood for whole words ‘logos.’ (The technically correct terms are ‘syllabogram’ and ‘logogram.’) It may seem complicated to use a combination of sounds and signs to make words, but we do the very same thing all the time. Inca Civilization 1425 A.D - 1532 A.D The Inca first appeared in the Andes region during the 12th century A.D. and gradually built a massive kingdom through the military strength of their emperors. Known as Tawantinsuyu, the Incan empire spanned the distance of northern Ecuador to central Chile and consisted of 12 million inhabitants from more than 100 different ethnic (cultural) groups at its peak. Well-devised agricultural and roadway systems, along with a centralized religion and language, helped maintain a cohesive (solid) state. Despite their power, the Inca were quickly overwhelmed by the diseases and superior weaponry of Spanish invaders, the last bastion of their immense empire overtaken in 1572. The Inca first appeared in what is today southeastern Peru during the 12th century A.D (1100’s). According to some versions of their origin myths, they were created by the sun god, Inti, who sent his son Manco Capac to Earth through the middle of three caves in the village of Paccari Tampu. After killing his brothers, Manco Capac led his sisters and their followers through the wilderness before settling in the fertile valley near Cusco circa 1200. The expanding reach of the Inca state, lead to the need for information and people to travel quickly throughout the empire. Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui is believed to have been the first Inca emperor to order forced resettlement to squash the possibility of an uprising from one ethnic (cultural) group. In addition, he established the practice in which rulers were prevented from inheriting the possessions of their fathers, thereby making sure that new leaders would conquer new lands and accumulate new wealth of their own. -

Title: Comparison of Spanish Colonization—Latin America and the Philippines Teacher: Anne Sharkey, Huntley High School Summary: This lesson took part as a comparison of the different aspects of the Spanish maritime empires with a comparison of Spanish colonization of Mexico & Cuba to that of the Philippines. The lessons in this unit begin with a basic understanding of each land based empire of the time period 1450-1750 (Russia, Ottomans, China) and then with a movement to the maritime transoceanic empires (Spain, Portugal, France, Britain). This lesson will come after the students already have been introduced to the Spanish colonial empire and the Spanish trade systems through the Atlantic and Pacific. Through this lesson the students will gain an understanding of Spanish systems of colonial rule and control of the peoples and the territories. The evaluation of causes of actions of the Spanish, reactions to native populations, and consequences of Spanish involvement will be discussed with the direct correlation between the social systems and structures created, the influence of the Christian missionaries, the rebellions and conflicts with native populations between the two locations in the Latin American Spanish colonies and the Philippines. Were the Incas Natural Lords of Peru? Contrasting views of Titu Cusi Yupanqui and Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa By Katherine Hoyt, Ph.D. Alliance for Global Justice (retired) Prepared for delivery at the 2021 Virtual Meeting of the Western Political Science Association April 3. 2021 Writing in 1570 from the last Inca stronghold of Vilcabamba, the Inca Titu Cusi Yupanqui begins his Relación de la conquista del Perú by saying that he is the grandson of the Inca Huayna Capac and son of Manco Inca Yupanqui, “the natural lords that used to rule these kingdoms and provinces of Peru.”1 The term “natural lords” was used by Spanish philosophers and theologians, including Francisco de Vitoria at the University of Salamanca in Spain, to indicate rulers of hierarchical societies whose subjects accepted their rule. Meanwhile, writing in Cuzco, the Spanish navigator and conquistador Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa was given the task by Viceroy Francisco de Toledo of proving exactly the opposite: that the Incas were not natural lords of their lands and were, in fact, tyrants. Vitoria had maintained that it was not legitimate to attack societies ruled by their natural lords except in the case of tyranny, protection of innocent people, or self-defense. Titu Cusi makes a special effort to show the devotion of the people to his father Manco Inca and thus prove that he ruled with their support and favor. On the other hand, Sarmiento de Gamboa worked to compile acts of cruelty and tyranny on the part of each Inca ruler in order to prove that the conquest had been justified. -

