Quentin Hiernaux1 Received: 8 June 2018 / Accepted: 24 June 2019 / Published online: 2 July 2019 © Springer Nature B.V. 2019 Abstract Some biologists now argue in favour of a pluralistic approach to plant activities, under- standable both from the classical perspective of physiological mechanisms and that of the biology of behaviour involving choices and decisions in relation to the environ- ment. However, some do not hesitate to go further, such as plant “neurobiologists” or philosophers who today defend an intelligence, a mind or even a plant consciousness in a renewed perspective of these terms. To what extent can we then adhere to pluralism in the study of plant behaviour? How does this pluralism in the study and explanation of plant behaviour fit into, or even build itself up, in a broader history of science? Is it a revolutionary way of rethinking plant behaviour in the twenty-first century or is it an epistemological extension of an older attitude? By proposing a synthesis of the question of plant behaviour by selected elements of the history of botany, the objective is to show that the current plant biology is not unified on the question of behaviour, but that its different tendencies are in fact part of a long botanical tradition with contrasting postures. Two axes that are in fact historically linked will serve as a common thread. 1. PART II PERSONAL PAPERS AND ORGANIZATIONAL RECORDS Allen, Paul Hamilton, 1911-1963 Collection 1 RG 4/1/5/15 Photographs, 1937-1959 (1.0 linear feet) Paul Allen was a botanist and plantsman of the American tropics. He was student assistant to C. W. Dodge, the Garden's mycologist, and collector for the Missouri Botanical Garden expedition to Panama in 1934. As manager of the Garden's tropical research station in Balboa, Panama, from 1936 to 1939, he actively col- lected plants for the Flora of Panama. He was the representative of the Garden in Central America, 1940-43, and was recruited after the War to write treatments for the Flora of Panama. The photos consist of 1125 negatives and contact prints of plant taxa, including habitat photos, herbarium specimens, and close-ups arranged in alphabetical order by genus and species. A handwritten inventory by the donor in the collection file lists each item including 19 rolls of film of plant communities in El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. The collection contains 203 color slides of plants in Panama, other parts of Central America, and North Borneo. Also included are black and white snapshots of Panama, 1937-1944, and specimen photos presented to the Garden's herbarium. Allen's field books and other papers that may give further identification are housed at the Hunt Institute of Botanical Documentation. Copies of certain field notebooks and specimen books are in the herbarium curator correspondence of Robert Woodson, (Collection 1, RG 4/1/1/3). Gift, 1983-1990. CUMULATIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY ON THE HISTORY OF OCEANOGRAPHY, 1987- The Cumulative Bibliography on the History of Oceanography (CBHO) was published annually in the History of Oceanography Newsletter beginning in 1987 and through 1997, in order to gather in one place the scattered literature on the history of oceanography. CBHO strives to list all works on the history of oceanography. Biographical items like biographies and obituaries are compiled separately. CBHO was compiled from 1987 to 1997 by Jacqueline Carpine-Lancre, Librarian of the Musee Oceanographique in Monaco and Secretary of the Commission of Oceanography of the International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science, Division of History of Science. More recent citations are being compiled by Deborah Day, Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archivist, and are listed at the end of this bibliography (not interspersed throughout the initial alphabetical arrangement.) CBHO includes all works on the history of oceanography, except biographical items like biographies and obituaries. There is no comprehensive bibliography on the history of oceanography before 1987. CBHO was compiled from many sources including: • Oceanographic Literature Review (part B of Deep-Sea Research), Section F.330: History of Science (especially Oceanography); • Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts, Section: History and Development; • Bulletin Signaletique, 522: Histoire des Sciences et des Techniques, V.B.: Geophysique, Oceanographie; • Isis (critical bibliography), Section HS.23c: Oceanography. • documents received in the libraries of the Musee Oceanographique de Monaco & of the International Hydrographic Bureau, as well as SIO Archives • items sent to Jacqueline Carpine-Lancre and Deborah Day by authors, librarians & book reviewers throughout the world. The format has been changed to the style cited in The Chicago Manual of Style (14th ed., 1993). -

These represent 172 genera, 805 species and 34 infraspecific entities at subspecies (2), variety (30) or form (2) level. Additionally, 65 sheets marked as types representing 60 putatively unpublished names are listed in an appendix. Collection data as well as type status and synonyms are provided. References are made to electro- nic resources providing access to full collection metadata as well as high resolution images. It is cosmopolitan, but the diversity is highest in the tropics. The family comprises almost 800 genera and more than 20.000 species (Mabberley 2008). Many orchids have been – and still are – much esteemed for their showiness and the Orchidaceae is certainly one of the most important horticultural plant families. Hamburg was the “continental centre of orchi- domania” during the middle of the 19th century second only to the United Kingdom, the global centre of the exaggerated passion for orchids at that time (Poppendieck 2006). -

Smith to the friends and scientific associates of his mature years were evident from his early youth. Among these were a lovable disposition, passion for study, quick idealism, intense devotion to the task in hand, and unalterable integrity. He was born in the little village of Gilberts Mills, New York, on January 21, 1854. His parents, R. K. Smith and Louisa (Frink) Smith, migrated in his early childhood to a farm home in Hubbardston in southern Michigan. Unfortunately we are able to add but little concern- ing his earlier ancestral history. His family were of Anglo- Saxon stock, some of the lines going back among the earliest of the New England settlers. They were pioneers and frontiers- men, who helped to settle half a dozen towns in eastern Massa- chusetts and then moved on into Connecticut, afterwards into central New York, and still later into southern and central Michigan and farther west. His immediate forebears on both sides lived in central New York in small farming communities, and his family had settled in Gilberts Mills shortly before he was born. Their social life centered around the church and school, and there was a strong element of piety in his home life. There was much hard work to be done, but his was a happy boyhood, with all the interests and activities connected with farming, to which he early added an interest in books, nature, science, medicine, art, and music. -