Jorge Basadre’s “Peruvian History of Peru,” or the Poetic Aporia of Historicism Mark Thurner We need a Peruvian history of Peru. By Peruvian history of Peru I mean a history that studies the past of this land from the point of view of the formation of Peru itself. We must insist upon an authentic history ‘of ’ Peru, that is, of Peru as an idea and entity that is born, grows, and develops. The most important personage in Peruvian history is Peru. Jorge Basadre, Meditaciones sobre el destino histórico del Perú Although many gifted historians graced the stage of twentieth-century Peru- vian letters, Jorge Basadre Grohmann (1903 – 1980) was clearly the dominant figure. Today Basadre is universally celebrated as the country’s most sagacious and representative historian, and he is commonly referred to as “our historian of the Republic.” Libraries, avenues, and colleges are named after him. The year 2003 was “The Year of Basadre” in Peru, with nearly every major cultural institution in Lima organizing an event in his honor.1 The National University HAHR editors and the anonymous readers of earlier versions of this article deserve my thanks. Ranging from the earliest cities in the Americas to Inca metropolises, millennia of urban human history along the Andes have left large and striking sites scattered across the country. But cities and monuments do not exist in solitude. Peru’s ancient sites are connected by a vast circulatory system of roads that connected every corner of the country, and thousands of square miles beyond its current borders. The Inca road system, or Qhapaq Ñan, is particularly famous; thousands of miles of trails linked the empire from modern- day Colombia to central Chile, crossing some of the world’s tallest mountain ranges and driest deserts. The Inca state recognized the importance of its road system, and dotted the trails with rest stops, granaries, and religious shrines. Inca roads even served directly religious purposes in pilgrimages and a system of ritual pathways that divided the empire (Ogburn 2010). This project contributes to scholarly knowledge about the Inca and Pre-Hispanic Andean civilizations by studying the roads which stitched together the Inca state. -
Matses Indian Rainforest Habitat Classification and Mammalian Diversity in Amazonian Peru

HARDER Oepartmeut ofEvolution, Ecology, and Organismnl Biology Tile Ohio State University Columbus, Ohio 43210-1293 ABSTRACT.- The Matses Indians of northeastern Peru recognize 47 named rainforest habitat types within the G61vez River drainage basin. By combining named vegetative and geomorphological habitat designations, the Matses can distinguish 178 rainforest habitat types. The biological basis of their habitat classification system was evaluated by documenting vegetative ch<lracteristics and mammalian species composition by plot sampling, trapping, and hunting in habitats near the Matses village of Nuevo San Juan. Highly significant (p<:O.OOI) differences in measured vegetation structure parameters were found among 16 sampled Matses-recognized habitat types. Homogeneity of the distribution of palm species (n=20) over the 16 sampled habitat types was rejected. Captures of small mammals in 10 Matses-rc<:ognized habitats revealed a non-random distribution in species of marsupials (n=6) and small rodents (n=13). Mammal sighlings and signs recorded while hunting with the Matses suggest that some species of mammals have a sufficiently strong preference for certain habitat types so as to make hunting more efficient by concentrating search effort for these species in specific habitat types. Differences in vegetation structure, palm species composition, and occurrence of small mammals demonstrate the ecological relevance of Matses-rccognized habitat types. La cosmología en el dibujo del altar del Quri Kancha según don Joan de Santa Cruz Pachacuti Yamqui Salca Maygua Rita Fink Se suele adscribir al dibujo del altar de Quri Kancha una estructura bipartita (dos campos separados por un eje vertical), la cual refleja la oposición andina de hanan-hurin o alternativamente la simetría de los altares eclesiásticos. El presente trabajo identifica los elementos del dibujo y analiza las parejas que ellos componen, examinando el simbolismo de cada una de ellas y las interrelaciones de sus componentes en varias fuentes de los siglos XVI-XX. El mundo dibujado está organizado según el principio andino de hanan-hurin aplicado en dos dimensiones, la horizontal y la vertical. Dos ejes, hanan y hurin, dividen el espacio en cuatro campos distintos. Los campos inferiores están organizados de manera inversa con respecto al espacio superior. Semejantes estructuras cuatripartitas se encuentran en otras representaciones espacio-temporales andinas. The structure of the drawing of the Quri Kancha altar has been described as dual, reflecting either the Andean hanan-hurin complementarity or the symmetry of Christian church altars. Present study identifies the elements presented in the drawing and analyses the couples which they comprise, demonstrating the symbolism of each couple and the hanan-hurin relations within them, as evident in XVI-XX century sources. The world presented in the drawing of the Quri Kancha altar is organized according to the Andean hanan-hurin principle applied on two-dimensional scale (horizontal and vertical). Two axes - hanan and hurin - divide the space into 4 distinct fields. The lower fields are inverted relative to the hanan space above. -
